Shalom My Dear Parents, Friends and
Supporters,
I trust this message finds you well. The cold
weather continues to present all kinds of
challenges and obstacles to so many. It is
important that we all make ourselves available to
help one another. Please be especially vigilant of
the elderly and those that have young children.
Last week we celebrated the First Grade Siddur
party. I congratulate all our Talmidim and
Talmidot. I especially want to congratulate and
thank Morah Miriam and Morah Orly for a
beautiful presentation. This week we celebrate
the Chumash Play of our second graders. I
congratulate our Talmidim and Talmidoth and
especially their teachers Morah Sylvie and Morah
Simona.
This Shabbat is called Shabbath Shekalim which
commemorates the Mitzvah of the Half-Shekel
that was prevalent during the Temple era. The
Torah tells us that each individual adult man had
to give a Half-Shekel coin to the Cohen so that
the census of the people can be taken. The Torah
is very specific “the rich is not to give more and
the poor cannot give less than the Half-Shekel”.
The money was used to count the people and for
the maintenance of the Bet HaMikdash.
The greater symbolism of the Half-Shekel maybe
the fact that the community of Israel is defined as
an entity, based on an exact number of
individuals that made up that entity. In other
words the people of Israel is not complete if even
one individual is not counted. The group’s entire
identity and viability depends on the groups
responsibility to each individual.
Our Chachamim tell us that Mosheh Rabbenu
was initially perplexed by the Torah
commandment calling for each Jewish male to
give a Half-Shekel offering to be used in the
making of the Mishkan. Finally, Hashem showed
Mosheh a coin of fire and said: "This is what must
be given."
What was it about the Half-Shekel that was so
difficult for Mosheh to comprehend? What
possible difficulty could a mere coin have
presented Mosheh Rabbenu? We must assume
that what the Sages intend to relate is that Moses
was perplexed by the conceptual significance of
the Half-Shekel.
The responsibility of the leader to care for the
flock while at the same time be concerned for
each and every individual is daunting. Moshe was
shown a burning coin suggesting the significance
of its message.

story of Purim. They enjoyed singing the Purim songs
and shaking the raashanim. We also began working on
our "Very Own Megillah".
Shabbat Shalom :)
Nursery I
Purim is coming! The children were introduced
to the holiday of Purim through story, songs and
books. The children began coloring their
Megilot and singing some Purim songs.
Each week we work on “academic sheets”,
practice cutting with scissors and review the
English and Hebrew Alphabet.
Our Shabbat Ima and Abba were
Agam and Michael
Shabbat Shalom
Nursery II
We started this week with icy, icy weather. We moved on
to a very busy week. We learned about both
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We are
excited to bring home our Presidents book that we made.
We also had a visit from the dentist, it was so much fun.
We then read a Clifford magazine about taking care of our
teeth.
Shabbat Abba and Ima were Imanuel and Yael.
Shalom
Pre K
This week we learned the letter O for oval, orange, owl, oven,
onion, and octopus.
We learned the Hebrew letter “ ” (mem) for
Queen
(water) and
(candleabra). In
Parsha we learned that we don’t cook or eat milk and meat
together.
Our Shabbat Abba was David G and our Ima was Gavriella
Kindergarten English
We have been learning much important information regarding our first president, George Washington and our sixteenth,
Abraham Lincoln. The class was most fascinated to learn that while George Washington did not wear a wig he put white
powder in his hair to make it look fancy.
In science this week we discussed teeth and had a pediatric dentist come to our school and talk to us.
We performed an "eggs-periment" to show the effects of tooth decay. We took an egg and placed it in a jar filled with
vinegar overnight. The vinegar is the acid that forms when bacteria or plaque feeds on foods with high sugar. We saw,
the next day, that the vinegar ate through the shell. The children know that's why they must brush their teeth twice a day
and floss! In the middle of one of our "talks" and experiment Joshua's tooth fell out! Mazel Tov! By the way in George
Washington's time there were no dentists. The children saw a picture of his fake teeth which were made of elephant
tusks and gold. They were not a pretty sight, even though very valuable! Our main story was “Rooster’s Off to See the
World”. We reviewed the letter/sound "h" and nouns in sentences. We are almost finished learning all the uppercase
letters! Shabbat Shalom and enjoy President's Weekend.
Kindergarten Hebrew
For this week’s Parasha “Mishpatim”, we specifically
focused on the idea that “no milk and meat should be
eaten together.” Therefore, our dishes, cutlery and pots,
etc need to be kept strictly separate. As a result we
made kashrut labels for the kitchen and we hope that
they will be useful. In addition we learned a new song
too which is written in the Parasha book. We have been
reviewing the Alf-bet letters and learned the vowel of
“chirik” which has the sound of “e” as in “big”
Shabbat Ima & Abba were Ariella and Daniel this week.
1st Grade Hebrew – ‘
