Sears Principal June is a busy and exciting month and it is always a time of mixed emotions. A time to celebrate the achievements of all of our students, to welcome many Mr. J. Laughlin new families who are joining us for Junior Kindergarten next year, and to wish Vice Principal our graduating Grade 8 class well as they head off to High School. It is important to cherish the many remarkable accomplishments we have Ms. A. Jadeja experienced during the past year through the efforts of our staff, school Ms. F. Gamble council, and members of our school community. We have much to celebrate at School Office Assistants Northern Lights. All volunteers are invited to a special tea on June 20th at 8:15am so that we can thank you in person for supporting our students at Ms. G. Brocklebank-Vincent Northern Lights. Heather Sears Jeff Laughlin EARLY DISMISSAL ON JUNE 26TH All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to student to improving student achievement and well-being. On Thursday, June 26th, 2014 an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day. These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success. As has been our practice over the past four years, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 26th, 2014 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:45am. Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bussed to and from school will receive transportation at this time. Parents whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule. OFFICE REMINDERS SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION Did you know that students’ bussing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son/daughter’s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Report cards will not be sent home any earlier. If you are unable to pick-up your child’s Report Card at the end of the year, we can mail it to you providing you leave us with a large self addressed envelope and two stamps to cover postage or more if and any additional documents that need to be sent. This school year Northern Lights raised an amazing $8,359.05. This is $2997.00 more than last year EPIPENS AND OFFICE MEDICATION Parents are advised to please pick up all epi-pens and student medication in the office on the last day of school (Thursday, June 26th by 11:45am). These medications will need to be stored at home over the summer and possibly renewed for September 2014 when your child returns on the first day. New medication administration forms will be available the last week of August for pick-up. SAFE ARRIVAL We always ask that parents contact the school’s 24 hour answering machine to let us know about any student lates or absences. It becomes extremely busy if the office staff have to track down students or families who are not home or have gone on early vacation and students are not accounted for. GRADUATION 2014: The Northern Lights P.S Grade 8 Graduation is taking place on Tuesday, June 24th at 6:30pm in the school gymnasium. Please note that students are participating in a dress rehearsal during the school day on Monday June 23rd after lunch. A special thank you to the parents who have attended our committee meetings, helped with organization and volunteered their time to plan this important event. STUDENT COUNCIL: BBQ Baskets Friday, June 20th is the date for our annual Northern Lights Public School Barbecue. During this event, we will be raffling off a number of themed baskets created by each grade at the school. To assist us with this endeavour, we are asking that each child in the school bring in an item related to the basket designated for their grade, or a donation of a toonie ($2.00) that will be used to purchase items for the basket. Thank you for your assistance. TD SUMMER READING CLUB – at the Aurora Public Library Aurora Public Library invites children ages 12 and under to participate in the TD Summer Reading Club, Eureka! Whether you invent a new way to fly, build a robot to do your chores or create something cool out of junk, it’s a great summer for making your way to Aurora Public Library to join the club! Preschoolers are invited to join, as long as they can tell us about the books they’ve read. Come to the Children and Young Adult Information Desk starting June 26th to register for the program. Over the summer, children are asked to read a total of 12 Aurora Public Library books at their reading level. After reading 3 library books, come to the Children and Young Adult Information Desk and tell us about one of the titles; you’ll get a cool sticker and a small prize! Deadline to complete the program is August 30th SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS Annual School BBQ What Have we Done? Mark the date—Friday June 20th is barbeque night. Hope to see you there! During this past month council were very pleased to hold 2 free parenting nights focusing on strategies for managing stress and worry in families. We have received great feedback on these evenings and hope to hold more in the future.
