Autumn Autumn Term Term 2016 English Topic In English we will begin by finding out about how to use different sentence structures and recapping the key grammatical vocabulary. (You will find the prompt sheets in the ‘Useful Information’ section of the website) The children will rewrite familiar stories using different sentence structures for effect. We will then move on to information texts based on our Topic work, where the children will learn how to organise and structure their writing to create their own booklets about transport and exploration. Our topic this term is Transport through the Ages. We will be finding out about how and why transport has changed over time. We will be exploring the impact of the Industrial Revolution and some of its key figures such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This will link in well with our Science topic Forces, where the children will find out about the forces around us and how pulleys, levers and gears are used. We will use the knowledge gained through Science in D&T to design and build devices using levers, pulleys and cams. Homework Maths The children will be set either Maths or English homework which will be linked to our work in class. It will be given out on a Friday and is due in at the latest on Thursday morning (it can be handed before then) If your child is unsure what to do they should come to one of the Sapphire Class adults before Thursday. The children are also expected to read a minimum of three times a week and this should be recorded in their reading record books, which should be signed by an adult at least once a week. We also collect in the children’s reading record books on a Thursday to check their merit chart and that they have read a minimum of three times a week. Please help your child to remember to bring in their signed reading record book, as this is part of preparing them for high school. PE will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays . Please ensure your child has jogging bottoms and a jumper as PE will be outside unless it is raining heavily. Earrings should not be worn on PE days. In Maths we will be exploring place-value and how this can be used to write, order and compare numbers. We will investigate how place-value can be used to multiply and divide by 10,100, 1000 . . .; why this works; and how to apply this to converting measures. The children will then apply what they have learnt to column methods of calculation and use their understanding to reason and solve problems mathematically. Check out the Sapphire Class ‘Useful Information’ section on the website for prompt sheets and resources related to our maths work. RE In RE we will be studying Buddhism. The children will learn about the key beliefs and practices of Buddhism and compare these to Christianity. They will explore the nature of heroes and discuss the human qualities that a hero needs. We will link this to the Olympic and Paralympic games We will be discussing how religious beliefs impact on the choices that we make and link this to the rules we live our lives by. As always a key part of our RE will be exploring our own beliefs and respecting the beliefs of others.
