When there is snow on the ground, it’s often tempting to stay inside with the children until spring arrives. Yet winter is a special time of year when nature only seems to have disappeared. Children love to play detective, and winter is a wonderful time to bundle up and head outdoors to discover the tracks and trails of creatures that live outside or in hidden places all year round. Ask children, “How do animals stay warm in the cold months? What do they eat? Do you think some animals are sleeping?” If you leave their favorite food in sight, birds will visit your yard or back porch. Find or make a simple feeder to hold birdseed and encourage children to watch them all winter. What are the types of birds they see? What colors are birds?
