COAHOMA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVE HONORS AT THE UIL ONE ACT PLAY COMPETITION
Coahoma Junior High School presented The Ash Girl, written by Timberlake Wertenbaker and published by
Dramatic Publishing, at the District 5-3A UIL One Act Play competition on December 3, 2015, in Stanton, TX.
Glenn R. Standly adjudicated the event. Mr. Standly is a retired educator. He has directed over 100 shows on
the high school, college and community theatre stages. Mr. Standly enjoys working with the students and
seeing what talent evolves from their hard work.
The Ash Girl is an exciting, encouraging tale that is an enjoyable parallel to the well-known Cinderella story.
It's fast-paced and adventurous while examining profound insight about love, human nature and the
importance of self-belief and perseverance – all in the context of a well-told children's story.
“We held auditions the first week of September and I was pleasantly surprised at the overall turn-out. Around 40
students came to audition for The Ash Girl. We ended up have a full cast of 15 actors/actresses, 5 crew, and 4
alternates. The majority of the students had no previous theatre experience, therefore, we had a lot of work
ahead of us. The students exceeded my expectations and totally committed to the production. I watched all the
students grow in confidence, acting ability, and camaraderie. Contest day was by far my favorite part of the
process because I watched the students shine up there on the stage. They did an amazing job and they knew that
they had done their best performance to date. CJH OAP cast members all brought home an acting award and our
stage manger brought home a technical award. The final outcome of the contest was disappointing but in my mind
it's about the overall process. These kids are winners and it was shown through their dedication and hard work
from start to finish. We do theatre to learn more about ourselves and others around us and the cast and crew now
have a memory that will last a lifetime.” – Tabatha Wright, Director
