It is my wish that 2016 will bring many successes for everyone. I am certainly proud of our accomplishments first semester. Checkout the “Highlights section” of this newsletter to view a list of our most recent recognitions. As we begin a new semester we look forward to the opportunities it brings. A time to make positive changes: improved grades, appropriate behaviors, and good decision-making. I encourage everyone to have a positive attitude toward this semester. All students will be required to wear regular school ID’s at all times. Additional information will be provided in the May and/or August newsletter. OPEN HOUSE DROP-IN 2016 February 18 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The purpose of this event is to allow parents an opportunity to personally receive their student’s progress report from the school. After receiving the progress report, parents may visit teachers to briefly discuss grades, attendance, and other matters. If a conference is desired, it can be arranged at that time. A total of 17 cadets in attendance. Provided a Color Guard for the Spirt of ’45, honoring WWII veterans at Furman University. Total of 7 cadets in attendance. Provided Color Guards/Flag Details for all Home Varsity and JV Football games. Provided Color Guards for all Varsity Basketball games. TCBY fundraiser for ACS/RFL selling a total of 591 cups and raising a total amount of $671. Conducted 9/11 ceremony during Power Hour. Conducted a trash pick-up for the Litter Free Game raising $250 for March of Dimes. Schoolwide recycling pick-ups. 5 total. Provided a Color Guard/Work Crew for 2 Coaches 4 Character presentations at Redemption Center. Conducted Adopt-a-Road trash pick-up with a total of 67 cadets for both pick-ups. Unit Goals submitted to HQ with the intent to earn another Distinguished Award with Merit for 2015 2016. Earned an “Exceeds Standards” for the HQ conducted unit evaluation. MoD (March of Dimes) candle fundraiser, 46 cadets participated, 362 candles sold, totaling in $1,822.80 funds raised. Fall Skate Night recruiting event at Roller Sports. 36 cadets in attendance with 3 guests. Provided Color Guards for Tiger Cheer Competition. 2 total. Color Guard and Workers supporting GHS and Cancer Society Run4Life Event in Greenville with 20 cadets in attendance. Veterans Day ceremony at Blue Ridge Middle School with 7 cadets in attendance. Provided Escorts and a Color Guard for Shepard’s Care Retirement Home pageant. Total of 13 cadets and 7 escorts. Unloaded Christmas Trees for the Sertoma Club to help underprivileged children and families. Total of 9 cadets in attendance. Worked and Donated the Community Blood Drive in the Multi-Purpose room. 34 cadets participated with 83 units collected. Orienteered Crowders Mountain with 26 cadets. Led the Greer and Travelers Rest Christmas Parade with color guard, senior staff, and flight. 32 cadets participated in Greer, with 16 cadets in Travelers Rest. Page 4 Blue Ridge High School GUIDANCE NEWS SENIOR UPDATES If you have not already completed your college applications, time is running out. May 1st is Commitment Day for all colleges. You need to submit your application as soon as possible. If you need assistance with the application process, please make an appointment to see your School counselor. Test scores for college entrance exams (ACT and/or SAT) must be submitted directly from the testing agency. Colleges must have an official copy which comes from the testing agency. If you did not list the college on your registration form prior to taking the test for the college you are applying to receive your scores, you will need to request an additional copy and pay the fee. You must complete a transcript request form to receive transcripts to submit to colleges which you have applied. The first three transcripts are free. Per District policy, after the first three there is a $5.00 per transcript charge. Please note: It is now the responsibility of the student to pick up their transcript from the Guidance Office. Students will receive the transcript in a sealed envelope and then would need to mail it to the respective college or scholarship organization. We are getting in new scholarships every day, so it is very important for all seniors to regularly check their school email, check the scholarship handbook on the Guidance webpage, and school announcements on the BRHS homepage. www.fastweb.com is another great source to find scholarships. Each scholarship has its own requirements, so you must read the scholarship criteria to see what you are qualified to apply for. Students will receive graduation tickets at the Timmons practice. **Students need to keep these dates and times open for graduation practices. Practices are usually two (2) hours long. **If you miss either graduation rehearsal, you will not be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony. COURSE REGISTRATION FOR 2016-2017 Course registration for the 2016-2017 school year will begin in March. The online catalog of courses will be available the week of February 22nd. There will be links to flow charts for all subjects and information on AP courses on the front of the school website. Teachers will begin making course recommendations in the current academic classes for students at the beginning of March. Beginning March 7- March 11 the online registration “window” opens for parents and students to select their academic classes recommended by teachers and to request electives and alternates. Students and counselors will meet to discuss and register for next year courses. Please review the course requests for your child and make any necessary changes directly on the signed registration form. We make every effort to place students into the courses of their choice; however, due to changes in the master schedule and/or class sizes, it may be necessary to place students in alternate courses. Please review the registration dates for registering and submitting required documentation. February 25th: Class meetings for 9th, 10th and 11th grade students. March 7 – March 11: Online registration window is available for parents and students to register on the portal. April 8th: Registration forms go home to parents for review. April 22nd: Signed registration forms returned to Guidance with any changes. April 29th: Last day to make changes to course requests. ACE AWARDS (ADVOCATES FOR CHARACTER AND EDUCATION) We are excited to announce the 4th Annual ACE Awards (Advocates for Character and Education) will take place in May 2016. At this time, one male and one female student who is considered a true “unsung hero” in their school will be honored. This award was created to recognize students who often go unnoticed for one reason or another, but have accomplished great things in their community or school, or have overcome great adversities in their life. These students will be recognized at the ACE Awards Banquet for outstanding character and academic effort. This action puts the students at high risk for being hit. Please don’t park on the hill in front of the school to pick up your student. The bus parking lot is not a pickup area for students after school. The LEFT lane in front of the school is a passing lane. Please do not let your student exit from a car in this lane. It is very dangerous. Students need to turn in all books and clear all debts as soon as possible. Be aware of the attendance rules listed on pages 9-10 of the student handbook. To receive credit, students must not miss more than 5 days for a unit course of 3 days for a 1/2 unit course. Any days beyond the 5 must be lawful. Do not schedule trips or vacations for school days, exams, or snow days. Student can miss no more than 5 days in semester classes or 3 days in quarter courses. Cruises, weddings, vacations, mission trips, non-BRHS sponsored events, etc., are not excused absences. Always bring a note when you are absent from school. No parent notes or medical notes for absences will be accepted if not turned in within 3 days of your return to school. If you have any questions at anytime about your student's attendance, please contact the teacher first.. All early dismissals must be between class periods: 10:20,11:55, or 2:15. No early dismissals during exams. No early dismissals will be accepted over the telephone, by fax, or by email. Visitors must enter the building through the front door leading into Mrs. Thornton’s office. You will sign in on a computer, with proper ID, and be given a badge. Wearing badges is required on site. Blue Ridge High School Page 7 BRHS Highlights for 1st Semester - 2015-2016 Each year The Fine Arts Center host the Greenville County High school art teachers and, this year, not only did Mr. Kevin Clinton win second place in the show, he also came away with the Best in Show Award. The Fine Arts center awards dollars to the artist and to the artist's school to be used in the teacher's art department. Blue Ridge will receive $400! Congratulations! (And, just for historical purposes, this is the second time Kevin Clinton has won the Best in Show Award!) Science Teacher, Emily Annas, recently earned funding at DonorsChoose.org for classroom project called "Courtyard Garden Equipment". Lt. Col David L. Rogers and MSgt. Fred Fuller created a dynamic and supportive learning environment coupled with an excellent community outreach program. The instructors were providing outstanding leadership in administering the cadet centered citizenship program. The Blue Ridge High School cadets performed exceptionally well and took great pride in leading and accomplishing their unit goals. Congratulations also to Teacher Elaine Steiner who has been awarded with a grant in the amount of $1,500.00 from the Greater Greer Education Foundation. The Grants Committee and the Board of Directors were impressed with Ms. Steiner’s plans to purchase TI-84 Graphing Calculators to provide graphing technology to her students! Mr. Farnham and Mrs. Steiner will be awarded the grants at a reception/press conference on January 28, 2016 at the Greer City Hall. Thank you Mr. Farnham and Mrs. Steiner for your dedication and time in planning these programs for the students in our school!!! Page 10 Blue Ridge High School Athletics Cheerleading Congratulations to the JV and Varsity cheerleaders for their wins at TR on Wednesday night, October 7. The varsity team scored an all time high and beat all competitors by at least 100 points. The varsity cheerleaders won their second consecutive region 2-AAA cheer championship this year. They also finished their season with a remarkable performance at state. Despite a technical difficulty, and the music stopping during their performance, they were able to perform a flawless routine. The cheerleaders finished 4th in the state! Cross Country (Congratulations to Austin Lane for getting the Freshman record last night in boys cross country. Austin is the first Freshman in BR History to break 17 minutes. Congratulations Cross Country Team! Congratulations to the girls and guys cross country teams who broke a total of 14 school records during the season and earned 6th place (girls) and 7th place (guys) at state on November 6 & 7. Fine Arts Band Congratulations to the Corps of Cadets for their 1st Place in Class finish at the Boiling Springs Tournament of Bands on Saturday, September 26. Performing in a steady rain, Blue Ridge also took 1st in class in Music Performance, Guard, and Percussion. Overall, the band finished 1st out of 16 bands in Music Performance and was awarded "Silver Grand Champion" of the day. Congratulations to the BRHS Corps of Cadets for winning the SCBDA Upper State Championship. The band competed on Saturday, October 24 at Belton-Honea Path against 20 of the state's finest bands in 3A competition. The Blue Ridge High School Corps of Cadets competed in 3A State Competition at Batesburg-Leesville on October 31, 2015. The Corps of Cadets brought home a 2nd place medal for their performance. Congratulations to all marching band members and their director, Mr. Eric Wells. Orchestra The following students auditioned at League Academy on Saturday, October 10, and made Region Orchestra! Kenadee Markham Shea O'Boyle Tyla Jackson Miles Johnson Mason Tate This is a big deal! There were over 200 students from the surrounding counties that auditioned. The students who made the orchestra will perform on November 14 at WHHS/Fine Arts Center. This was a good day for the BRHS Orchestra! The Music Club of Greenville will be providing $750 based on a request from Mrs. Audrey Bass for Bows and Cases for Blue Ridge and Greer High School Orchestras. The Music Club increased the amount that was requested but they felt like Mrs. Bass' schools would benefit from additional dollars to put towards the items she was requesting. Congratulations, Mrs. Bass and thank you for your diligence in raising your standards for music education. Drama Congratulations to the cast and crew of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Their hard work and dedication provided audiences with a wonderfully entertaining production.
