SPUN ALUMINUM PLUMBING VENT
DESCRIPTION
The Murphco sleeve-flange spun
aluminum plumbing vent is shop
fabricated in one piece (without joint
and solder) with a proven lathe. The
main purpose of the sleeve is to assure
the waterproofing around a vent pipe or
other roof penetrations such as electrical
wire exit, etc.
The corresponding spun aluminum cap
completes the vent waterproofing in a
simple application.

INSTALLATION
Sleeve:
This type of sleeve is used on roofs covered with B.U.R. asphalt felt and gravel surface
membranes, modified bitumen membranes or other prefabricated PVC and EPDM membranes.
With the model 1500, the sleeve is designed to cover the vent pipe previously wrapped with
mineral wool insulation on a height of 100 mm (4"). The model no. 1500 D is mainly used on
private residences and/or when the height is limited.
Model 1600, 1700 & 1800 sleeves are fabricated to assure the waterproofing around the circular
pipes (plumbing vent) of an exterior diameter from 100 @ 200 mm (4" @ 8").

To seal the sleeve to the membrane, it is recommended to prime the base flange on both faces,
with a primer compatible with the membrane materials. Set the base flange of the sleeve into a
bed of bituminous cement. Apply a second trowel layer of bituminous cement to seal the superior
face of the flange.
Flash-in the metal flange with 2 plies of cotton fabric and 1 ply of roofing felt into hot bitumen
(B.U.R.).*
For modified bitumen membrane, apply a reinforcing ply from the base of the sleeve to 6" out of
the edge of the flange then apply the cap sheet continuously. Apply a circular elastomeric
caulking joint around the sleeve on the finished membrane.
Cap:
The cap must be installed to ensure the waterproofing of the free space between the interior vent
pipe and the aluminum sleeve.
The cap models nos. 1523 & 1524 serve to complete the vent pipe waterproofing with the sleeve
model 1500. The model 1523 fits on vents with a diameter of 75 mm (3") and the model 1524
fits on vents with a diameter of 100 mm (4").**
The cap model 1550 is a "Chinese hat" shaped to permit the crossing of electric wires. The
original cap is perforated of 24 holes of 13 mm (½") diameter each. The hole may be modified
on site or made wider in factory request. This cap is built of 2 pieces of aluminum retained in
place by 2 metal screws. This cap may also be installed on a spun aluminum sleeve used for dry
cleaning exhaust. In this case, the cap is designed to assure the exterior waterproofing as well as
evacuating the condensation water outside. This cap is also retained in place by 2 metal screws.
The cap models 1624 & 1625 serve to complete the vent pipe waterproofing with the sleeve
model 1600; they fit on vents with a diameter of 100 @ 125 mm (4" @ 5").**
Teh cap models 1724, 1725 & 1726 serve to complete the vent pipe waterproofing with the
sleeve model 1700; they fit on vents with a diameter of 100 @ 150 mm (4" @ 6").**
The cap models 1824, 1825, 1826 & 1827 serve to complete the vent pipe waterproofing with
the sleeve model 1800; they fit on vents with a diameter of 100 @ 200 mm (4" @ 8").**

All cap models finishing by 05 are plain
caps to close permanently the useless
pipes. In this case, the spun aluminum
sleeve must be full of mineral wool to
prevent condensation. Such cap is
retained in place with an interior circular
caulking joint.
Any model of cap may be prepared on
request to close permanently all types of
sleeves (models 1500, 1600, 1700 &
1800).
Prior to cap application, it is
recommended to apply a continuous
bituminous cement ribbon or a
compatible caulking ribbon between the
interior surface of the cap and the pipe, in
order to prevent the highly probable
condensation water to return into the
insulated bell-shape sleeve base.
When this caulking joint is dry, it retains
the cap in place against vandalism.

When a reroofing project involves the installation of extra insulating thickness, the plumbing vent pipes
are too short. Instead of installing a prefab coupling, an extended aluminum sleeve, tapered shape for
stable position, may be used as simpler and inexpensive pipe extension.
