Cultural Immersion
You will earn college credits while in a land rich in culture,
history and ornate architecture. Ecuador straddles the Earth’s
equator and boasts a landscape ranging from lush, tropical
rainforests to glaciated volcanoes and the whitewater falls
of the great Amazon tributaries. You’ll meet warm-hearted
people, taste delicious food and bask in its abundant beauty.
cultural immersion
Quito
The capital city of Ecuador, founded in the 16th century, sits on the ruins
of an Inca city. It is 9,000 feet above sea level. Quito has the best-preserved and least altered historic center in Latin America. Quito’s unique
architecture is a mix of Spanish, Italian, Moorish and Flemish influence.
The city occupies a small basin in the great central plateau formed by the
volcano, Pichincha.
Otavalo
Program Features:
• Visit Ecuador’s capital, Quito
• Visit with business leaders
• Tour the Baños Mineral Springs and the Otavalo artisan marketplace
• Visit Universidad del Azuay and its students
• Tour the Inga Pirca Ruins and Cajas National Park
• Engage in service in a local village
• Shop in traditional village markets
Otavalo is a city known for its local artisans, who specialize in weaving
textiles and making local handicrafts. The city boasts a famous "Saturday
Market" that has made Otavalo's local artisans a popular stop with visitors to Ecuador.
Baños
Baños or Gateway to the Amazon has cascading waterfalls right below a
mountain where natural warm mineral water flows into the valley. The
people of this quiet little town created mineral spring parks where one
can go and bathe in the warm mineral pools.
Cuenca
Cuenca, the arts-rich historic center, is located in the sierra or highlands
of the Andes, in the southern region of Ecuador. It is 7,500 feet above
sea level. Cuenca is designated a World Heritage Trust site because of its
many historic buildings. While there, we'll visit the Inga Pirca Ruins and
Cajas National Park.
Guayaquil
Guayaquil is a sea port and commercial center of Ecuador with more than
half the country’s companies based here. It is Ecuador’s largest city. The
city boasts the Malecón, a riverfront boardwalk.
