Literacy Throughout the half term there will also be elements of spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) entwined into Literacy lessons. Poetry; rhyming couplets – the pupils will be focussing on using rhyming couplets in a poem to create rhythm. They will be able to recite their own poem by the end of this unit, therefore there is also a focus on developing reading fluency and confidence. PE & Games The unit of focus for this term is athletics. The pupils will be taught to use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination. They will be developing flexibility, strength, techniques, control and balance to improve their performance. Book Study; The BFG by Roald Dahl – the pupils will be reading this book with a focus on developing fluency and stamina of reading longer texts. There will be some comprehension work based on the books as well as some descriptive writing based on settings to consolidate work from last half term. Maths The pupils will be focussing on: Addition and subtraction with money and measures Short multiplication/division Measures – converting ml/l m/km minutes/hours Recall of multiplication and division facts 12 x 12 Area and perimeter Fractions – equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator Summer 1 – RE & PSHE Computing The pupils will be learning how to write and send emails safely as well as use word processing software to create information posters about the Amazon Rainforest (our next topic). RE – Judaism; how is Judaism different to other religions? What is the Judaism way of life? The pupils will engage with sessions based around answering these questions and encouraging debate to ask further questions and learn about diversity. E-Safety There will also be a focus on the Royal family and British values to coincide with the Queen’s 90th birthday and St. George’s Day. History/Geography The pupils will be able to: Explain the differences between Ancient Greece and modern day Greece Place the Ancient Greek era on a timeline Understand the differences between Athens and Sparta Explain how the Greeks used their army and navy in warfare Explain the Battle of Marathon from different perspectives – both Athenian and Spartan To understand the introduction and the importance of the Olympics To identify some of the Greek Gods and the role they played in Greek daily life Art & Design Designing a mask for a character from a Greek myth – paying attention as to whether it is a comedy or a tragedy. Use clay to design and make a Greek vase with original design features Design and Technology Design and make a “hinged beast” with inspiration from a Greek myth. Science Sound – Sounds in the environment Know that sounds are made from vibrations Know that sounds can travel through solids, liquids and gases Structure of the ear in a human Animal adaptations – echolocation, sonar Introduce deafness and the British Sign Language Dynamics and pitch of musical instruments
