Born in Dafni Kozanis, Greece in 1966. Greek citizenship. Military obligations fulfilled July
1995 – July 1996.
Maries and father of 2 boys and one girl.
Fluent in Greek and English.
Research Interests
My research involves insect ecology, demography, evolution, behavior, and pest
management. In our laboratory, fruit flies of the family Tephritidae are used as model
species to address various research questions including (a) life history evolution, (b)
geographic variation in life history traits, (c) factors shaping life histories in field conditions,
(d) age structure of wild insect population, (e) cost of reproduction mainly that of males, (f)
aging and health dynamics in insects, (g) age-specific expression of innate behaviors and its
connection with insect performance, life span and reproduction, (h) the relationships
between Tephritid fruit flies and their host fruits, (i) sexual behavior of Tephritid fruit flies,
and (k) effects of insect symbions on life history traits. A further line of research regards the
development of Area Wide Management Programs based on spatial population dynamics
and population modeling. This also encompasses the development of trapping systems and
methodologies for various insect pest species. The application of the Sterile Insect
Technique, within the framework of Area Wide Integrated Pest Management, and the
improvement of its efficacy following pre-release manipulations of sterile males is also
within my research interests. Divergence of geographically distant populations in various
fitness traits comprises a major part of the research that is currently being undertaken in
my laboratory. Special emphasis has been placed on the adaptation of invasive species such
as the Mediterranean fruit fly in marginal environments for its existence. Yet another area
of study has involved the biology of invasive Tephritids and the life history components
determining a successful invader. We have recently published an extensive study (analyzing
historic and contemporary detection of all tropical fruit fly species) assessing the invation
dynamics on fruit flies (Tephritidae) in California (Papadopoulos et al. 2013). I am also
working towards explaining the expansion of the geographic distribution of the
Mediterranean fruit fly in northern – cooler temperate regions. The ongoing collaboration of
1
my research group with two groups of geneticists has recently expanded the scope of my
research, to include the genetics of invasive species in Europe (north American Rhagoletis
spp.), and the Middle East (Dacus cilliatus).

Our paper Papadopoulos et al. (2013) “From trickle to flood: the large-scale, cryptic invasion of
California by tropical fruit flies” was extensively discussed in Los Angeles Times and other
media in California.
Our paper Plexida et al. (2012) “Quantifying beetle and bird diversity in a Mediterranean
mountain agro-ecosystem” made a cover to Israel Journal of Ecology and Evolution where it was
published.
Our paper by Diamantidis et al. (2011) “Population-specific demography and invasion potential
in medfly” made a cover to Ecology and Evolution where it was published.
Our paper Papadopoulos et. al. 2002. “Supine behavior predicts….” was highlighted in the
webpage of the Proceedings of Royal Society as one of the most interesting of the issue.
The above paper was highlighted in Science (magazine), and Discover. Extensive discussion of
the findings of this paper was included in “Science virtual magazine SAGE”, the web page of
UCDavis, and the UCDAVIS Magazine (Winter 2003, page 10).
The importance of our findings was highlighted in Washington Times, ΑBC News, Science
Illustrated (Illustreret Videnskab) (www.illustreretvidenskab.dk), and Kathimerini (Greek
newspaper). There were also notes in the following web sites (1) Clari news, (2) About Facts Net,
(3) PreventDisease.com and (4) Personal MD your life online, (5) Science Daily.
