Letter from a Family who received Family Support Funds from the Foundation “Please convey our sincerest thanks to all the members of the O’Berry Center Foundation for the funds to purchase the bike trailer we needed for Martha to join us on our precious family outings. The trailer has arrived, been assembled, and already put to good use out on our local greenway around the lake. One of the neatest things is that I can hear Martha laughing as the wind brushes her face as she sees other people go by while she’s riding in the trailer. She truly enjoys it, as do all of us. Again we thank the Foundation for recognizing how much we wanted to “include” Martha, and for MAKING IT HAPPEN!!” Want more information? What We Do The O’Berry Center Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that began in 1990. The mission of the Foundation is to improve the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities by funding family support, scholarships, education, and research in the 65 central and eastern North Carolina counties that O’Berry Center Serves. Quality of Life Program As part of our mission, the Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals residing at O’Berry Neuro Medical Treatment Center located in Goldsboro, NC. For example, through our Quality of Life Program, the Foundation purchased a Pool Access Wheelchair (pictured bottom, left) which will allow individuals at OBNMTC to safely be able to be transferred in and out of the Therapeutic swimming pool. Individuals previously unable to benefit from aquatic physical therapy can now safely enjoy all of the benefits! Thanks to a grant from the Knights of Columbus, LAMB FOUNDATION, the Foundation was able to purchase two wheelchair accessible swings at OBNMTC. Jeff Whitener of Volunteer Services sits with a resident (pictured top, right) as she enjoys her first ride on the installed swings! What a wonderful sight to see such joy and excitement on her face! The O’Berry Center Foundation THE IMPACT OF WHAT WE DO! Do you remember that feeling you got as a child when you realized you could accomplish a task all on your own? It was completely liberating wasn’t it? That is how our Joseph feels every day now that he has his new stroller! Hello. Thank you for checking out the O’Berry Center Foundation’s Wayne County Navigation Guide for Developmental Disabilities Resources. This guide was made possible through a grant from Innovative Approaches of Wayne County which is a grant funded initiative of the Children and Youth Branch, NC Division of Public Health. Joseph, a remarkable young boy with special needs needed a specialized stroller so he can get involved in fun activities like dances, and anywhere else his caregiver wanted to take him! With the help of donors like you, we were able to loan him one for as long as he needs it! Now Joseph is enjoying day to day activities that we take for granted. I hope that you will take a moment to read this excerpt from a thank you letter we received from Joseph’s mother: This guide was created because we found that many families that reach out to us for help often are not aware of the other resources that may be available to help their child or loved one with a developmental disability in their county. If we as a Foundation can not help with one of our programs, we want to at the very least provide you with other resources that may be of assistance. Our goal is to ensure that families that come to us for help are more aware of other resources in their county after they connect with us. Its that simple. This booklet provides a little information about us, the O’Berry Center Foundation, and then provides you with a list of many available resources in your county. To get a full description of what each agency is about, please visit our website: www.oberrycenterfoundation.org Click on Resource and Referral Program where you will find a map of all of the counties we serve. Click on your county and all of your information will pop up. Its that simple. We hope you benefit from this Resource and find the assistance you need for your loved one with special needs! “Joseph could not do without this stroller. With it he can get out in the community. His healthcare worker would not have a way to transfer him. He can go to church, go shopping and go to all the activities for the handicapped. This stroller has been a real blessing to us.” Thanks so much. -The Carlton Family As you can see, there is no better way to show the impact of what we do than a letter from a family! Joseph and his family are very excited that he is getting a chance to tell his story so he can help others with developmental disabilities! Without this assistance, these special individuals will never be able to experience life with the same sense of fulfillment as you or I. Just these slight improvements in their quality of life make a world of difference. How can YOU help more folks like Joseph? Thanks for asking!
