Jeremy O’Connell ‘Towards Tokyo’ Fa A unique sponsorship opportunity Jeremy racing at the 2014 Laser European Championships ‒ Split, Croatia Jeremy O Connell is a world-class international sailor with the goal of representing Australia at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. He competes in the Laser class, one of the most physically and tactically demanding sailing classes to compete in the Olympic Games. Jeremy has chosen this class because of the attributes required to be competitive at the front of the fleet; fitness, mental toughness, consistency, and tenacity, on and off the water. You ve probably heard about the Laser and sailing in general in recent years. Tom Slingsby, Australia s laser sailing legend, won our first individual 2012 Olympic Games Gold medal, pushing sailing into the spotlight. Jeremy is on the pathway to achieving this kind of success; ultimately, a Gold medal at the Olympic Games. He is a current scholarship holder at the Victorian institute of Sport, which recognizes him as having the potential to succeed in his goals. We invite you to be part of Jeremy s Journey. Jeremy’s Journey Jeremy has had a successful year on the water during 2014, competing in two ISAF (International Sailing Association Federation) World Cups, one EUROSAF event, the Laser European championships, and the ISAF World Championships. Highlight include winning races in both the Palma World Cup, and the European Championships, and finishing 29th and 33rd overall respectively. “Jeremy is one of the most highly motivated sailors in Australia, conducting an impressively professional campaign covering every area. This, coupled with his obvious talent, will see him go far in the sport. To give an example of the level Jeremy has already reach, at last year's Sail Melbourne ISAF World Cup Event, Jeremy beat the current Olympic Gold Medalist in the Laser Radial Class.” Unfortunately Jeremy has been left off the Australian Sailing Squad for 2015, but this hasn’t stalled his ambition to move up the leader board at major events across the globe. If anything, it has made him hungrier and more determined to succeed. Jeremy’s plans for 2015 involve a full season in Europe, competing against the best laser sailors in the world, and proving he is a top competitor both domestically and internationally. Goals for 2015 include finishing in the top ten at ISAF World Cups, and finishing in the top 10 at the World Championships; therefore qualifying himself for the Australian Sailing Team. These sorts of goals won’t be accomplished easily, and Jeremy has a team of coaches, strength and conditioning experts, nutritionists and physiotherapists behind the scenes to ensure no stone is left unturned in his quest for success. - Laura Baldwin, Australian Sailing Team Coach Tom Slingsby racing at the London 2012 Olympic Games Key Facts about Sailing • People from high-income households have the greatest tendency to participate in sailing (25%) • 28% of the Australian population is interested in sailing; of that, 73% are between the ages of 36-60. • The Australian Olympic Sailing Team collected 3 of Australia’s 7 gold medals at the 2012 Olympic Games • Worldwide, over 50% of sailing enthusiasts are in the AB Demographic grouping.
