Proofreading by Bill Crabbe
I
admit it, I’m a terrible
proofreader. Even if I’ve
gone over something
multiple times, it never fails that
five minutes after I’ve sent it off
somewhere I discover at least
one more error. I’m just one of
those people who reads more
holistically, or so I like to tell
myself. My wife suggests that it
could be related to my inability
to find things that are on a shelf
in front of me in the refrigerator.
But I’m not alone. Most people
don’t proofread well, and it doesn’t
just indicate an inability to attend.
It has to do with how we read. Let
me give an example adapted from
something that has been rattling
around with cognitive scientists
for many years. Look at the
sentence below.
“Finished files are the final
result of years of scientific study,
performed by professional scientists
of various types who fully benefit
from the experience of years.”
Do a quick count of the number
of “f ”s in that sentence.
Most people see nine on a first
read, even if they work at it. But
there are actually more. Where are
they? Even if you reread it, it may
be difficult for you to find them
all. There are actually thirteen, and
the ones that are usually missed
are the ones in the word “of.” Why
is that? Well, as with everything
else there are theories. One is that
“of ” actually sounds like it ends in
a “v” not an “f,” so we read right
past it. Another is that we read
things more as units, so that a
word as common as “of ” simply
isn’t seen as a combination of
letters. So we don’t think to break
it up that way when we go to count
letters.
But that’s just one issue, one of
many. Try to read this sentence.
“Aoccdring to a rscheearch at
Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t
Visit Your Relatives
it’s easy to get
detached from
our families.
How many of
you can recall
reunions with
your families
when you were
small, or you
planned them
yourselves?
It’s no easy task to get everyone
to be able to be at the same place
at the same time. Travel over the
holidays can be expensive and
stressful. Our holidays can end
up being less than we anticipated
which can make us resentful.
Well, there’s a day in May (the
18th) that’s called, “Visit your
Relatives Day.” It would seem a
better time to travel-- less people,
no heavy coats to lug around or
By Patty Endres
Boy, our families are sure spread
out these days. We could all start
out in a large family living in the
same house and somehow when
we grow up and go to college
we can end up all living across
the country! Our society is so
transient now. We travel to and
live so many different places that

Now, I’ll bet you could read that
without a great deal of difficulty.
Of course, later research has
suggested that there is more
involved than simply the first and
last letters being in the correct
place, but you get the drift.
Proofreading is hard because
reading itself is not some kind
of simple linear process. It is a
complex cognitive action.
When I think of it that way I
don’t feel so bad about the fact that
I proofread so poorly.

Syncopation
Station
Syncopation Station is a Senior
Adult Tap Dance Troupe Directed
by Deneice Dyer since 2003.
We began in Evans with Betty
Grauberger with a class of over
20 dancers dancing at the Meeker
Building in Evans. We have
recently shifted to the Greeley
Senior Center and are looking
for more active adults to join our
Troupe!
Each year we perform at the
Silver Bells Social during the
Festival of Trees at the UCCC, and
in Denver each May to celebrate
National Tap Dance Day. Other
performances for private groups
and retirement homes keep us
moving as well. We have fun in
our classes and participants do
not have to perform; it is a good
challenge, however, to be sure you
know and remember your steps!
Cardio, bone strength and
accurate mind work are all
improved and maintained in
these active 60-88 year old young
people. Some original dancers are
still with us and most had never
tapped before!
We meet twice a week, Tuesdays
9-10am at the Greeley Rec
Downtown in the dance studio
and Thursday 1-2:30pm at the
Family Fun Plex. We have dancers
from Evans, Greeley and Windsor,
and some recently from a Fort
Collins Troupe to dance a Military
Medley with us to honor our
troops at our National Tap Day
Celebration May 21. We will be
performing this Medley in the
Fall in our communities! Contact
Deneice Dyer at dancinangelz@
yahoo.com for more information
about dancing with us or having
us dance for you! We can open a
Beginner Tap/Brush- up for any
new friends to introduce you
or get you back in your dancing
shoes if we have enough interest!
