“Rachel Cares” Event
Ten-year old Rachel Hare has never visited St. Jude Children‟s Hospital
in Memphis nor has she ever met a child who was a patient at St. Jude, but she is
on a mission to make a difference in the lives of children affected by catastrophic
diseases.
Her passion for the children of St. Jude began many years ago when
attending a school-wide assembly at Northeast Elementary for the upcoming St.
Jude Math-a-Thon. There she watched a video about the children who often call
St. Jude home for long periods of time, and learned about the organization‟s
mission. “That was all it took,” stated Rachel‟s mother, Jennifer, “she came home
from school and talked on end about how those kids needed her help.”
From then on she participated in the annual Math-A-Thon at school, and
watched with sincere concern at every program that was available about St. Jude.
Rachel says “I love going to the computer and watching the videos of the
children. I know that cancer and other diseases are things we want to get rid of. Kids should have fun with their friends
and be happy.”
In 2010 Rachel and her family participated in the “Radio Cares” and “Country Cares” radiothons, sponsored by
Allegany Radio Corporation (Magic 100.5 and 99.5 The Wolf). Rachel loved meeting the representative from St. Jude and
helping out with raising money for the children. After that, she wanted to do her own event, planning everything from
start to finish, to support St. Jude.
With the help of Joe Caporale and his team at the radio stations, they worked with Rachel and her family to
create “Rachel Cares”. The event will be held on Saturday, May 7, from 10am to 5pm at the Country Club Mall. This
event will be the final event following two days of the annual radiothons. A representative for St. Jude will be on hand
working right along side Rachel for this worthy cause. Joe Caporale, Allegany Radio Corp. stated “So many of our
community partners have been working together to support Rachel, so she can support St. Jude Children‟s efforts. We
are thrilled to contribute to Rachel‟s endeavors because she is a child wanting to do something that is bigger than her.”
Events that day include Wii and Xbox gaming stations, courtesy of GameStop, on large flat screen TVs, courtesy
of Sears. Kids of all ages can try out the latest games. Rachel‟s Northeast Elementary School community will be
participating in the Wii dance and/or game challenge, from 11am to 1pm, when the students can take on their favorite
teacher or staff member. Also, friends from John Humbird Elementary will be putting their teachers and staff to the test
from 1pm to 3pm. At 3:30 the Chick-fil-A cow, the f.y.e. mascot, Mario, and Luigi will take each other on for a mascot
dance off with the Wii „Just Dance‟ game.
Frostburg State University cheerleaders will be on hand all day to teach children basic cheers, tumbling, and
formations at no charge. At 11:30, Fort Hill cheerleaders will perform in the food court with Kick Masters‟ demo team
taking the stage at 3pm. Chick-fil-A at Country Club Mall will donate 20% of sales that day to St. Jude also. Maryland
CHIP Program and the Drug & Alcohol Abuse Council will be on hand to provide families important information.
