The 13th Amendment 1) How is this amendment different
from the Emancipation Proclamation?
2) Many Southern states ratified this
amendment only because it was a
condition for readmission back into the
Union. How did the passage of this
amendment alter the way of life in the
South?
The 14th Amendment 3) Why would an equality amendment
take longer to pass versus the
amendment to abolish slavery?
4) We know that Blacks did not have
equal protection for almost a century
after this amendment was passed. Do
you know of any instances in which
African Americans were not treated
equal in society? List three examples.
The 15th Amendment 5) Literacy tests were reading exams
used to prevent African Americans
from voting. Why would this be a
successful method to keep Blacks from
voting?
6) Why would the 15th Amendment
anger women’s rights activists?
7) Which political party aggressively supported these three “Reconstruction” amendments?
