LE SOUEF FAMILY
ERNEST ALBERT LE SOUEF, 1869-1937
Second son of the ten children of Albert Alexander Cochrane Le Souef and his wife
Caroline, née Cotton, Ernest Le Souef was born on 13 September 1869 at Elwood,
Melbourne. In 1888 he was accountant to the Zoological and Acclimatization Society
of Victoria. In 1895 he qualified as a veterinary surgeon, working at night while
studying, and was appointed honorary veterinary surgeon to the society. In 1897 he
was appointed director of the Perth Zoological Gardens. He bought animals in the
eastern colonies for the opening of the Zoo on 17 October 1898. On 20 April 1899 he
married Ellen Grace, daughter of Rev. Friedrich Hagenauer, at Ramahyuck.
Ernest Le Souef was attached to the Second Light Horse Brigade headquarters in
Egypt, he was wounded and repatriated in 1917. He left the Australian Military
Forces in 1930 with the rank of colonel.
In 1919-32 Ernest Le Souef lectured part time in agriculture at the University of
Western Australia and in 1923 contributed to the containment of an outbreak of
rinderpest. In 1932 the zoo, plagued by financial problems, was transferred on Le
Souef's recommendation to the State Gardens Board. He then joined the Agricultural
Bank as veterinary adviser for the Margaret River district.
ELLEN GRACE LE SOUEF, nee Hagenauer, 1873-1947
The seventh child of the Rev. Frederick and Louise Hagenauer, nee Knobloch of
Germany. Both had been called to be missionaries in the Moravian Brotherhood,
later to merge with the Presbyterian Church. Ellen met Ernest as a young girl when
she and her parents lived at Ramahyuck Mission in Victoria. Ellen’s letters and diaries
describe the social life of the day. See also MN 1604, Hagenauer Family papers.
LESLIE ERNEST LE SOUEF, 1900-1996
Born in South Perth in 1900, the son of Ernest Albert and Ellen Grace (nee Hagenauer)
Le Souef, Leslie was educated at Perth Modern School and the University of Western
Australia, then Melbourne University.
During the Second World War, Le Souef served overseas, attaining the rank of Major
and Lt. Col. in command of the Australian Army Medical Corps. He raised and
trained the 2/7 Australian Field Ambulance Unit in 1939. He was captured by
German soldiers and made a prisoner-of-war on the Island of Crete.

For his work whilst a prisoner-of-war, he was awarded the Medaiile d’Honneur du
Service de Sante Militaire and the Medaiile de la Reconnaisance Francaise.
Dr. Le Souef was the honorary secretary of the British Medical Association, WA in
1930, he established the plastic and burns unit at Royal Perth Hospital and Princess
Margaret Hospital, Perth in 1948, was instrumental in establishing the West
Australian Medical School and was co-founder of the Anti-Cancer Council. In addition,
he was a member of the University Senate from 1936 to 1977 (excluding the Second
World War years) and Warden of Convocation from 1965 to 1968.
In 1950 he commenced development of his farming property “Glenellie” at Margaret
River, continuing there until March 1967 at which time he retired to Perth.
MILDRED HAGENAUER MANNING, nee Le Souef, 1901-1990
Born in South, attended Perth College and graduated from the University of Western
Australia in 1923, majoring in Zoology and Botany. Taught at Presbyterian Ladies
College, then at Wesley Boys’ College, until retirement in 1970. A distinguished
teaching career culminated in being awarded the MBE in 1964. Married, in 1951,
Bernard Manning, a well-known singer and actor in Perth, who founded the Gilbert
and Sullivan Society in Perth

Year, returning to Perth in February 1939. During this time, she sent descriptive
letters to her family and received letters from her sister, Nancy, who
mentioned a Pet Parade at the zoo (4370A/554)

name – Nancy sailed to the Eastern States, Mildred writes to her and to Leslie,

productions, “The Vagabond King” and “Bless the Bride” (ACC 4370A/605) –
She mentions a mannequin parade at Boans, frocks from the 1870s onward
(4370A/607) – Mentions her battle to have her salary increased – Thank you
letter from Mildred to her friends in the Book Circle who helped her celebrate
her 60th birthday (ACC 4370A/613) – Bernard Manning died in 1962, Mildred
went on a train trip with a travelling circus that performed at Kellerberrin,
Merredin and Kalgoorlie, includes a complete list of all the places the circus
visited, “Wierth’s Circus Tour WA 1962” – Includes a biographical account of

DIARIES - Mildred Manning nee Le Souef
Mildred began keeping a diary in 1915 at the age of 13 years and 8 months. She continued to keep a
diary almost to the year of her death. The diaries contained full entries covering her home, school
(Perth College) and social life. She mentioned well-known Perth families and important visitors to the
zoo. She pasted photographs in the diary pages. There are no diaries after 1987. Mildred died in 1990

Bernard Manning died on 5 May 1961 at Royal Perth Hospital – Mildred writes
about her love for him at the back of her diary – List of sympathy cards and

Mildred and Nancy continued to live together in Onslow Road – The Queen and
Prince Phillip visited Perth (1963) – Mildred went on a wildflower tour –

by Ernest le Souef when on a trip to buy animals for Melbourne Zoo. Some of
the designs were used for Perth Zoo. The book also contains Ernest Le Souef’s
