(P181 #13) With your partner, write a new beginning of “The Cask of

Fortunato's Perspective
Directions: (P181 #13) With your partner, write a new beginning of “The Cask of
Amontillado” from Fortunato’s (the victim) first-person perspective. Start at the
point where the two men meet at dusk and end when they begin their journey
underground. Let the reader know what Fortunato thinks of Montresor. Is he
guilty of the “thousand injuries” that Montresor refers to? Each person should be
writing but your stories should be identical. Your story should be one (1) full page.
Example:
It was another carnival night. I loved those party filled nights! I was walking down the street chatting
with strangers when I ran into my good old friend Montresor. The old devil! I had no greater friend in
the world than he! I rushed to greet him but slightly lost my balance because I’d had a few too many to
drink.
“Old friend, you are luckily met!” He said to me. We conversed for a few minutes before he brought up
something particularly interesting.
“I bought some amontillado full price but I didn’t even think to have it checked before paying. I am
actually going to ask Luchesi…”
“Luchesi?!” I interrupted. “He couldn’t tell wine from sherry!”
I insisted upon going to the vaults to taste the amontillado. Montresor tried to dissuade me.
“You have a cough. The catacombs are very damp and cold. Not to mention the nitrate. I would never
forgive myself if you got sick on my account!”
“Oh it’s just a little cough! I want the amontillado!” I told him.
We travelled a little ways and arrived at his palazzo. His servants thought he would be gone for the
weekend so the whole place was deserted. It was a bit eerie.
