GreeN rOOFING
Recently, green roofing systems have been attracting increasing interest because of the significant
contribution they can make to environmental compensation, particularly in areas where construction
makes permanent changes in the landscape.
Green roofs help reduce stormwater runoff because of these systems’ ability to retain and gradually
release rain water.
With this publication, IMPER ITALIA presents a
number of green roofing approaches based on
the latest generation TPO/FPA thermoplastic olefin and flexible polypropylene waterproofing membranes in the RUBBERFUSE Division’s Sintofoil
range.
The solutions presented here are suggestions that
can be modified or implemented with the assistance of our Technical Services, who will be happy to
provide specific designs on request. Also available on request is the Sintofoil Dataquad program,
a guided expert system for designing waterproof
roofing installations with Sintofoil synthetic membranes.
With Sintofoil Dataquad, users can develop their own
custom green roofing designs and print AUTOCAD
detail drawings.
Environmental compatibility
Green both in color and nature, Sintofoil is ideal
for intensive green roofing applications because of
its elastomerized polyolefin-based chemical composition. TPO thermoplastic olefin, in fact, ensures
total recyclability and total environmental compatibility: the basic technopolymers in Sintofoil membranes consist entirely of molecules of carbon and
hydrogen atoms. That means that there are no
pollutants such as chlorine, lead and other heavy
metals, and no plasticizers.
Root resistance
Sintofoil is certified to Germany’s stringent FLL
standards, which require a full two years of testing
at the certification agency.
BBA certification
All Sintofoil versions are certified by the major institutes in Europe and the rest of the world. Recently,
for example, Sintofoil’s British Board of Agrément
approval (No. 97/3422) was renewed after extensive laboratory testing on samples taken from roofing
installations that have been in service in several European countries for over 10 years demonstrated
that Sintofoil’s life expectancy exceeds 30 years.

The three levels of maintenance are defined as follows:
Low maintenance
Medium and high maintenance

(semi intensive systems and intensive systems)

Drawings 2 and 3
Maintenance operations are limited to inspecting
roofing system components.
For the plant layer in particular, inspection should
monitor the health of the vegetation, checking for
any parasites and infestations that could jeopardize
the system’s effectiveness.
Watering may be required occasionally to keep the
plants alive in extreme drought conditions.
In general, a 1000 m2 roof can be expected to require approximately 3 days of maintenance per year.
In addition to inspecting roofing system components and the plant layer as for extensive system,
maintenance will also include the normal trimming,
weeding and cultivation needed to keep the plants
healthy.
Equipment such as sharp tools or cultivation machinery that is not appropriate for the type of roofing must not be used.
Irrigation is required to maintain system performance, and must be specially designed.
Each intensive green roof will involve a certain
level of maintenance in terms of the amount of
water, labor and energy in general that it requires,
and which will be influenced by all of the factors
specific to the context, site and roofing system,
as well as by architectural features and type of
landscaping.
In general, a 1000 m2 semi intensive green roof
can be expected to require from 4 to 12 days of
maintenance per year.

Filter layer
Leveling layer
he filter layer prevents fine particles from the
growing medium from reaching the drainage layer
and clogging it over time.
Our filter layer consists of 100% isotactic polypropylene nonwoven needled and hot-calendered
DRENO FELT PP 200 geotextile.
Our leveling layer and substrate for the subsequent sealing layer consists of 100% isotactic
polypropylene nonwoven needled and hot-calendered DRENO FELT PP 200 geotextile.
Protection and drainage layer
Protection and drainage functions can be performed by a single preformed panel or by several
different products meeting the necessary requirements.
Sealing layer
Compartmentalization
Where the waterproofing membrane is not fully
bonded to the substrate, it is advisable to provide some form of compartmentalization below the
waterproof sealing layer. Compartmentalization
divides the area to be sealed into sections with
surface area varying from 100 to 300 m2 so that
the source of any leakage can be readily identified
and repaired.
SINTOFOIL ST synthetic waterproofing membrane
produced by coextruding a uniform UV resistant
thermoplastic olefin and flexible polypropylene
alloy with FLL root resistance certification, minimum thickness 1.5 mm.
Note (UNI 11235):
“It is advisable to use concrete slabs for mechanical protection in situations:
• mechanical damage to the sealing element may occur during construction as a result of medium- and high- intensity impact with equipment, scaffolding, etc.;
• it is expected that maintenance work will be performed by personnel without special training.
However, the use of concrete slabs entail a heavy load on the roof and make it impossible to repair the sealing element readily, as the latter cannot be reached without
demolishing the slab.
Where a concrete slab is used, it must be poured on top of a sepa separation layer.”
