Campus Ministry Chronicle February 4, 2013 Vol. 2 Issue 5 Campus Worship Kicks Off With 120 students, faculty, and staff in attendance, the first Campus Worship at Campbell University kicked off in a big way th on Sunday, January 20 . The realization of months’ worth of planning and praying, the first of the weekly evening worship services went beyond the expectations of many, including those behind the planning. Begun with a prayer, the service centered on worship through song, prayer, scripture, testimony, and renewal as students wrote down heartfelt prayers to leave to God on the altar. Campus Minister Faithe Beam and Graduate Assistant Louisa Monroe advise the planning team. So far the response to the new worship service has been generally positive. Planning team member Emily Maultsby acknowledges that, “It’s been very interesting to see the faith displayed in some students, and that’s something I haven’t been used to seeing around campus.” participated in worship on January th, 27 composed an original story based on the theme of unity as found in 1 Corinthians 12. “It was exciting..I really enjoyed seeing people react to a different way to interpret scripture,” McGowan remarked. Kyle Matthews coming to Campus Worship, Connections Coming to Campbell on April 10th th On Wednesday, April 10 , the ever popular Skit Guys will be performing at Campbell University. The Skit Guys will perform during Connections 200 that morning (for students only) and will then perform again that evening for all students, guests, and churches at 7pm in Turner Auditorium. For over 10 years, Tommy Woodard and Eddie James have traveled across the country teaching God’s Word through using comedy, drama, and whatever improv element they deem necessary. In addition to their traveling engagements, the Skit Guys have become popular for their online videos that have been seen my millions. th Their evening performance at Campbell on the 10 is open to the public. Kyle Matthews, one of Christian music’s most prolific songwriters of the past 20 years will be lending his gifts to Campus Worship and Connections in the coming weeks. th On Sunday, February 17 , Mathews will be leading the Campus Worship service at 7pm in Butler Chapel which all students, faculty/staff, and guests are welcome to attend. Matthews will also be performing in Connections 100 the th next day, Monday February 18 . Kyle's itinerant, ecumenical ministry includes almost as many speaking engagements as concerts, because those opportunities allow him to blend his songs and storytelling with preaching and teaching. Perhaps most disturbing, 2/3 of assaults are committed by someone known to the victim. Campus Ministry Chronicle Vol. 2 Issue 5 February 4, 2013 Roanoke Rapids Poverty Simulation: March 1-2 BFA Looking for AfterSchool Tutors st From noon on March 1 nd until noon on March 2 , WMUNC and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship will be sponsoring a poverty simulation in Roanoke Rapids, NC at the Union Mission. Last December, Campbell University took a mission team to the mission, which is located in one of the most persistent areas of poverty in the state. The Baptist Fellowship of Angier (BFA) is in desperate need of after-school tutors. Serving children in a low income area, CU students can volunteer any day of the week (M-Th) from 3:30-5:30pm. CAMPUS MINISTRY YOUTH DAY: FEB 16 The festivities for the day begin at 12:30pm with a special program for youth in Turner Auditorium featuring Tanya Crevier. Tanya has traveled all over the world performing exciting and unbelievable skills with basketballs and sharing an enthusiastic message of hope and inspiration to this generation. A member of the FCA Hall OF Champions, Tanya now travels all over the world sharing her unique basketball handling show and inspirational message of hope. She has performed at many colleges, NBA and WNBA games. In addition to the program featuring Tanya, youth groups will also receive meal vouchers for lunch in Gore Arena during an afternoon double-header featuring CU men’s basketball vs. VMI at 2:00pm followed by CU women’s basketball vs. UNC-Asheville at 4:30pm. On Saturday, February 16th, area youth groups and churches will have the chance to take in a double header of men’s and women’s basketball along with a special program on the campus of Campbell University. As part of their ongoing series of Youth Day’s throughout the year, Campus Ministry is proud to offer a fun-filled, exciting day for area youth. Campus Ministry Chronicle Vol. 2 Issue 5 February 4, 2013 Amena Brown coming on February 25th On Wednesday, February 25, renowned writer, poet, and speaker Amena Brown will be at Campbell University for Connections 200 and an evening performance that night in Turner Auditorium. As a poet, speaker, author, and event host Amena Brown’s words excite, ignite and inspire. Whether in front of audiences as intimate as 50 or as sprawling as 20,000, she has something to say that matters. Amena’s debut book release, Breaking Old Rhythms: Answering the Call of a Creative God, explores how experiences such as deejaying, learning to dance, having a broken heart, and practicing the rules of improv can teach us about our life’s rhythm and how we can better tune our ears and lives to the rhythm of God. She and her husband, Matt, also known as DJ Opdiggy, travel and perform a presentation of poetry, monologue and deejaying. Along with her spoken word recordings, Amena has participated in numerous professional and live recordings and video series. th Amena’s evening performance on the 25 is open to the public and is a Connections 200 credit opportunity.
