Danish public funding
Innovation Fund Denmark, IFD
Innovation Fund Denmark invests in new knowledge and technology creating growth and employment in
Denmark.
Industrial PhD program
An Industrial PhD project is a three-year industrially-focused PhD project conducted between a company, a
university and an Industrial PhD candidate.
General conditions:
- The application is drafted jointly by a company, a university and a candidate – the student is
employed in the private sector company and enrolled at the university.
- The company is the formal applicant, since the company employs the candidate and is the project
host upon approval of the project

- In 2017, funds for Greenlandic and Faroese companies are also possible.
The Industrial PhD candidate must:
- Have an education at a master’s degree level,
- Have obtained a weighted grade point average of at least 8.2 on the Danish 7-point grading scale or
9 on the 13-point scale for the entire master’s program (for both bachelor’s and master’s studies),
- At least have obtained the grade 10 for any final thesis or examination project.
o Applicants with ungraded final projects must submit a written assessment of the project.
o A candidate with a slightly lower grade point average can be approved if the candidate can
document research ability

Industrial Post-doc grants
Industrial postdoc grants are offered to support the development of research capacities in promising
individuals through their performance of specific R&D projects run jointly by enterprises and research
institutions.
- Project run times are 1-3 yrs
- PhD must have been obtained within the past 3 yrs.
- The project´s company mentor initiates the application with the Innovation Fund Denmark
- The postdoc is employed by the company and collaborates with the research institution.

Danida Fellowship Centre, DFC
Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC) implements more than 1,000 fellowships annually and administers research
activities for ~ DKK 230 million per year – both as part of the Danish development assistance programme.
DFC is a self-governing institution under Danida (the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
Within the framework of Danish development cooperation, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)
hereby invites Phase 1 applications for research grants.
 The two calls cover:
1. research collaboration projects in Danida priority countries “Window 1” - applied from
Denmark, Ghana, and Tanzania, and
2. research collaboration projects with partners in growth and transition countries “Window 2” applied from Denmark.
 Following Phase 2 applications in September 2017, the final prioritization process of these Calls will
take place in December 2017, so that selected projects may start in 2018.
 Potential applicants are invited to information meetings in Denmark, Tanzania or Ghana. Please
look at homepage for details.
The funding is conditional of the Danish Parliament’s approval of the 2017 Finance Bill.

Danish Private funding
The Villum Foundation
Funds may be applied for by individual researchers who are engaged in basic science and technology
research. The Programme does NOT comprise health science, medical or biomedical research. To a limited
extent, and based on a transparent budget, the Foundation will be ready to cover overhead costs directly
related to the project concerned.
VILLUM Experiment
This programme has been created for exceptional research projects that challenge norms and possess the
potential to fundamentally change our approach to key topics. Selection of eligible candidates is based on
the quality of the research proposals, their originality and potential.
 Researchers can apply for DKK 1-2m for typically up to two years to explore the breakthrough potential
of their idea.
 The budget covers all project-related expenses such as salary, travel, running costs, etc.
 The applicant must hold a doctoral degree or similar.
 The grant must be hosted by a Danish university or research institution. If required, the research or
part of it can take place at universities and research institutions abroad.

The Lundbeck Foundation supports biomedicine and health science
Lundbeck Fellowships
The fellowships are intended for especially promising young researchers, who are qualified to establish or
develop their own research groups
- Frontline basic- or applied research within the scope of the Foundation's Grant strategy
- For Danish or foreign researchers from abroad who wish to move to Denmark and continue their
research here
- Also for researchers at Danish universities and university hospitals
- PhD age: suggested timeframe 5-7 years
- Max. 5 years of funding
- DKK 10 million (approx. Euro 1,3 million)
Deadline: December 13, 2016 – interviews in April 2017, final decision: May 2017

Lundbeckfonden's stipends for sabbatical leave for research in biomedical sciences
Funds sabbatical leave for Danish-based researchers in clinical, translational and basic biomedical
sciences with a minimum 5-year tenure at the same Danish university, university hospital or other
research institution as associate professor, consultant, senior researcher or professor.
 Lundbeckfonden funds each stipend with a maximum of DKK 500,000.
 Time abroad must be for two to six months. Shorter or longer duration will not be
subsidised.
 Applications will be processed within 3-4 weeks.

Novo Nordisk Fonden
Supports biotechnology, biomedical research, clinical medical research.
Laureate Research Grant
A grant to enable scientists to come to Denmark to build their visionary research programs in new scientific
directions and breakthroughs within biomedicine and biotechnology. NNF Laureate Research Grants are
intended to enable exceptional researchers to conduct larger and longer-term projects, as well as to
facilitate collaboration across scientific and geographic borders.
The researcher may apply for a grant of up to 40 mio. DKK for a period of 7 years.
 Up to 10 mio. DKK for establishment of the laboratory during the first year
 following years funded at up to 5 mio. DKK/year.
After 5 years of research supported by the NNF Laureate Research Grant, the scientist may apply for one
period of extension of up to 7 years. Funding may again be up to 5 mio. DKK/year, with a limit of 35 mio.
DKK in total.
Funding may be utilized for:
Salaries, including for the grant recipient
Direct project costs, including materials/consumables and purchase of services
Equipment costs
Travel costs, including for conferences and project-related work
Publication costs

Challenge Programme 2017
The goal of the Challenge Programme is to make substantial contributions to the funding needed for
overcoming specific challenges in global health, technology and the environment.
For the application round of 2017, the Challenge Programme seeks to support outstanding scientists
working within the following two themes:
1. Big Data in Biomedicine
2. Design and Engineering of Biological Molecules and Systems
 For both themes, the research must be in-depth, but the subject can be cross-disciplinary, and
should not be considered limited to any particular research methodology or discipline.
 The Challenge Programme supports excellent scientists from 1-3 research groups, in addition to the
main applicant, to solve a shared research question within one of the Challenge themes in smaller,
collaborative centres with a unifying vision and mission.
 Scientific discipline and location is not restricted, but the main applicant and host institution must
be anchored in Denmark.
 Funding can be requested for up to DKK 10 million per year for 6 years, for a total budget of up to
DKK 60 million.
 Two stage application

Interdisciplinary Synergy Programme
Research funded under this programme should aim at interdisciplinary biomedical and biotechnological
approaches to resolve challenges in relation to health and disease, and better usage of natural resources.
The approach to solving the research problem should involve different scientific and/or technical disciplines
Up to DKK 5 mio. per year can be requested for a project running over 3 years, for a total funding of 15 mio.
DKK per project. A maximum of 4 projects will be selected for funding per year.
Funding can be requested to cover expenses directly associated to the project as follows:
- Salary, but not own salary for main or co-applicants.
Direct project costs, including materials, consumables, and purchase of services.
Equipment, provided it is essential for the proposed project, and its use after completion of the
project, can be clearly justified.
Scientific publications originating in the project.
Expenses to workshops, meetings, exchange, seminars, and other efforts directed at ensuring
fruitful synergy between the partners of the program.
Travelling, accommodation and registration for scientific conferences.
- Up to 5% of and included in, the total budget, to cover administrative fees connected to the
project. No other indirect overhead expenses are covered by the programme.

Hallas Møller stipendium
The Hallas-Møller Investigator award is given to a scientist who has established an independent research
profile primarily within the fields of clinical or basic biomedical research. The award enables the scientist
to establish or expand her/his own research group in DK.
- The award is granted for 2½ years, with possibility of extending it for further 2½ years.
- Max 2.2 mio. DKK/year, for a total of max 11 mio.DKK. Up to 2 Hallas-Møller Investigator awards
per year.
- Eligible costs: salary, operating expenses directly related to the project.
Deadline phase 1 application: 10 January 2017. Decision announcements: 9 February 2017
Deadline phase 2 application: 2 March 2017. Interview 17 March 2017

NNF Young Investigator Award
NNF Young Investigator Awards are for outstanding younger scientists to come to Denmark to expand their
groundbreaking research programs. The goal is to support independent early- to mid-career researchers
who are ready to conduct larger and more ambitious studies within biomedicine and biotechnology.
- The researcher may apply for a grant of up to DKK 20 million (EUR ~2.7 million, USD ~3.4 million)
for a period of 7 years.
- Funding may be utilized for:
- Salaries, including for the grant recipient
- Direct project costs, including materials/consumables and purchase of services
- Equipment costs
- Travel costs, including for conferences and project-related work
- Publication costs

Postdoc Fellowships for Research abroad
The fellowship offers an opportunity to carry out a research project where a minimum of 3 years are
dedicated to work at a university, hospital or other research institution abroad, followed by up to 1 year at
a university, hospital or other research institution in Denmark
The candidate must have obtained a PhD degree or similar qualifications within 5 years of the

Funding can be requested for:
Salary for the applicant, including pension.
Running costs of the research, including consumables, conference fees, services and
publication costs.
Expenses related to traveling and relocation and other personal expenses.

Visiting Scholar Fellowships at Stanford Bio-X
The fellowship offers an opportunity to carry out a research project where 3 years are dedicated to work at
Stanford University, under the Stanford Bio-X Institute (https://biox.stanford.edu), followed by up to 1 year
at a university or other public or non-profit research institution in Denmark.
Requirements:
a PhD degree within 3 years of the fellowship start date.
a solid education and experience with biomedicine and/or biotechnology, and a deep interest in
interdisciplinary research.
enrollment at a Danish university or other public or non-profit research institution (that will also
administrate the grant) throughout the course of the fellowship program.
Funding:
The duration of the fellowship is 4 years.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation will award up to DKK 1 million per year, for a total of DKK 4 million
per fellowship.

ERC Consolidator Grant
ERC Consolidator Grants are designed to back up researchers who want to establish their research teams
and continue developing a successful career in Europe. The scheme also strengthens independent and
excellent new individual research teams that have been recently created.

scientific track record showing scientific talent and an excellent research proposal
