LAST DAY OF
SPRING TERM
On Friday 20th January, the school celebrated the unveiling of a fantastic,
new storytelling chair. The chair was bought partly with the money left to
the school by former teacher and famous author Gene Kemp and partly by
the money raised by FOSSS.
We were joined to celebrate the life of Gene Kemp by Gene’s daughter
Chantel and her granddaughter Buffy. Mrs Mackney worked with some
children from across the school who read an extract from Gene’s famous
book The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler.
The story telling chair is currently in
the library but will have a
permanent place in the school – we
are looking to develop an
‘Enchanted Storytelling Wood’!
Watch this space for updates! For
the full story, visit the Express &
Echo website.
LEARNING DROP-INS NEXT WEEK
Next week, there will be an opportunity for parents
and carers to view their children’s learning by
attending drop-in sessions.
Nursery and Reception – Weds 8th Feb, 1:15pm – 3:30pm

PADDLEBOAT THEATRE COMPANY VISIT
On Tuesday 31st January, the amazing Paddleboat
Theatre Company visited St Sidwell’s to work with our
Year 1 and Year 2 classes. The children took part in a
workshop in the morning, focusing on their topics for this term. In the afternoon,
Paddleboat performed their fantastic show According to Arthur to the whole
school. Many, many thanks to FOSSS for subsidising this day – it was truly enjoyed
by all!

ATHLETICS AWARD WINNERS!
Thank you!
Two children in year six have won an
award from an athletics club they go to
(South West Road Runners). They
competed in a pentathlon which
included hurdles, long distance, long
jump, high jump, shot-put and an extra
challenge of sprints. Drew won 2nd
place in the male under 12s and Elena
won 1st place in the female under 12s,
well done to them!
A huge thank you to Dave Wickham
(dad of Stanley, Year 1) who gave up
his own time to come and film the
children on Wednesday 1st February.
The finished film will be able to be
viewed once our new website has
been launched.
MAGIC MAJORETTE!
Congratulations to Rhiana in Year 5, who has been
awarded the Attendance Award trophy from her
majorettes group - she hasn't missed one training
session. This trophy has been awarded since 1990 and
amazingly, Miss Gibbins, who is Shania and Bryony's
mum, was awarded this trophy 3 years in a row. A
massive well done to Rhiana - great dedication shown!
VALUES EXERCISE
Thank you to the parents, carers and
children that engaged in the values
exercise… we had over 120 responses
from a wide range of age groups and
faiths. As a school, we are currently
looking into the value of friendship and
reflecting what it means to us.
Over the coming weeks, we will be
exploring the values of trust, hope,
peace and forgiveness.
PROPOSED ROAD CLOSURE OF PARIS STREET
Proposals are in place to permanently close Paris Street to traffic. This will result in many negative effects for
St Sidwell’s school. The school is writing an objection letter to the Secretary of State today outlining our
concerns…
 an increase in traffic around the top of York Road and at the junction with King William Street which is
adjacent to the top school gate
 a reduced area of pavement where children and parents congregate before and after school, right next to
a junction with increased traffic use
 a likely increase in congestion and slow moving traffic on York Road and other roads on the proposed
'through route' as a result of additional traffic using this route and increased congestion particularly at
peak times
 a potential increase of traffic on other local roads in the school’s vicinity - Well Street in particular, as
people look for quicker routes through this area and try to avoid congestion
 an increase in air pollution around the school grounds and playground
Councillor Percy Prowse is against the proposals and has encouraged all those opposing the order to object it.
If you would like to object the proposals, please do so in writing, to the Secretary of State at
[email protected] or The Secretary of State, National Transport Casework Team, Tyneside
House, Skinnerburn Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 7AR stating the reference NATTRAN/SW/S249/2636 by
the 23rd of February.
Here are some opportunities for half term…
Don’t forget St Sidwell’s Fun Club will be running from
Monday – Thursday of half term, 7:45am – 5:45pm.
We will also be running whole day sessions on the 2
INSET days, Friday 10th Feb and Monday 20th Feb.
Please contact the office to book in!
NOTICES
CAKE SALE - £136 RAISED!
Thanks all for your gorgeous baking creations for the
cake sale – it raised £136 for FOSSS, and the cakes
were delicious!
VALENTINE’S DISCO – POSTPONED
Unfortunately we have had to cancel the Valentine’s Disco. There will be another disco soon after half term
so keep your eyes out for the posters for the date.
Disco tickets will be £2 which includes soft drinks for the children. This year, fun finger lights will be available
for the children to buy at the disco, 50p each, maximum of 2 per child. So if your child brings along £1 to the
disco they will be able to have light up fingers which all adds to the fun!
A DAY AT THE RACES?!
FOSSS has been kindly donated a voucher for 2 Premier tickets to Exeter Racecourse!
We can’t wait until the summer fair to auction it so we are putting it up for auction now. The tickets are for
any races for the 2017 season which has its next meet on Sunday 12 th February and the last meet on 9th May,
which is Ladies Night. If you would like to win these tickets please let the office know your bid - highest bid
will win! Winner announced on Tuesday 7th February, in time for the first meet.

donated a huge lot of goodies to the school – from
small notebooks, calculators, diaries to maps. Some
of these have been passed to classes for use and
some have been on sale in the office at bargain

are still a few things left!
