ANSWERS:
Part A: Short Answer: Instructions: Answer the questions below.
1. Why did the Republicans run Garfield and
Arthur on the same ticket in 1880?
In this era, the nation was divided concerning
Patronage. Some felt the system was fine and
others wanted reform. Garfield was a
Reformer and would draw the reformers to the
voting booth. Arthur was a Stalwart and would
draw the supporters of patronage to the voting
booth. The Republicans deliberately wanted
these two men to ensure the divide over the
issue of Patronage would not impact their
candidate’s pursuit of the presidency.
2. Why did Charles Guiteau assassinate President
Garfield?
Guiteau killed Garfield because he was a Stalwart
and Garfield was a Reformer. He wanted a job in
the Garfield administration and was refused. His
goal was to allow Arthur to be president to keep
the Stalwarts in power. However, Arthur changed
his mind on the issue and became a Reformer.
3. What is a tariff? Why arguments could one give in
support of tariffs? What arguments could one give
against tariffs?
A tariff is a tax on imports. Some in favor of tariffs
argued that the tax protected American
businesses from foreign competition. Some
against tariffs argued that, if they were removed,
competition would keep prices cheaper from
consumers.
