Personalized Door Hanger Welcome guests (or warn them away!) with a door hanger that reflects your personal style. Materials ● ● ● ● ● ● Two or more favorite photos One piece of card stock, cut into a rectangle 5 inches by 11 inches Alphabet stickers and other fun stickers Glue Clear packing tape, 2 inches wide, or stick-on laminating film Scissors How to make your Personalized Door Hanger 1. Trace a circle (about 2 inches in diameter) at the top of the card-stock rectangle, about 1 inch from the short end of the rectangle. 2. Cut out the circle by first slicing into the long edge of the rectangle, then cutting carefully around the traced line. 3. Lay out your photos and stickers to decorate your door hanger. Remember, you can cut your photos into fun shapes and overlap them like a collage. Glue everything in place. 4. Add words with the letter stickers. This is your personal announcement, so have fun with it. For example, “Maid Service Requested,” “Quiet—Teenager Napping,” “No Brothers Allowed,” or “Danger! Enter at Your Own Risk!” 5. For extra durability, cover the entire door hanger with clear packing tape or stick-on laminating film. Picture Placemats These unique placemats can be used in so many ways. Make one to remember a special vacation. Design one as a gift for a best friend. Or create a set for Grandma and Grandpa. The possibilities are endless! Materials ● ● ● ● ● ● ● About 12 photos per placemat Poster board or heavyweight craft paper (12 inches by 18 inches) Alphabet stickers or other fun stickers Decoupage glaze or stick-on laminating film and craft glue Colored PVC (electrical) tape Scissors Paintbrush for glaze How to make your Picture Placemat 1. Lay out your photos on the paper, cropping and rearranging until you’re happy with the look of your placemat. 2. Coat the back of each picture with adhesive and glue it to the placemat. Smooth each photo to avoid bumps. Let dry. 3. Add stickers or paper shapes with decoupage glaze or glue. 4. Coat the front of the placemat with decoupage glaze to seal the photos in place (or cover it with laminating film). For extra durability, cover the back of the placemat, too. 5. Add a decorative border using colored PVC tape. Fold it over the edge to seal the photos and paper together. Shopping for Materials Decoupage glaze is available at craft stores. It’s a thick, white adhesive that acts as both a glue and a sealant. Colored PVC tape is available at hardware stores. You could substitute standard black electrical tape or colored duct tape if you prefer. Family Tree This is a great project to make as a decoration for the next family reunion or milestone birthday party. It’s also a wonderful way to learn about your family’s history. Materials ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Photos of your family members* Assorted colored card stock Ribbon in coordinating colors A branch, potted tree, poster board, or other item to display your photo leaves Scissors Hole punch Real leaves or downloadable leaf template from Kodak.com *You might want to make copies of old family photos rather than use the original photographs for this project. (You can do that at a KODAK Picture Kiosk.) How to make your Family Tree 1. Do a little research first to identify members of your family going back to your great-grandparents or even earlier! 2. Ask family members to help you find snapshots of each family member. 3. Create the leaves for your display by tracing a real leaf onto card stock, or use the family tree template available at Kodak.com/go/familytree. Cut out your leaves, one per family member. 4. Carefully write the name and birth and death dates (if applicable) of each family member onto a leaf, one per person. 5. Cut the photos into ovals to fit on the leaves. Punch a hole at the top of each leaf. 6. Thread a piece of ribbon through each leaf and tie into a loop. 7. Hang the photo leaves on a branch or tree, or arrange them on a poster board for display. Make a Face Like Pablo Picasso Using extra family photographs, you can make a collage of crazy faces similar to the style of famous painter Pablo Picasso. Add a magnet to the back and display your masterpiece on the refrigerator. Materials ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Several family photos with faces showing White foam core, precut into a rectangle 2 inches by 3 inches Assorted thin markers, including black Thick craft glue Decoupage glaze Magnet strip, 2 inches long Scissors Paintbrush for the decoupage glaze How to make your Pablo Picasso Face 1. Sign and date the back of your foam-core base. 2. Look over your family photos and pick out several good “face” shots—anybody, any size photos. Cut each face apart so that each little piece has one facial feature. 3. Plan your collage by arranging the pieces on the front of the foam core to make several abstract faces, in the Cubist style of Pablo Picasso. Carefully remove the pieces, but keep your design in mind. 4. Use the markers to add body parts, color the background, and fill in other details on the foam core. 5. Glue the face pieces onto the foam core, allowing some of the coloring to show. 6. Cover the whole collage with a coating of decoupage glaze to seal the photos and make your masterpiece shiny. Let dry. 7. Glue the magnet to the back of the collage. Printmaking Plate In this project, you’ll make your own printing plate that you can use over and over to produce stationery, note cards, or just pretty pictures. Materials ● ● ● ● ● Polystyrene tray or disposable foam plate Craft paint Construction paper, cut to fit tray 1-inch foam craft brush Dull pencil How to make your Printmaking Plate 1. Using the dull tip of the pencil, impress your design into the surface of the foam tray, being careful not to poke all the way through the foam. 2. Cover the design with a thin coat of craft paint. You don’t want puddles of paint, so spread it evenly over the design. 3. Lay a piece of construction paper on the painted surface. 4. Firmly rub all over the paper, to transfer the paint to the paper. 5. Peel off the paper and admire your print. 6. You can repeat several times! NOTE: If you want to print words, you must write backward on the foam tray.
