4.7C Resources BY MR. CRAMER Student Expectations You are expected to identify and classify Earth’s renewable resources, including air, plants, water, and animals; and nonrenewable resources, including coal, oil, and natural gas; and the importance of conservation. Important Ideas 1. Renewable resources include air, plants, water, and animals, which are generally replaceable within a lifetime. 2. Nonrenewable resources include coal, oil, and natural gas, which cannot be replaced within a lifetime. 3. We should make responsible decisions to conserve both renewable and nonrenewable resources. Vocabulary Renewable Resources: air, plants, water, animals Non-Renewable Resources: Fossil Fuels: coal, oil, natural gas Conservation Exhausted Renewable Resources Renewable Resources are resources that can be replaced within a lifetime. These are replaced by nature, again and again. Renewable Resources Wind or air is a renewable resource. We breathe air and use the wind to create energy. Renewable Resource Trees and plants are a renewable resource. Many things eat plants and we can make fuel from corn. Renewable Resources Water is a renewable resource and is necessary for life. We can use water to create electricity. Renewable Resources Animals are renewable resources. We eat animals for energy. Conservation Conservation is to protect resources and avoid wasteful and destructive use. Exhausted Exhausted is when a resource is completely used up. Non-Renewable Resource A non-renewable resource cannot be replaced within a lifetime. It usually takes millions of years to form. Non-Renewable Resources-Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources formed from the decayed remains of ancient plants and animals. Non Renewable Resource-Coal Coal is a fossil fuel created from decayed plant and animal matter. Coal is used to power electrical power plants. Formation of Coal Non Renewable Resource Oil, also known as petroleum, is a non-renewable resource found underground, that is mainly used to make gasoline for cars. Non-Renewable Resource Natural Gas is a non-renewable resource, that is a burnable gas found underground, and used as fuel. Formation of Oil and Natural Gas Natural Gas is less dense than oil so it settles on top of oil. U.S.A. Energy Consumption by Source Questions 1. What are renewable resources and what makes them renewable? 2. What are nonrenewable resources and what makes them nonrenewable? 3. What are responsible decisions concerning the conservation of renewable and nonrenewable resources?
