This year, PTO chose to give back to our community through the Friday Friends program at the Johnston Partnership. Friday Friends packages bags of food to send home with about 80 kids in Johnston every week on Friday. This gives kids a little something to get them through the weekend in homes that do not have food security. Activities sponsored by PTO designed to raise funds and food items included a social/dance at Summit, skating parties at Skate North, and a coin drive competition between the building basecamps. The goal of this year’s CommUNITY Day was for each student in Summit to package one Friday Friends food bag, or a total of 1,050 bags. Students raised a total of $4,819 through the basecamp coin drive competition…an amount that showed an amazing commitment of our students and families to our Summit Nutrition 986-0938 Summit After School (SAS)/Comm Ed. 986-0929 Cheerleading Tryouts (for current 7th Grade students) Mandatory Clinics: 3-5 p.m. on 5/7 & 5/8 - SMS Gym Tryouts: 2:30-5:30 p.m. on 5/13 – SMS Gym (Girls will be assigned a group number at clinics so they will know order of tryouts. Five years ago, middle school teachers Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Irvine began partnering with teachers at Horizon Elementary. Now, once a month, Mrs. Irvine’s and Mrs. Kielhorn’s seventh grade students help Mrs. Moore’s and Mrs. Heikes’ first graders with their academic work in reading, writing, and math. Students enter the room and are greeted with hugs and high fives all around by their buddies. The students help their buddies with writing stories, reading books and finding the key ideas. They also use storytelling kits from Heartland AEA to practice and tell stories to our buddies, incorporating the use of props. During some of the past visits, the buddies worked on the ….computers, illustrating and typing stories. Bradley Vu, a seventh grader said, “One of my favorite memories of hanging out with the buddies was when we read to them or when they read to us.” Seventh grader McKenna Straley said, “I enjoy reading to them because I think it’s fun to teach kids.” The children at Horizon also very much enjoy their buddies. From Mrs. Moore’s class, Ryne Condon said, “My buddy is like a brother to me. He helps me with my work and he laughs.” Zach Johnson said, “My buddy is my neighbor. My mom and dad like her. She keeps me working. I like her too.” First grader Layla Flowers commented, “My buddy listens to me. She is a good writer. She can also read very good.” The buddies will hold their final meeting at Summit Middle School, when the seventh graders will hold a storytelling festival and celebration for their first grade friends.
