The other Mr Darwin
The life of Alfred Russel Wallace
Charles Darwin worked out how animals and plants
change into new types but was afraid to tell the world
until another gentleman worked it out too. Darwin
realised that all his work would be less important if
he did not publicise his discoveries immediately. This
is the story of ‘The other Mr Darwin, Alfred Russel
Wallace’ who was, so nearly, the father of evolution.

The Saxons & Vikings - Gallery 4
The period from 410 to 1066 was traditionally known as
‘the Dark Ages’ as writing became rare and information
was hard to find. In recent years all kinds of research
has shed light on this shadowy period of British history
This long-term exhibition examines the artefacts that
have been found from the Anglo Saxon and Viking age
and suggests new ways of looking at the period.
The artefacts are displayed in an environment which
brings the Dark Ages to life and even includes a replica
of a Viking boat.
The Saxons and Vikings exhibition has been extended
to the start of 2014.
This exhibition is supported by a fully interactive
programme of activities and talks aimed primarily at KS2.
Two educational sessions are currently offered:
Hands on the Saxons
A chance for young visitors to find out some of the ways
in which modern researchers discover about the Saxons
and Vikings. Using language research and archaeology.
Myths and legends
Using drama, this is a chance for young visitors to
understand how our dark age forebears understood the
world in a time before science, technology and, in many
instances, writing.
These sessions are complemented by activity and
handling sessions supervised by your own staff.
Advanced booking is required for all delivered
educational sessions. Contact the main museum
number.
