The 5 Marketing Sins! By Joy Balma THE 5 MARKETING SINS 1. UNCLEAR about who you are taking to You are unclear about “who you are,” “what you do” & “who you serve.” It takes time to explore these questions, and you haven’t done it. Your marketing message isn’t talking to anyone in particular. RESULT? They tune you out! 2. , uhum, BORING You're always saying the exact same thing in the exact same exact way! This makes your message (invitation) flat and snooze boring. You are failing to interest your ideal client even if they need what you offer. RESULT? They tune you out. 3. Your MESSAGE is not You talk about “YOU” 95% of the time and their needs 5% of the time. RESULT? They tune you out! 1 4. You have a The “My life totally rocks” marketing message is a tricky one because it can alienate your ideal clients. No one likes a Polly perfect pants. Be a real person. However, DO NOT make your platform solely about your challenges in life because then you’re a downer Debbie. People have their own challenges. RESULT: They tune you out. 5. OVERHWHELMING them The fastest way to get people to tune you out is if you throw the kitchen sink at them. Don’t ask people to read too much! Keep in mind that people don’t have time- really they don’t! If your call to action is confusing, convoluted and asks them to read too much, they give up and tune you out. And, the next time they see your message, they tune you out even before they read it. You become invisible! 2 What to do Know, understand and communicate clearly WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO & WHO YOU SERVE. Otherwise you are just spitting in the wind. Yicks! Make your message exciting and interesting. Talk about it from different angles each time. Use many different mediums for your message so you don’t bore them. Make your message EASY to UNDERSTAND and easy to act upon with just one “call to action.” Be RELATABLE. Strike the balance between sharing your real life (because being “real” is interesting) and being an inspiration to them and offering solutions for them. Create marketing messages that are ABOUT YOUR IDEAL CLIENT, so they know what is in it FOR THEM! 3 THE KEY excite invite Excite delight Invite Look at every message you send out. Make sure it isn’t committing ANY of the 5 marketing sins listed above. Make sure it excites, invites and delights your ideal client to want MORE from you! Make sure it addresses what they need and want.
