Tucson; Mexico Thursday 1. It shows the location of the Southwest in relation to the rest of the country. 2. 6 Friday 1. legend 2. Arizona Challenge Students should show a map of the Southwest region with Texas highlighted. 6 Share with students that as they read a map, they should notice the different elements that are shown. The first element is the title, which tells readers what the map is about. Other common elements include a legend, or key, and a compass rose. Define these elements for the students. Have students look at the map of the Southwest region of the U.S. Ask students to locate and describe the title, the legend, and the compass rose. Point out that this compass rose includes both cardinal and intermediate directions. Discuss the definitions of cardinal and intermediate directions. Students should also notice that this map contains another element— an inset map. Discuss what an inset map is and what it shows. You may choose to share with students that as they work with other maps in this book, they will encounter additional elements such as a scale, coordinates, and an index. Introducing Vocabulary cardinal directions compass rose inset map north, south, east, and west (N, S, E, and W) a symbol that shows directions on a map a smaller map set within the border of a larger one northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest (NE, SE, SW, and NW) intermediate directions legend (key) a list that explains the symbols on a map 1 Name WEEK 1 D V A Title UTAH N E COLORAD MISSOURI A Parts of a Map O KANSAS OR Oklahoma City Albuquerque Phoenix OKLAHOMA CA LIF Tulsa ARKANSAS NI A Santa Fe ARIZONA NEW MEXICO Tucson Dallas LOUISI M TEXAS IC ANA EX Austin O Inset Map G U LF OF ME XIC O Compass Rose Legend state capital state border city international border Draw an inset map that shows just the location of Texas within the Southwest region. 7 Name ___________________________________________________ Parts of a Map WEEK 1 Monday 1. Which four important parts are labeled on the map? __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ 2. According to the title, what is the map showing? __________________________________________________________ Tuesday 1. What is another name for the four main directions on a compass rose? __________________________________________________________ 2. Name the intermediate directions on the compass rose. __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Wednesday 1. What does the legend show on the map? __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ 2. Name the city that is closest to an international border. What country does this city border? __________________________________________________________ 8 Name ___________________________________________________ Parts of a Map WEEK 1 # Thursday 1. Why is the Southwest region highlighted on the inset map? __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ 2. How many regions of the U.S. are shown on the inset map? __________________________________________________________ Friday 1. If deserts were added to the map, would the symbol be shown on a compass rose, an inset map, or on a legend? __________________________________________________________ 2. Which state is the farthest west in the Southwest region? __________________________________________________________ Challenge Sometimes there is a need for two inset maps. In the space provided on the map, make another inset map that shows only the location of Texas within the Southwest region. 9 Skill: Basic Elements Essential Element 1 WEEK 2 Globe Lines Introducing the Globes ANSWER KEY Monday 1. Globes accurately show sizes, locations, and distances on the Earth because the Earth, like a globe, is a sphere. Maps are not able to accurately show the round Earth. 2. axis Tuesday 1. equator 2. 0° latitude Explain to students that a globe is a more accurate way to show the Earth, since Earth is shaped like a sphere. Show the classroom globe to students. Talk about how the Earth rotates on an imaginary line called an axis. The Earth rotates, or turns, on its axis once a day. Also define and discuss the other two important imaginary lines: the equator and the prime meridian. Explain that the equator divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and that the prime meridian divides the Earth into the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. Show students the pictures of the globes and read the captions before proceeding with the week’s lessons. Introducing Vocabulary an imaginary line that passes through the center of Earth between the North and South Poles on which Earth rotates axis an imaginary line that runs around the center of Earth, halfway between the North and South Poles at 0° latitude equator Wednesday 1. an imaginary line at 0° longitude 2. Eastern and Western Hemispheres Thursday 1. North Pole 2. South Pole Friday 1. equator 2. surface temperature gets colder Challenge North Pole: the point on the Earth located at 90° north latitude, where the lines of longitude meet South Pole: the point on Earth located at 90° south latitude, where the lines of longitude meet Students should label the North Pole 90°N and the South Pole 90°S on all three globes. 10 hemisphere half of the Earth the point north on Earth where the lines of longitude meet (90°N latitude) North Pole an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole at 0° longitude prime meridian the point south on Earth where the lines of longitude meet (90°S latitude) South Pole 1 Name WEEK 2 Globe Lines North Pole South Pole A globe shows how the Earth rotates on an imaginary center line called an axis. North Pole North Pole Western Hemisphere equator prime meridian Northern Hemisphere Eastern Hemisphere Southern Hemisphere South Pole A globe shows an imaginary line called the equator. The equator runs around the center of Earth. The equator is located at 0° latitude. The equator divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. South Pole A globe shows an imaginary line called the prime meridian. The prime meridian runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. The prime meridian is located at 0° longitude. The prime meridian helps to create the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. 11 Name ___________________________________________________ Globe Lines WEEK 2 Monday 1. Why is a globe more accurate than a flat map to represent Earth’s surface? __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ 2. What is the name of the imaginary line on which the Earth rotates? __________________________________________________________ Tuesday 1. What is the name of the imaginary line that divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres? __________________________________________________________ 2. Is the equator located at 0° longitude, 0° latitude, or 180° longitude? __________________________________________________________ Wednesday 1. What is the prime meridian? __________________________________________________________ 2. The prime meridian helps create which two hemispheres? __________________________________________________________ 12 Name ___________________________________________________ Globe Lines WEEK 2 Thursday 1. Name the northernmost point of Earth’s axis. __________________________________________________________ 2. Name the southernmost point of Earth’s axis. __________________________________________________________ Friday 1. Which imaginary line—the equator or prime meridian—runs all the way around the Earth? __________________________________________________________ 2. What happens to Earth’s surface temperature as you travel farther away from the equator? __________________________________________________________ Challenge What is the location of the North Pole and South Pole? Label the North Pole and South Pole in degrees on all three globes. Use a reference globe to help you. 13
