A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Aligning Stewardship
with Strategy
Looking back at my first year as
Chairman of the Board of Directors,
I am thrilled at what United
Church Homes has been able to
accomplish and excited about a
future that looks quite promising.
The organization’s accomplishments
in 2014, as specified in Rev. Kenneth
Daniel’s CEO column on pages 12-13,
are leading indicators of the board’s
confidence in our capacity to translate
strategy into action. This roster of
achievements was simply not possible
a few years ago — we could not have
delivered such impressive results
at that time. That they now stand
completed reflects the organization’s
transformation, including management
and governance, over the past four
years to move beyond day-to-day
concerns and consider broader issues
of effective governance. Instead
of focusing on the short-term and
the routine, we’re now addressing
long-term issues with far-reaching
impact for strategic growth.
In making this transformation, the
board is connecting our rich history of
the past century with the legacy that
we will leave for future generations.
We are aligning stewardship with
strategy. Our goal is to increase our
service offerings for independent
and assisted living and enter new
markets to serve more people.

This concept was illustrated many
times during the past year. For example,
consider our newly minted VisionMission-Values that are featured
on pages 2–5 in this issue of Spirit.
Personally, I felt privileged to be part
of the process. The assignment was
ambitious, knowing that we were
about to set a new course. Members
of the Board of Directors, staff and
residents were searching for common
ground in uncharted waters.

During the process an amazing scenario
transpired. We were all asked to
describe a situation when we knew
the hand of God was guiding the
ministry of United Church Homes. The
stories that we shared were powerful
and passion-filled. They evoked
emotional, heart-felt responses. The
group quickly focused on the big ideas
of “abundant life” and “transforming
aging.” The unifying themes and
core values soon became evident
after intense, stimulating discussion.
We could feel the Spirit at work.
Our new Vision-Mission-Values are a
critical step for United Church Homes,
one that will serve as both an anchor
and a springboard as we move ahead.
It’s an anchor in that these ideas
will shape future deliberations. It’s a
springboard in that we are inspired to
weigh the risks and rewards of creating
abundance and being agents for
transformation. It’s no longer enough
to accept anything less. We aspire to
do so much more for those in our care.
The board has been working diligently
to be more forward-thinking, and create
a culture where strategic thinking
abounds. Our progress in this direction
was evident in 2014, when bold steps
were presented and decisive actions
were taken. With a future that’s full
of potential, the board is prepared to
connect the strategic opportunities
that arise to grow our ministry.
The promise of United Church
Homes is only limited by our ability
to look to the future with hope.
I am confident that we continue to
feel the hand of God still sustaining
this nearly century-old ministry.

A YEAR-END REFLECTION FROM THE CEO
Strategic Focus Yields
Transformation
The year 2014 will be remembered as a
time when United Church Homes made
the transition from ideas to ideal. By
focusing efforts on a few critical ideas,
we took a more strategic approach that
has positioned the organization to widen,
deepen and strengthen our impact on
people’s lives. We witnessed material
progress in several key areas, progress
that has enabled us to set even loftier
expectations. Initiatives that we used to
imagine could one day be considered are
now occurring on a consistent basis.
Our focus has yielded transformation,
both in terms of improved performance
and greater clarity. We are acting
with deliberate, specific intent.
Last year we achieved many major
objectives we had established as
priorities for the organization — quality
improvement, net revenue growth, provider
affiliations, capital rationalization and
advancement. Each area included action
items we used to monitor and measure
progress toward our larger goals.

United Church Homes has long sustained
an excellent track record of providing
quality care and services, and we added
to that reputation in 2014. At year end, all
of our healthcare communities achieved
at least four stars in the quality domain

of the CMS 5-Star Quality system, while
Patriot Ridge and Trinity achieved top tier
recognition from the American Health
Care Association for their efforts with
four key national quality improvement
benchmarks. These achievements are
the byproduct of cultivating a culture
that consistently emphasizes quality
as an organizational imperative.
In addition to being recognized for quality
initiatives by national organizations, we
also enhanced our customer satisfaction
processes in both our Housing division and
Fast Track Rehab units, and continued finetuning in areas such as medical direction,
staffing models, dining service, recruitment
and personnel performance appraisals.
Our capabilities to generate resources and
sustain growth also improved significantly
last year, as demonstrated by increased
utilization and a substantive shift toward
post-acute care in many of our settings.
We launched a more comprehensive
program for medical direction improving
our quality results and rehab patient
satisfaction. The UCH brand management
program began to present an integrated
and unified approach, as can be seen
in each issue of Spirit magazine, our
redesigned website (unitedchurchhomes.
org), and in hundreds of other materials.
Finally, we secured a major new
management service contract with
Friendship Village of Columbus, adding
more than 300 residents to the UCH family.
In the fast-evolving Ohio healthcare
environment, United Church Homes was
able to cultivate ongoing affiliations with
major Accountable Care Organization/
Managed Care Organization entities in the
Dayton, Akron and Sandusky markets. We
anticipate these hospital/health system
relationships will enable us to compete
more effectively as healthcare reform
moves rapidly from concept to reality.
United Church Homes enjoyed an
exceptional year in the area of capital
improvements. Among the many
achievements that occurred last year were
the development of a multiyear capital
plan for both Housing and Healthcare
communities, and the development
of strategic campus master plans for
Chapel Hill, Trinity and Parkvue. We
also adopted a disciplined, systematic
approach to identify and evaluate potential
affiliation opportunities. Today we stand
on the verge of realizing the first fruits
of our new approach, and are confident
that more opportunities will follow.
It seems that everywhere one looks, there’s
evidence of our ability and willingness
to make capital investments. At year
end, there were major capital projects
underway at Fairhaven and Parkvue, with
another on the horizon for Trinity. We also
built 12 new Kroft Commons cottages at
Chapel Hill, and filled them all by the end
of the year. The additional independent
living residents at Chapel Hill was a
critical factor in our decision to renovate
and expand Basler Community Center, a
project that will be completed in mid-2015.

United Church Homes is prepared to
build on this foundation and expand our
ministry. It is an ambitious goal, to be both
responsive and responsible. With focused
efforts, we can meld the twin constructs
of our new vision and mission, and
transform aging by creating abundant life.
Our advancement initiatives continued
to show promise in growing awareness,
friends and funds. We exceeded our fundraising target by 40 percent, and enhanced
our donor outreach program by hosting
events that were attended by nearly 700
of our friends and supporters. We initiated
formal relationships with multiple colleges
and universities, providing internships
and other educational opportunities
for capable students interested in
serving in the nonprofit sector.
As a faith-based ministry, we took
major steps to augment and enhance
our church and community relations.
We introduced a new CHALICE Partner
Program for our supporting congregations
and pastors, brought Clinical Pastoral
Education (CPE) to our residents (see
page 10), and now feature full-time
chaplains at every healthcare community.
