SPORTS ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR In 1984 MUSR instituted the award of Sports Administrator of the Year. The award is presented to a leading Club Administrator for service over and above that normally expected. The Cricket Club members to receive this award are: 1985 Allan Mahoney 1996 David Webb 1997 David Folkard BRIAN SPENCER AWARD This award is given in recognition of outstanding service to a club and/or to MUSR by an individual on or off the field. 2001 Allan Mahoney 2003 Warrick Folkard ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD The Rookie of the Year acknowledges the efforts of a student in their first year of involvement in a sporting club. In 2002 Peter Procopis became the first member of the Cricket Club to win this award. UNIVERSITY BLUES The University awards blues to sportsmen and women for outstanding sporting achievements. Performance standards are set by the Clubs and approved by the University Blues Committee. For Cricket, a Full Blue requires State representation whilst a Half Blue requires either 500 runs or 50 wickets in the Club's highest team. Current student status is also necessary. These included: • Continuing to improve in the Shires Club Championship. After finishing a poor 12th a mere 3 season ago, 2006/07 saw us end the season in 5th spot- a terrific result which reflects the great efforts of all MUCC members • The Sydney Masters remarkable season, crowned as the undefeated Sydney Masters Premiers • 4th Grade’s ‘all but’ season…undefeated until the Final, then missing out on a well deserved Premiership by a mere 16 runs • 3rd and 6th Grade, and the U-24’s, who all played finals cricket - a reflection of a seasons worth of solid, consistent cricket. Hopefully 2007/08 will see one (or more!) of the Saturday teams take the extra step and bring home a trophy. Individually, congratulations to Tim Hopkins, whose much improved all round game saw him deservedly recognised as most outstanding cricketer in the Club by winning the M.R. Gwilliam Shield. Jason Ford was a very popular winner of the Ivan Blyth Memorial Club Man of the Year- his now world famous ‘Ford Factor articles gaining recognition across the cricket globe, and the Sydney Morning Herald. Congratulations also to Kamruj Milon, whose explosive batting in his first season with MUCC saw our young Bangladeshi student receive the Mahoney-Folkard Rookie of the Year trophy. On another positive, the public face of the Cricket Club- www.mucc.org.au is now widely recognised as the best web site in Shires Cricket- and maybe beyond! The site averages some 200+ unique ‘hits’ per day during the playing season. However, as has unfortunately been the practice over recent years, much of the offseason was spent dealing with matters threatening the very survival of MUCC. The substance of the issue your Committee was faced was first communicated to the Club in the following email from the Chief Executive Officer of Macquarie University Sport and Recreation Inc (MUSR), Ms Deidre Anderson. I thought it would be useful to have this communication documented: From: Deidre Anderson Sent: Monday, 23 April 2007 5:13 PM To: David Smith Subject: Turf Wicket changes Dear David Given the importance of the following information, I would have preferred to meet face to face to discuss, but arranging a convenient meeting may have taken too long and I wanted to get this out to you asap, so that you have time to condense the contents. We have recently completed a review of the operations at the University Sports Fields and in particular how they relate to achieving the objective of 20,000 sport and recreation participants by 2010. Part of the review included the sustainability of the turf cricket wickets. As a result of this review, it has been agreed to maintain the turf pitch on the Northern oval and initiate the following changes in 2007: 1. Removal of turf wicket table from the GWilliam and construction of a synthetic wicket surface 2. Cease the maintenance of the turf wicket table on the University Oval 3. Relocation of the practice wickets (turf & synthetic) from the University Oval to north east corner of the Northern Oval. 4. In 2008, construction of additional amenities, storage and grand stand facility to the northern fields (subject to Ryde council approvals) - 10 - 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report This decision has not been taken lightly and although it will impact on your ability to play in the current level of competition, it is a necessary decision to ensure maximum flexibility and usage of the playing fields for students/alumni and sporting partners. A major issue that has led to this decision is the fact that both the Northern and University ovals are dedicated to the sport of cricket for the entire summer season (Sep-Mar) and during this time, other sports programs cannot play on the fields due to the location and delicate nature of the turf wicket tables. I do not underestimate the impact that this decision will have on your ability to compete in the shires competition and will work with you to identify an alternative venue should you require a second wicket. Deidre Anderson Chief Executive Officer Macquarie University Sport and Recreation Inc. Effectively, and with no prior communication or consultation with MUCC, MUSR were now only guaranteeing the Cricket Club one ground for Season 2007/08 – obviously severely threatening our capability to continue in the Shires competition, as well as our ability to effectively support 8 cricket teams and 100+ active members. It is not my purpose to go into the details of the actions taken to try and preserve cricket at Macquarie University- except to say that through the hard work of your Executive and other concerned members, some ‘give and take’ from MUSR, and the strong support provided via the formation of a new Alliance with Gordon District Cricket Club, competitive cricket was secured at Macquarie University for the upcoming season- and hopefully well beyond. Although we no longer have access to University Oval, MUCC will go into season 2007/08 with MUSR providing the Club with both the Northern and Gwilliam Ovals. It will be the task of future committees to yet again start the process of establishing a true working relationship with MUSR, whereby the benefits of proactively supporting a Cricket Club which provides an avenue for Macquarie University Students, Alumni, and others a place to play truly ‘competitive’ cricket (as exists in most esteemed Universities across the Cricketing globe) are better understood by its administration. On a personal note, I would like to express my appreciation for the efforts of the Committee and Captains throughout the season. There is much work done week in and week out to ensure we have 8 teams on the field every weekend, and the club owes much to the work done by these few members. As well, I would in particular like to single out Paul Chapman, Warren Montford, Mark Schaafsma and Danny McVey who were of great support during our recent efforts with MUSR. In his last year in the role before touring overseas, Steve Rose continued to ensure the ongoing financial strength and viability of the Cricket Club as its Treasurer. Paul Chapman, in his final season as Secretary, worked very hard right throughout a challenging season, where his legal expertise and passion for MUCC were of invaluable support. As well, the efforts of both Mark Hughes and Jason Ford via their web site contributions (The ‘Shires Squirrel’, ‘The Ford Factor’, and the detailed Competition Tables) are much appreciated by all members. Finally, on behalf of MUCC, our thanks go out to Paul Stephenson and the Gordon District Cricket Club committee, whose timely support via the new Alliance between our clubs did much to help secure our immediate cricketing future. David Smith President - 11 - 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report SECRETARY’S REPORT Note from MUCC Committee: Our Secretary for 2006/07, Paul Chapman, wrote a very heartfelt and passionate secretary’s report whilst the very future of the cricket club was in limbo during the offseason. The Cricket Club understand and support his sentiments but with much respect, believe it was inappropriate to publish this perspectives in this Annual Report. This is largely due to the fact that much has happened between the time Paul’s report was written and the current publishing date, with many of the central issues discussed no longer relevant in terms of the Cricket Club moving forward with its relationship with MUSR. As discussed in the Presidents Report, we can state with great pleasure that Macquarie is now in charge of its own destiny largely through the help and understanding shown by our Alliance partners Gordon District Cricket Club. We also have a new understanding and relationship with MUSR (our former parent body) which is service based and which we hope will see the Cricket Club continue to operate in its current form for many, many seasons to come. …in any event, the club’s future seems secure for now, thanks to the efforts of the Committee and other passionate MUCC members. The club needs committed individuals who are prepared to put the past behind them in order to make this new phase in the club’s history a success. I wish them all the best for the future. However we were realistically booking our early end of season trip after round 4. Two of the closest possible losses in Rounds 1 and 2 (Lane Cove- 1 wicket; Warringah- 1 run), followed by a draw against lowly Georges River, and then a humiliating defeat by Pennant Hills meant our season was effectively over before it had even begun. A solid win against a strong Briars side followed. However the sweet taste of victory was short lived by losing the next game to Roseville. Southern Districts followed and by defeating the worst team in the competition outright we finished the 2006 with 16 points. Christmas came and then went and by the looks of things we might as well have gone back to the North Pole with Santa as we were thumped by South Sydney. Epping were next to visit Club Mac, but it was a very short one, with the ‘Pingas bowled out for 43 and so a very convincing 6 points to MUCC. Unfortunately, we were never able to string back to back wins, and the trend continued by being defeated in the next two games by Auburn and Strathfield. With two games remaining and only 3 wins to cheer home about, the season could only be described as extremely disappointing. The goal was to win the last two and hopefully kick start season 2007/08 and that is exactly what we did. Two solid victories against North West Sydney and Lindfield meant the season finished strongly for us. Nevertheless. with no finals glory to talk about it was a season to forget. However, I believe with so much talent in the side it will be only a matter of time before the MUCC First XI becomes a force to be reckoned with. Oh how nice it would be to be undefeated at Christmas next year! Tim Hopkins Now a few words on the 1st Grade mainstays for 06/07: Steve Moran Poor old Steve couldn’t by a run to save his life, with only 34 runs from 6 digs it was back to the bowling machine to get some practice. We all know Steve has the ability to score a lot of runs in first grade, it is important to sometimes not think so hard about how you are batting and just go out into the middle with an open mind. Seamus Ross A natural gifted played, who can bat, bowl and field. Seamus is a very useful player to the team. A 63 against Warringah on a difficult wicket shows the class he can produce. Very handy with the ball, however I’m sure he would like more opportunity. - 15 - 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report Brendan Rounds I’m sure Brendan would have wanted more with the bat this year. A 91 against Auburn showed glimpse of his form from previous seasons. However it was with the ball that Roundsey performed. With an average of 29 and some extremely tight overs, he was never set upon by opposition batsmen. Hopefully with the new eyes he so heavily invested in we can ‘see’ a resurgence from Brendan next year. Brendan Rounds Kieran Mahony Our resident opener finished the season averaging only 15. I would like to think that Kieran would expect more from himself and with being demoted to 7 in the final match should spur him on for next year (or was he demoted due to the captain being greedy and wanted to try and break a batting record?) A solid fielder with good hands polishes off Kierans ability. Louis Hanna There is never a dull day playing cricket with Louisneed I say more!! 27 wickets at 21 and 376 runs at 34 shows that Louis is the complete package. If he could take that stupid late cut out of his game the runs figure would have been well over 500. Louis Hanna Michael Lloyd Another player with enormous talent when he has his mind set. A free flowing strong cricketer with natural aggression, he is, at times, a pleasure to watch. With an average of 22, Michael could well be on the improve for next season. With more opportunity at the top of the order and a better mind set, Lloydey has the ability to make his mark in Shires first grade cricket. Prashant Rai A wonder boy!!! Quick with the ball and even quicker with bat, he is always entertaining to watch. 21 wickets at 17 show just how hard the batsman found Prashant to deal with. With limited opportunity batting at 11 for most of the season, Prashant was still able to show the skipper what he can do with the blade. With the promise from the skipper at batting higher next season I feel it will be show time when Prashant walks onto the field. Prashant Rai Pranish Rai With a flick of the wrist in true Indian style Pranish showed our side many new shots. However with a couple of unlucky lbw's, and always finding new ways to be run out, Pranish only showed us a glimpse of the talent he has. I’m really looking forward in seeing what Pranish can produce next year. - 16 - 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report David Webb Old man Webb!! Not much more can really be said about Webby that someone as not already said over his many distinguished years of service to MUCC. So I would like to take the opportunity in thanking David on a remarkable career and furthermore say that it was a pleasure playing a couple of seasons with him and how I wish I had been around to see the glory days of his career. Well done Webby. David Webb Tim Hopkins This was the season that Tim went from being a player with a lot of potential to actually producing the goods when it counted. It was a remarkable season for Tim- elevated to opening the batting he proved that he has the ability to score runs and see off the opening bowler. With his first 1st Grade half century against Epping, followed by other grinding scores Tim finished the season with 289 runs at 24 which is a fantastic effort from someone that was batting 11 only last year. Moreover, it is still Tim’s bowling that he is picked for. With a 5fa against Southern Districts and a few 4fas, Hoppa finished with 31 wickets at 14- an outstanding effort. Congratulations on winning the Gwilliam Shield, truly well deserved. A special mention must go to the other players that played a part in 2006/07. Smith, Gibson, Morrow, Carter, Tosolini, Montford, Alexander and Payne. Finally, I would especially like to thank Ian Wright for his constant support and his efforts scoring over a long season- your work was greatly appreciated by the entire First Grade squad. Ian Wright, Pranish Rai, Michael Lloyd Now hopefully we can move onwards and upwards into 2007/08. Kris Griffiths-Jones 1st Grade Captain Ed’s Note: The skipper, Kris Griffiths Jones, certainly led from the front this season. Griff equaled the 1st Grade keeping record (33 dismissals), while also falling only 29 runs short of the 1st Grade run aggregate record- not bad when you consider how slow and long the boundaries were at University Oval. Congratulations from the Club on a tremendous season. Having come off one of our least successful seasons ever where we competed but failed to close games out, this year 2’s were a regular threat to the top sides and outside the top 5 teams only lost the one game to Roseville. We had our destiny in our own hands with 3 games to go but unfortunately these were three tough games where we narrowly missed the points against teams that all played in the finals. As a team, we learnt how to win games this year and in a lot of ways were able to dominate games against lower ranked opposition. Unfortunately we still struggled to close out tight games against the top 5 sides and once again it was probably our overall fielding which we regularly fail to train properly for that cost us. So what made this a more successful year for 2nd Grade? Roasty (our MVP) beat the runscoring mark he set the previous season with a terrific tally of 602, and had a much more consistent season with the bat – contributing in almost every innings. Pete Saliba and Linus added some much needed spine to the rest of the batting order and were both regular contributors during the season. We continued to make early inroads with the ball this year, with Warren Montford again leading the charge, with 31 wickets at less than 20. However, it was our ability to finish teams off once we made the breakthroughs that improved dramatically, with Andrew Jessop and Paul Chapman being the standouts with the older ball and provided the variety necessary to take wickets once the pitches flattened out and batting got easy. Glen McFadden Everyone who played for 2’s this year was able to contribute in one way or another and this aspect of our game was very pleasing and led to us winning more games than we lost by season end. There was a core group of regulars which helped maintain continuity throughout the season as well and it is realistic to expect that we should make finals this season with the return of Mick Kelly and Chris Savage and the availability of Paul Mac to help bolster the ranks and improve competition for spots within the team. I’d like to thank everyone who played for 2’s this year and made it an enjoyable season and team to be a part of – particular thanks to Roasty for an improved season as captain, to Linus for his commitment and mature influence on the group, Pete Saliba for being Pete, Chuckles Carter and Andrew Jessop for making the season more enjoyable and JC for being the rock up the other end. A fuller player review can be viewed in the archives at http://www.mucc.org.au/content.aspx?file=1843|14808c Our thanks go to Kym for the afternoon teas, to all the other captains (particularly Griff a Paul Mac) who butted heads regularly at selection time so we could have a more consistent group – our commiserations to Browny for coming oh so close, and to Smithy for all of the work he does for the club. We’ve had a tough couple of years in the background but to all the guys who are MUCC thanks for making it a great club and good luck in the coming season. Still it was a great effort to make it to the second week of finals. It was a new look third grade side this year. The team had a new captain with Greg Brown deciding to do Fourth grade this season. So with Paul McInnes at the helm 3rd Grade set out to try and claim that title. It was a mixed year with some great cricket played and some equally forgettable also played. A season with many new faces to 3rd grade and a few who haven't played 3rd grade for a few seasons as well. The team had a good blend of youth and experience, with this combination bringing out the best in both for most of the season. With the bat the stars were Ross McIntyre who led the charge. His was supported well by John Sutton, Paul Chapman, and Muhilan Sriravindrarajah, who all made centuries during the season. With the ball Jason Tabrett stepped up into to his role of opening and his first season of 3rd grade to take 31 wickets in 10 games. Jason also got himself a pewter with a 6 wicket hall as did Paul Clift who achieved this feat twice throughout the season. In this team we also many players who did the job asked of them and even though they may not scored the most runs or taken the most wickets- their effort was never questioned. The best of the all round performers were David Smith, Mark Hughes, Robbie Walker, Chris Anstiss, Mark Schaafsma and Bruce Taylor. Throughout the season I had the pleasure of captaining many fine cricketer's. It was a pleasure to be part of this team. I wish everyone the best for the future and hope you all come back next season. I would like to thank the committee and all the captains who gave the team terrific support throughout the season. After finishing the regular season undefeated we approached the final series with an expectation of turning up and collecting the silverware – and for this we paid the ultimate price. The Grand Final was a game that will take some getting over. The fact that it is now December, as I write this report, evidence of its impact. Indeed it is only the constant haranguing of my summertime spouse, President Smith, that I have attempted this odious task. It is easy to say that we took our worse game of the year to the grand final. Even easier to blame poor umpiring decisions or the exploitation of the opposition – but we need to look inward to expunge these demons. For the 5th time in as many years we have fallen at the hurdle, loudly remonstrating that we are the best team… if only……. James Howsam and Kam Milon Some people will say that we took the comp too easy and only our top order batsmen got to face the bowling – maybe there is some truth in this as the top 7 batsmen scored over 200 runs each (4 of them over 400) and no one else scored over 100 (indicative of the number of innings they played, not ability). Some will say that the flogging we gave South’s in our round game (Outright in just over a day) lulled us. In the end it comes to this; - we were not good enough on the day – period! The season was a very successful one in terms of personal performance. This was highlighted by the breaking of the 4th grade batting record not once but twice and the setting of an overall wicket partnership for the club. The batting was led from the top by new boy Milon. The term swash buckling was defined for us by Milon. Indeed hundred run opening partnerships would be made with Milon 90 of the hundred. His season tally of 529 runs at 44 was sensational. He took the pressure off the team with the run rate he set unmatchable. David Gracie was the man who finally stood up to collect the tittle of most runs in 4th grade. His season tally of 539 at 54 coming off only 12 innings set the benchmark and new record for highest aggregate in 4th grade. DG is the thinking mans cricketer – always scheming, always keen to offer that out of left field suggestion. This season was one of the best I have seen from David and he always looked in control and never looked like getting out. As always, a pleasure to play with. Chris Hole Our stylist, Steve ‘Phantom’ O’Reilly didn’t have the greatest of season when compared to his previous Everest achievements. In saying that 400 at 37 including 2 centuries would make most people envious. However, once again in the final series Steve continued to be plagued by bad luck and umpiring decisions that really hurt us. As a mark of the man – he never once complained about a poor decision and just turned and walked away – we could all learn from his behaviour. - 31 - 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report Our bowling benefited by having the spectacular ‘chiselled’ features of Chris Hole (38 wickets at 11) whose pace and line was a bit too much for the 4th grade opposition. It’s a pity Chris is travelling next season as higher grades are calling out for him. Warwick Folkard was as usual, the old wily fox – forever tempting batsmen to play the spin only to bowl them with the straight one – 22 wickets at 13 and was under bowled. Mark Fairlie qualified for the semis and brought to us not only some great bowling but his fielding was a bench mark that not many can match. His contributions were greatly appreciated and I look forward to seeing his results in the top grades for years to come. To everyone who played 4th grade this year I would like to take this opportunity to whole heartedly thank you for your contributions both on and off the field. The enjoyment and camaraderie shared by 11 men with a common bond is both uniting and special and unmatched in many spheres of life. So thank you. As always a big thank you to Smithy for his tireless work that really does mean we get to turn out each and every week unrivalled by any other club. Thanks also to the other captains for an interesting and lively year of debates, heated debates, volcanic debates and bruised egos – how much fun was that! 4th Grade MVP- Greg Brown To my wife for understanding that cricket and the company of men is rewarding and pretending not to notice that age shall weary them. Lastly, for us as a group of cricketers, the time to acquit ourselves in now. The window is closing and we need to bounce back and demonstrate some backbone by winning the comp. I look forward to the challenge. With a relatively new team, the Frank Gray XI entered an exciting era. This season held much promise and anything but a top six finish would be seen as a major disappointment. A wicket for Hopkins We could not have got off to a worst start to our season however, losing our first 2 games and completely outplayed in both. In saying that, we did come up against the 2 heavyweights of the competition in Lane Cove and Strathfield, who were led by Zimbabwean International Vusi Sibanda. Our first win came in the 3rd round at Lindfield. With Lindfield amassing a very competitive 236, it was going to take an immense batting display to chase down the runs, especially with our confidence low coming off two disappointing losses. But the boys finally clicked into gear and half centuries from Hopkins, Lloyd and Prashant Rai propelled us to a fantastic and important 3 wicket victory. This run chase kick started our season and gave the boys a much needed confidence boost. Over the next 3 weeks we managed to easily dispose of a few of the weaker teams. Our consistency with the bat and discipline with the ball was the major factor in stringing these 4 wins together. This sent us in to the final round of competition needing a win to secure 2nd spot on the ladder and give us that all important 2nd chance in the finals series. Our UK Import , Charlie Carter In our last game we came up against a dangerous Epping outfit, who were last years champions. We won the toss and batted first, and we got off to a flyer thanks to a quick fire 30 from Hoppa. Lloyd and Hanna then came together and put on 100 for the 4th wicket to set it up for the lower order. Charlie Carter finished off the innings superbly hitting a better than a run a ball 47 to propel us to a massive 252. Our bowlers did the job and were as consistent as ever, dismissing the Bulls for only 150. This was perfect preparation for the finals. Mahoney-Folkard Rookie of the Year- Milon In the qualifying final we came up against a very strong Auburn outfit, packed with 1st graders. Auburn got off to an impressive start, but our bowlers managed to come back at the Eagle's batsmen and dismissed them for a very chaseable 216. Unfortunately, our batting let us down massively on this day and embarrassingly were all out for only 75. This loss was extremely disappointing considering the form we had shown over the past 5 rounds. This meant we would have to come up against favourites, Lane Cove in the Semi. - 37 - 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report The Semi Final turned into be a no show, with rain abandoning the fixture only 20 overs into the match. This ended our season with the Covies progressing to the final as a result of their higher finish in the preliminaries. The backend of our season promised so much and the loss of the Rai boys for the final series was a massive blow for the team. But the boys showed great determination and I definitely can't criticise them for their commitment, as it was outstanding all the way to the end. With most of the boys returning next year, it promises to be another very successful season ahead. Special mention to Hoppa, Lloydy and Fairboy who all played their last Frank Gray games for the club. All three have been outstanding over the many seasons they have been a part of the squad. Also, I'd like to say a quick thankyou to all the Mac Uni boys who came out and supported the team throughout the season. Also a big thanks to Wrighty who scored for us throughout the entire season and Smithy for all his support with selections and all of the behind the scenes tasks. Finally, a big thankyou to all the boys who were part of the squad this season. It was a pleasure to skipper you boys and Ii look forward to hopefully leading us one step further next season. It was my first year as skipper, the teams first year back on turf after playing in the local competition and also our first year playing in a purely one day competition. Whilst the whole squad would agree that it’s great to be back on turf, something needs to be done next year to be playing a competition that hopefully aligns itself with the Shires dates. This will no doubt stop teams from trying to stack their 5th grade for the sake of easy points on a Sunday or when a higher grade player can only play one out of two Saturdays. A wicket to Ash Singh This made it difficult to field the same team on two consecutive weeks as we attempted to keep up with other teams and take advantage of the selection free for all where we could. Despite the interesting team selections across the competition, I think all the boys would say they still enjoyed their cricket despite just missing out on the finals. Some can even say they now have first grade scalps to their names! Now for a few thank you’s. I want to start by thanking Stirling Hamman and Bruce Whitehouse for their efforts in getting a turf wicket competition going for 5th grade this year. Also a big thanks to Smithy and the rest of our committee for getting not only our side but all of our teams on the field week in and week out. It was a huge effort by everyone involved. I’d also like to congratulate the Souths boys for winning the Metro Cup for this season. I think it was fitting that they took out the comp as they were the only team we couldn’t get one over during the course of the season. Now I’d just like to reflect quickly on a few individual performances and a few games that would ultimately make or break our season. Simon Fairlie had a great first season with us. Scoring 124 runs at 17.7 and taking 18 wickets at 8.8. Simon also seemed to score his runs when we needed it the most including a great knock against Pennant Hills to get us over the line. We lost Simon for a lot of our Sunday matches as he earned higher honours representing the club in under 24’s and was also a member of fourth grade’s grand final side. 5th Grade MVP- Simon Fairlie Luke Nichols also played some great knocks for us in the short time we had him. Luke scored 204 runs in 6 innings at an average of 34. Luke’s highest score was 89 against Lane Cove where he was desperately unlucky not to reach his hundred. - 42 - 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report I’d also like to congratulate Doug Latto who played his 200th game for the club this season. What a great achievement, especially for someone who didn’t start playing for Macquarie until later in life. Doug’s experience and advice was certainly invaluable to me in my first year as captain. Now to a few matches would define our season: Rnd 5 Mac Uni 165 def by Pennant Hills 2/167 This was our match that went to protest when Pennant Hills decided to play players under different names to hide the fact they were using higher grade players. We put on a competitive 165 with Tom Barnes top scoring with 31. Unfortunately we couldn’t make early inroads into the Pennant Hills batting line up and the “phantom” brothers knocked off the required runs. It was a moral victory of sorts for us and the credibility of the competition when Pennant Hills were stripped of their points but didn’t make our jobs any easier after losing a game we should have won if played on an even playing field. Rnd 9 Mac Uni 137 def Auburn 135 After a couple of loses, we really needed to stand up and be counted in this one. Tom Hollings lead the way with a great 66 supported by Jason Tabrett who scored 26. Not much lese to report on the batting side as we were rolled for 137. After the break Ash Singh decided to lead from the front and bowled unchanged claiming 4/30 off his 9 overs. Tom Hollings also chipped in with a couple and Paul Nelson claimed 4 wickets in his come back spell to take care of the Auburn lower order and seal our victory by 3 runs. During this match we certainly showed what we were capable of but we lacked the consistency to be able to repeat this performance week in and week out. Rnd 10 and 11 Double Header Vs Lindfield Whilst these matches were early season, they would have an enormous bearing on our season as we would be competing with Lindfield for a spot in the finals down the track. In game one, Lindfield tried to take advantage of the almost non existent selection criteria in 5th grade and fielded non other than first and second graders Foot and Mcleod. Whilst we managed to keep the regular 5th graders in check their “guest pair” smacked us to all parts of the ground and posted a very healthy 275. Fortunately the cricketing gods saw fit for this match to end in a draw as the heavens opened up after lunch and the match was abandoned. Paul Chew Game two saw a return to normality and a match involving two “5th grade” sides. For the first time in the season our bowling didn’t really stand up and Lindfield posted 225 off their overs. This time it looked as though our batting would get us over the line as Tim Spencer (65), Bryan Thomas (44) and Lulka (34) appeared likely to get us home. Two quick run outs then triggered a collapse which saw us lose our last 4 wickets for three runs and lose the match by 5 runs. Lindfield taking the honours in this double header. - 43 - 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report Rnd 18 and 19 Double Header vs Burwood After belting Lane Cove the match before we came to our double header against then competition leaders Burwood with our season well and truly on the line. With both Gissing and Savage in our lineup we fancied our chances of posting a competitive total. Unfortunately we were bowled out for 145 with Jonno Ingram posting 48 and Savage 26 the pick. Little did we know what would happen next. Niraj made the early breakthroughs to have Burwood 2/8. Niraj finished with 4/34. Nelson and Lulka also combined taking 3/17 and 2/18 respectively. Burwood were all out 83 and our season was still alive. Unfortunately the result was reversed in the 2nd match where our batting again faltered but the bowling wasn’t quite able to pull us out. With other results not falling our way our season was effectively over with one game to go. So over all, it was certainly an enjoyable season from a captaincy and mateship perspective, but as a team we need to be a lot more willing to seize the opportunity that presents itself and not wait for another team mate to get the job done. No doubt the boys will learn from this and make the up coming season one to remember Adrian Lulka Fifth Grade Captain 5th Grade Warm-Ups Adrian Lulka - 44 - 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report 5TH GRADE- 2006/07 SEASON RESULTS ROUND lost by 8 wickets 1 MUCC 133 South Sydney 2/136 2 MUCC 6/178 J Watters 40 A Jessop 30) 3 MUCC 4 MUCC 122 A Jessop 33 5 MUCC 165 (Tom Barnes 31) 6 MUCC 7 MUCC 7/172 (P Chew 47 T Hollings 34) defeated by 49 runs 8 MUCC 139 (J Watters 34 J Bird 30) lost by 4 wickets 9 MUCC 137(T Hollings 66) 10 MUCC 1/5 11 MUCC 221 (T Spencer 65 B Thomas 44 A Lulka 35) 12 MUCC 13 MUCC 143 A Lulka 43 14 MUCC 7/128 (D Gracie 44) 15 MUCC 16 MUCC 9/70 17 MUCC 7/269 (L Nichols 89 R McIntyre 68) defeated by 57 runs Lane Cove 212 (A Singh 4/43) 18 MUCC 145 J Ingram 48 defeated by 62 runs Burwood Briars 83 (N Pathak 4/34 P Nelson 3/17 A Lulka 3/18) 19 MUCC 119 lost by 9 runs Burwood Briars 128 (L Nichols 3/19 S Fairlie 3/24) 20 MUCC 6/276 (J Ingram 80 L Nichols 76 J Bird 43*) 21 MUCC 8/165 (W Folkard 47 J Bird 39) defeated by 4 Auburn 177 ( J Watters 3/8) wickets Bye defeated by 105 runs Burwood Briars 6/227(cc) win stripped from Pennant Pennant Hills 2/174 Hills on protest drew Lane Cove Lindfield 9/123 (J Tabrett 4/11) South Sydney 6/141 (S Fairlie 4/19) defeated by 2 Auburn 135 (A Singh 4/30 runs P Nelson 4/35) drew lost by 6 wickets Lindfield 7/275 (J Ingram 3/46) Lindfield 4/225 Bye lost by 2 wickets South Sydney 8/146 (T Hollings 3/35) defeated by 3 Pennant Hills 127 wickets Bye lost by 9 wickets drew defeated by 25 runs - 45 - Auburn 1/72 Lane Cove Pennant Hills 9/140 (S Fairlie 3/16) 2006 – 2007 MUCC Annual Report METROPOLITAN SHIELD STATISTICS 2006/07 Batsman L. Our season finished with a hard fought and narrow semi final loss to the eventual Premiers, North Shore Cricket Club. Just as importantly the team continued its role of providing a platform to introduce talented newcomers to the club. The 6th Grade Semi Final Team Of the players starting in 6th grade Kamran Milon made the most spectacular impact. After making a sensational 125 against Mosman in his debut match Milon went on to have a remarkable 700 run season, playing 4th grade and Under 24's. Jono Ingram made a steadier start to the season but his all round contribution, whether batting (373 runs), bowling (9 wickets), keeping or fielding (12 catches, 1 stumping) always had the mark of quality that suggests considerable ability. Daniel Tabrett enjoyed a 700 run/50 wicket season playing for three teams across the North Shore - Northern Beaches area. Dan played the final 6 games of the season for 6th grade and his nerveless performances and faultless technique were those of a player who will make a considerable impact in higher grades. As this is well known by a number of grade and shires clubs Mac Uni will do well to recruit Daniel to one of its Shires teams next season. 6th Grade Captain- Tony Barnes Such was the depth in the lower grades this season a number of fine players could not be immediately fitted into a side. Fortunately a spot opened up for Bryan Thomas during the exam period and Bryan went on to have an outstanding season. Bryan make 77 on debut and a fine one day hundred against Mosman. His ability to combine finesse and power made him a difficult batsman to contain and he topped the batting tally at 268 runs in limited appearances. Dave Bijlsma (244 runs) continued to reap the benefits from his dedicated approach to training in a fine second season. Aalok (Bob) Galappatti (149 runs) and Hasith Galappaththi (142 runs) had pleasing debut seasons and made a number of timely contributions in tight matches - 49 - As usual the side was well served for bowlers. Sixth Grade MVP Asita Galappatti (32 wickets at 14.84) bowled intelligently throughout the year and earned selection in the Northern Suburbs Cricket Association representative side. Off spinner Deepak Ramanathan (19 wickets at 19.74) thoughtfully countered the disadvantage of bowling on small grounds by cleverly varying his pace and never shirking from a challenge. Aviril Johri (14 wickets at 15.36) led the way late in the season and was our outstanding player in the semi final, taking 5-37. Barnes (24 wickets at 14.79) and Travers (15 wickets at 28.27) continued to add experience to the attack and enjoyed occasional successes. Niraj Pathak (9 wickets at 16.67) generally played higher grades but was impressive in cameo performances. Wayne Dean’s keeping was once again productive (11 catches, 3 run outs, 1 stumping). 6th Grade MVP- Asita Galappatti The above accounts for the individuals who played the bulk of the season in sixth grade but it was the way people gelled as team that was the most enjoyable part of the season. It was a pleasure to play with people who never let their immense enthusiasm for the game get in the way of their commitment to sportsmanship and a good, competitive spirit. I’m sure the University would be immensely heartened to have student teams such as this representing it on the sports fields of Sydney. As usual I need to thank the many players who provided much appreciated assistance with getting the kit to games, providing lifts to students from the uni and in the case of Margaret Tabrett, taking numerous excellent photos. And in this year, more so than in any other, many thanks to the club executive, committee and fellow captains for their efforts. Some of the statistics to emerge from the season border on the ridiculous: • • • • • • Team quotient of almost 400% (comprising average runs scored per wicket lost of 50 compared to opposition’s 13) Only 28 wickets lost compared to opposition’s 94 More “not outs” than “outs” registered with about half of the team not registering a batting average Stephen Rose being awarded the leading batsman in the Masters competition with 294 runs at an average of 73.50 Four bowlers taking a swag of wickets each at miserly averages (Greg Brown 21 wickets @ 12, Dave Deller 17 @ 12, Danny McVey 15 @ 11 and John Sutton 15 @ 10) with Browny’s haul being the second highest in the competition Winning sequence stretched to 13 games David Deller The main reason for our success this year was undoubtedly our bowling depth, and the record for best-ever bowling figures was amazingly broken three times. The previous best-ever figures (Ken Dixon’s 5/8) were surpassed by John Sutton’s 6/23, Dave Deller’s 6/17 and the old master Greg (“Just one more over”) Brown with an amazing 6/10. Sutton takes a catch off McVey Other solid contributors during the season included Robbie Walker, Bob Egerton, Ken Dixon (who bowled without luck all year), Clyne Fernandes (who has bowled without luck all his life and is still searching for his first Masters wicket, but scored 159 runs @ 159). Special mention also goes to John Sutton, whose genuine pace (by Masters standards) and boyish good-looks prompted more than one opposition team to ask to see some identification. Losing almost every toss this season, we were invariably batting second and, courtesy of our bowling firepower, chasing relatively small totals. On one of the rare occasions when we batted first, we amassed a record opening partnership of 224 with four consecutive batsmen having to compulsorily retire at 40. A wicket for Brown - 55 - Availabilities were also at record levels for this season and this was reflected in strong onfield performances. With 17 players regularly available, may I take this opportunity to thank those who were not selected at various stages of the season for their understanding. A huge thank you to Helen and Stephen Rose who pu t in a sterling effort in organizing all of our home games and attending to the myriad of things that need to be done on match day. Also, a vote of thanks to Club President David Smith and his committee for their tireless support during the year and to regular spectators Paul Mac, Rosco and Monty. As this project is on-going, it was decided by the Committee not to include historical statistics in this Annual Report. Manually updating the historical statistics is a time consuming effort, and this Project will make the job of compiling future Annual Reports a much simpler process, as well as ensuring that individual and club records and performances are documented with 100% accuracy. It is planned that this Project will be completed in time for the release of the 2007 /08 Annual Report. ******* - 61 -
