Another serious threat to life and property comes from the storm surge, which occurs in coastal areas. Storm surges consist of huge domes of water and storm driven waves, which are pushed inland ahead of a hurricane. The water from these storm surges and the heavy rains breed MOLD growth. Much of the damage that occurred from the past few hurricanes could have been minimized if people had taken time to get their homes and businesses prepared to weather the hurricanes and rainy weather. Photograph the damage and the conditions. Dry‐in the business as much as possible – move any undamaged furniture and other items to dry locations. Remove wet carpet and carpet pad – get it outside. If water is dripping from the ceiling – make a hole in the ceiling at that point with a screwdriver – put a bucket under it. Remove or pull back any insulation above the area. Any porous materials or upholstered furniture that can not be washed in a washing machine should be discarded if they were wet. If walls or floor has been wet – remove baseboards on both sides of the wall. If drywall ceilings or floors have been wet – and still are after two days, remove the materials immediately and discard. Wet items that can be washed in a washer should be aired dried as quickly as possible then washed and dried when power returns.
