BREAKING THE ICE! - Van Voorden Foundry

BREAKING THE ICE!
Van Voorden Castings have delivered two separate so called “built-up” projects in the first quarter of 2016.
A built-up system consists of a hub and separate blades. The blades are bolted onto this hub resulting in a fixed pitch
propeller. The big benefit being that the blades can be replaced separately and underwater.
For Steerprop Ltd. - a supplier of
azimuthing propulsion systems
(pods) - we have manufactured 4
stainless steel built-up propellers. The
built-up systems, with a diameter of
2.700 mm and 3.300 mm, are made
of high quality stainless steel and are
being used for two contra-rotating
podded drives. The total system is
very strong and efficient and is being
used on a Russian Multipurpose
Icebreaker with Ice-class notation
RMRS Icebreaker 6.
The built-up systems were designed,
produced and assembled in close cooperation with the Finnish company
Steerprop and Russian classification
society RMRS. Resulting in propellers
that are more than strong enough
to move the ship through ice of 1
meter thickness!
More recently, we also delivered 2 stainless steel built-up systems to Rolls
Royce Marine in Finland for an Multi-purpose Vessel with an Ice-class
notation RMRS Arc 5 for a company in Luxembourg. These systems each had
a diameter of 4.000 mm and were also made of high strength, impact and
wear-resistant stainless steel.
All built-ups together added up to a total of more than 50 tons of stainless
steel!
Van Voorden is one of the very few foundries in the world who are able
to provide these extremely tough stainless steel built-up propellers at the
required quality and we are looking forward to continue our growing
presence in the market of ice-going vessels.
DID YOU
KNOW?
Within Andus Group, a large
variety of companies serve
the industry throughout the
year. In 2014, the foundry
Nedstaal was added to
the group. Nedstaal is an
innovative steel producer
specializing in various types
of steel cut to size.
A large portion of Nedstaal’s
product range is made up
of rolled material - blooms
and billets - further used
in their production by the
automotive,
mechanical
engineering, agriculture, and
the oil, gas and petrochemical
industries. We are, however,
now looking into a cooperation that could bring
both companies into new
markets. Combining the
expertise of both Nedstaal
Special Steel and Van Voorden
Castings, finished products of
70 tons casting weight and
sizes of 6x6 meters will be
possible. Together we are
eager to see what this cooperation will bring and we
are looking forward to service
our customers with an even
broader range of products!
SERVICE & REPAIR: NEW BLOOD, STEADY COURSE!
The first four months of 2016 are characterized by an explosive growth in the repair of propeller blades. In total,
Service & Repair mended 83 propeller blades, in all shapes and sizes. The blades are mostly from large dredging
companies. The CPP installations of dredgers usually have a rough time in shallow waters. Hence the repairs to
these types of blades are often difficult and time-consuming procedures. For us, nothing is too big and when special
transport is involved, we are even more curious! Having said this, currently we are working on the blades of one of
our country’s largest dredging ships, The Queen of The Netherlands.
Blade foot support
The blades that we repair are often
done so in order to have a spare set
at hand on the ship. The precision
of a blade foot is of the utmost
importance for the fixation of a CPP
installation. The ship usually stores
these blades on board, somewhere
in a cargo compartment. The
chances that these blades (or blade
feet) are still damaged during
transport, are highly likely. For this
we have come up with a solution in
the form of a steel storage support
where the blade feet remain
perfectly protected. In addition, it
will also make transport by hand
truck immediately possible.
An old hand in the field
On 1 May this year, there was a
changing of the guard regarding
your direct contact for Service &
Repair. Thomas van Rijn will now
focus entirely on sales in general and
has handed over the baton to Dees
Vissers.
Dees Vissers worked at Wärtsilä for
34 years and held several positions,
including managing the propeller
repair department. With his arrival,
our Service & Repair department is
not only ready to develop further in
the propeller blade market, first and
foremost our team will always be
there for you!
