Principals Report THE MISSION OF THE HWCDSB The mission of Catholic Education in Hamilton-Wentworth, in union with our Bishop, is to enable all learners to realize the fullness of humanity of which our Lord Jesus Christ is the model. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN – SCHOOL GOALS Learning with Faith Goal The Staff of Canadian Martyrs CES will explicitly teach the traditional Catholic prayers & meditations (including the Rosary and Stations of the Cross); as well, the responses to the four parts of the Mass, which will increase student knowledge, participation and leadership during daily classroom/school prayers, and school monthly and community weekly Masses. April Focus: Church Tour - Sacristy, Choir loft, baptismal font, paintings, sculptures, altar/tabernacle Literacy Goal The staff of Canadian Martyrs CES, through differentiated instruction, will work to foster the acquisition, and understanding of reading strategies to improve proficiency across the curriculum. April Focus: 3 Types of Questions – literal, inferential, evaluative continued… Numeracy Goal The staff of Canadian Martyrs CES will introduce, expose and explore the 7 mathematical processes as they work to achieve the expectations outlined within the five strands of mathematics. This will be done through modeling, practice and open response opportunities to improve on student mindset towards mathematics and greater student success. April Focus: Reflecting Pathways Goal The staff of Canadian Martyrs CES will work to support students with explicit teaching and guided student exploration as students develop learning skills, work habits, and goal setting; and work through education/career/life planning. April Focus: Learning Skill: Independent Work Mrs. Traina- sees a huge difference in the younger grades in their independence and self-regulation from Sept. to April- less crying, comfortable, follow routines Catholic Community, Culture and Service Goal The staff of Canadian Martyrs CES will work to foster an inclusive, safe, and healthy school environment. April Focus: Earth Month & Caring Carnival Caring Carnival- May 20- The whole school will participate and be divided into teams with an associated color (students will dress in that color). There will be 7 groups for the 7 colours of the rainbow. Overall it is a day aimed at bringing awareness to/improving mental health. There will be many stations/activities including:, Zumba, Healthy Snack, Yoga, Chill Zone (sensory activities), Colouring Station/Banner of Positive Message, Music Therapy, Meditation, Button with Positive Message, Social Worker session-brag and drag (or alternative). The purpose it to build confidence/self-esteem and mental wellness (the HAT team has been working on it too) It was suggested by the council that the school should contact the board so they can do a write up and let the media know about it. Principal’s Report 1. School Improvement Plan, March Focus: see front page 2. Student enrollment - 191 to-date Currently- we have to lose one FDK class, but this may change in August (27 currently registered) 3. Staff Up-date – Bob Speziale (Supply E.A.), Tony Borges (Additional EA), Victoria Gennacaro (LTO AIT- arts itinerant teacher). Mrs. Lamparski is gradually returning 4. Co-chair Report: Melissa/Lina Pasta Dinner: Ordering main food from Roma, cake from Costco Drinks- water (limes/lemons) with compost cups, juice boxes (6/10 voted for) Get tables from church- let the custodian know 79 tickets sold- We have 125 families- 13 families are coming thus far (8 are on council) New ideas for next year???? - BBQ (Harvey’s)- bring soccer balls/lawn chairs/chalk, family fun night (BBQ, games), Taco night, food truck rd Ward One Idea- Voting May 16- June 3 Update from Craig- Our idea is on the list. This Thursday they are making a short list from 380 ideas submitted. Kate/Claire/Craig will attend the meeting this Thursday to represent the project. How often can we vote? Will find out Craig wants to divide up the area of Ward 1 and for each of us to take an area and drop off information or go door to door to promote voting for the project. We will be able to advertise through our Board website If you work in the area or are students you can still vote. Ainslie-Wood community group have been applying for these funds each year- they have received the funding consistently and have banked it. Could the kids vote? We think so. Mr. Messina will contact St. Mary’s Principal and Ward 1 Trustee about the details. Dividing up the areas: Dundurn/Locke North- Melissa Ainslie Wood- Dolly, Amy, Lina, Craig, Stephanie Lock South- Lerida/Kate Westdale- Sarah/Claire McMaster- Craig/Dolly Craig will produce a blurb to be sent out- Mr. Messina will get it printed. We will distribute it around May 16 when voting starts. End of Year Trips: Grade7/8- Wonderland The rest haven’t decided, but when they figure out their trips, we will decide how much to contribute ($510) Playday- To decide next meeting- Melissa will look into ice cream/slushy truck Teacher Appreciation- To decide next meeting Next Meeting, Tuesday May 17
