Asbury Hospice House Update
Employees Donate Over $
F
orrest General employees have donated over $500,000
to the Forrest General Healthcare (FGH) Foundation’s
Asbury Hospice House capital campaign – the second
largest gift the organization has received.
Because of their overwhelming generosity and
support, one of the patient care wings in the new Hospice
House will be named in honor of all Forrest General
employees. The employees have raised over half a million
dollars toward the project through the annual FGH
Foundation employee giving campaign.
“As a Forrest General Hospital employee, I am
honored to have been given the opportunity to be a part
of this amazing project. My personal commitment to
providing world-class healthcare to all patients and their
families is one of many reasons I support the Foundation
and the construction of the Asbury Hospice House. This
is a long-overdue asset to our community,” said Terri
Lynn Warden, planner/designer for Forrest General’s
Engineering Department.
“My decision to support the project was very easy.
Who would pass-up the opportunity to help others
in their time of need? We have been blessed with the
500,000
resources to make this dream a reality. Thank you for
the opportunity and may God bless and comfort every
individual who enters the doors of the Asbury Hospice
House,” said Warden.
Forrest General Registration Manager Cecilia Baker
stated, “I donate to the Foundation and the Hospice
House campaign because I want to help give families a
sense of comfort while they are going through a difficult
time. I know my contribution will help families cope with
the emotional and stressful times they face.”
“We have the most generous employees here at
Forrest General. They believe in this project, they believe
in this Hospice House, and they want to see it happen.
They are so phenomenal,” said Martha Dearman,
executive director of the FGH Foundation.
The FGH Foundation has received over $4.8 million
since officially launching the campaign to build it in
March 2013. More than 2,000 employee and community
donors have contributed to the project including a
$1.5 million donation from the Asbury Foundation of
Hattiesburg, Inc. and a $200,000 donation from South

Giving from the Heart
A
lthough Forrest General employees have already
given more than a half million dollars to the
Asbury Hospice House, they are gearing up for another
employee giving campaign in January.
“We have so much fun on the campaigns,” said
Russell Dykes, who is chairing the employee giving
campaign committee for a fourth year. This volunteer
committee helps with the campaign’s theme, brochures,
t-shirts, kick-off event and prizes for drawings. An
administrative assistant at Pine Grove, Dykes has been
with FGH for 26 years. “I’m amazed at the level of giving
among all employees because we set a goal and always
go over it. They’re giving from the heart.”
More than 650 FGH employees have given to the
Foundation with payroll deductions, one-time donations
and Paid Time Off (PTO), which is when employees
donate vacation time. Those who donate to the Foundation at an amount of one hour’s pay per month are members of the W.H.A.T. Club (We Help Achieve Tomorrow).
Employees can allocate to various Foundation projects
including the Hospice House, Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit, Pine Grove Spiritual Grounds and the Catastrophic
Assistance Program for Employees (CAPE).
Dykes said many employees give to the Foundation
because they have a personal connection with one of
these areas. For him, the need for a hospice facility in
Hattiesburg became apparent when his mother’s sister
had brain cancer. “Aunt Bracie
needed inpatient hospice,
but the nearest facility was
in Gulfport.” For six weeks
he and other family members drove to the Coast to
take shifts with her. “It was
difficult, but if we didn’t have
a big family, it would have
been impossible,” Dykes said,
adding that a hospice house
in Hattiesburg would have
been much more convenient.

ynthia Anderson, a patient advocate in Risk
Management, said that although she has no personal
experience with hospice, she recognizes it’s a wonderful
service and believes the
Hospice House will give
healthcare providers another
resource to assist their
patients.
“I’m very proud of the
services offered by Forrest
General,” said Anderson,

and has been with FGH
for 32 years. “The Hospice

way to help our patients.”
Giving Life to Caregivers
C
arolyn Woullard, scheduling supervisor in
Radiology, said she gives to the Foundation because
it’s a good way to help someone else. But giving to
the Hospice House became more personal when her
granddaughter, Jaycee Grace Rawls, was born in 2013
with a chromosomal disorder and died seven months
later of a congenital heart defect. During her short life,
Jaycee’s parents, Carla and J.W. Rawls of Petal, focused
on caring for her and were assisted by home hospice.
“I had a preconceived notion that hospice is the end
of life, but hospice gives life,” said Woullard, an FGH
employee since 1988. She explained, “After Carla was up
all night caring for Jaycee, her hospice nurse would give
my daughter a breather. It was a relief for Carla even
though she never looked at it as a burden.”
Woullard said the family had suffered the death of
the Rawls’ first-born, a girl who was stillborn in February
2012. “It’s been a struggle, but we have faith in God
because he makes no mistakes,” she shared. “Jaycee was
a blessing and she touched so many lives in her short
time here. She definitely served her purpose.”
As the next employee giving campaign approaches,
Woullard will serve her purpose in helping others by
joining hundreds of FGH employees who believe in the

philosophy (see box below) is demonstrated by the
employees’ contributions to the Foundation. She said
that the dedicated work of the Foundation has made it
easy for Forrest General employees to contribute. “Each
year they are creative in making the employee campaign
fun and exciting for everyone,” stated Anderson, adding,
“For me, contributing to the Foundation is an honor
and a privilege. I believe that my fellow employees feel
likewise.”
