COUNTRY OF ORIGIN REPORT Second Graders are researching a country from which their ancestors came. Students will gather information and research at home and bring the materials to school in order to craft a country report, under the guidance of the teacher. Appropriate resources include reference books and credible internet sources (World Book Online, history.com, etc.). In class, students will write a paragraph (or more) for each category below, describing aspects of life. Introduction Where is your country located? What continent is it on? What are the neighboring countries? What is the geography and climate of the land? For example, what are the names of major rivers, mountain ranges, etc.? What is the weather like throughout the seasons? Way of Life Food What crops are grown there? What types of foods do people eat there? Which foods would you like to try and why? Traditional Clothing What clothing is unique to the country? For example, Australia is known for their Akubra hats, or India is known for the Sari. Education What is the standard path for education? Are there major universities in the country? Holiday Traditions Choose a holiday unique to the country or region. What is the name of the holiday? When is the holiday celebrated? What do the people do to celebrate? (Include interesting details.) Sports, Recreation, and the Arts Is there a national sport? Name and describe it. Describe the most popular activities. Describe any significant art, music, or dance genres popular in the country. Examples may include dance companies, theater groups, orchestras, composers, artists, etc. Major Points of Interest Landforms Monuments Popular tourist attractions Closing Explain what you found to be most interesting about this country. Tell one way this country is different from ours. Tell one way this country is the same as ours. Opinion – Would you like to visit this country one day? Tell why or why not. Give specific reasons to support your opinion. Be sure to include details/evidence to support your opinion. In addition to the report, students will design a Heritage Doll at home, representing traditional attire from the researched country. Students will also create “travel brochures” that take readers on a virtual journey to the country. Please see attached for detailed instructions/suggestions for Heritage Doll and Travel Brochure. COUNTRY CHOICE DUE: MONDAY, FEB. 13, 2017 RESEARCH MATERIALS FROM HOME DUE: FRIDAY, FEB. 17, 2017 HERITAGE DOLL DUE: FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 TRAVEL BROCHURE MATERIALS DUE: FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 2017 HERITAGE DOLL DIRECTIONS The heritage doll is a fun way for you to explore the clothing from your ancestor’s era. Find out what type of clothing your ancestor wore, and try to recreate an outfit for your doll. Decorate your doll with material, felt, sequins, decorative paints, doll hair, and whatever else you can come up with. You may look in books and at photographs, use the internet, etc. For the doll’s face, take a photograph of yourself today and glue it on. Color the rest of the doll’s skin, and add shoes and clothing. We will display the doll on a bulletin board. Happy decorating! HERITAGE DOLL DUE: FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 TRAVEL BROCHURE DIRECTIONS You will send readers on a virtual journey to your country. Bring materials from home to include in your travel brochure. A template for each section will be sent home to be completed, with final assembly taking place at school. Materials Colorful paper, scrapbook paper, printed images, etc. to create a travel brochure of your country Directions: Based on your research, print, cut out, or illustrate images to fit into designated boxes on the travel brochure Pictures must include: o Map o Flag o 3 different points of interest with a brief description of each location Print out the name of your country to fit the brochure template.
