Before you Begin ● ● ● Decide what you want to say Plan it out (on paper? as mind map? in PowerPoint?) Who is your audience – ● inform, don't patronise How much time do you have? Using Power Point ● Do you actually need Power Point? – ● ● ● ● ● ● ● nothing? prezi? Create a clear and simple slide design which you can use again and again One slide takes 1-2 minutes to present Short points, which you can expand on verbally Use a big, clear, sans serif font There are very few good colour combinations! Avoid snazzy transitions, use animations rarely Remember what Iain Woodhouse told you! How to Say it ● You are giving a performance ● Keep to time ● Cut material to fit the time limit, do not speed up! ● Keep to the topic - or you'll lose your audience ● Don't read from your notes ● Do you really need paper notes? – ● Power Point Presentation mode? Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse Rehearsal ● ● Practice makes perfect Allows you to become more familiar with material and structure ● Identify and resolve weaknesses ● Practice language ● Ensure you get the timings correct Structure ● ● Greet audience - introduce yourself The opening: – – – ● ● ● ● give the audience a question to think about amaze: throw in a (relevant) fact or quote tell a joke?
