say
the speaker never looked
at me
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
the speaker spoke too softly
strong accent - voice was
unclear
the speaker spoke too
quickly
the speaker read the slides
the speaker was
unenthusiastic
the speaker was
monotonous
the visuals were poor
the speaker's clothing
irritated me (!!)
Before you Begin
●
●
●
Decide what you want to say
Plan it out
(on paper? as mind map? in PowerPoint?)
Who is your audience
–
●
inform, don't patronise
How much time do you have?
Using Power Point
●
Do you actually need Power Point?
–
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
nothing? prezi?
Create a clear and simple slide design which
you can use again and again
One slide takes 1-2 minutes to present
Short points, which you can expand on verbally
Use a big, clear, sans serif font
There are very few good colour combinations!
Avoid snazzy transitions, use animations rarely
Remember what Iain Woodhouse told you!
How to Say it
●
You are giving a performance
●
Keep to time
●
Cut material to fit the time limit, do not speed up!
●
Keep to the topic - or you'll lose your audience
●
Don't read from your notes
●
Do you really need paper notes?
–
●
Power Point Presentation mode?
Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse
Rehearsal
●
●
Practice makes perfect
Allows you to become more familiar with material
and structure
●
Identify and resolve weaknesses
●
Practice language
●
Ensure you get the timings correct
Structure
●
●
