BUILDING HISTORY
61 Commercial Street was built in 1889-1891, a time when the High Falls neighborhood was an industrial area and Brown’s
Race (waterway) supplied power for much of the area. The building, initially constructed when streetcars were the mode
of public transportation, was built as the powerhouse for the Rochester Railway Company. This is the likely origin of the
building’s nickname, the “Old Trolley Barn.”

The building’s exterior architecture features Roman arches with molded brick voussoirs, massive rock-faced ashlar lintels on
trabeated openings and crow-stepped gable end. The interior architecture features brick walls throughout the building’s

office renovations. In 1999, we renovated
the Canfield & Tack Building (built 1888),
presently known as the Partners Building.
In 2004, Norry Management renovated
the Lafler Engraving Building (built
1890). These buildings are occupied

Bracker and Associates to provide
the office design concept for the 61
Commercial Street - 2007 renovation.
The windows will be restored to allow a
maximum amount of natural light into
the proposed office suites. Significant
architectural details will be retained to
ensure that the office spaces are not only
bright and spacious, but also retain the
building’s unique historical character.
Due to the building’s layout, the building
could be occupied by a single tenant, or
multiple tenants with suites ranging from
4,500 – 27,000 square feet. Renovation
is expected to begin in July, 2007 with
occupancy possible as early as November,
2007.
