Reception - St Peter`s Primary School

St. Peter’s C.E. Primary School
Year R Curriculum Fact Sheet
for Parents - Summer 2017
This gives you some information about some of the work your child will be involved in during the term. It would be very
difficult to detail everything so we have just included those topics which we feel are the most relevant and those in which
parents could be supportive of their children’s learning. Please keep it so that you can refer to it as the term progresses.
Maths
Literacy
Together we will be helping the children to gain their independence when working on an activity
to provide a good transition from YR to Year 1.
 We will be using Maths skills to solve simple addition and subtraction problems. The
children will be learning to explain how they solve their number problems and explain
their working out.
 We will be using money through role play activities and in the snack area. Encourage your
child to recognise coins, money and amounts. An apple is 6 pence, how can I pay for it?
This car is 3p, which coins will I use? For some children, 13p and 18p.
 We will be learning to read and write numerals up to and beyond 20. Why not order
number cards at home? Try hiding some numbers then ask your child to recognise which
numbers are missing.
 Counting activities will include counting on and back in twos, fives and tens. We will also
be solving problems by counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. e.g. I’ve got 6 pairs of socks, how many
have I got altogether? 2 4 6 8 10 12 – 12 socks
 Measuring activities will involve sand/water activities to develop the children’s
comparative vocabulary when comparing lengths for example, longer than... shorter
than... shortest, longest, masses - heavier than...but lighter than… and capacities. Please
can you help your child to use vocabulary to compare objects? E.g. the giraffe is taller
than the zebra, but shorter than a T-Rex.
 We will also be measuring distance by playing sports games and ordering the distances
from the furthest to the shortest, awarding 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes!
 Some children will be partitioning numbers. For example – 45 = 40+5 = 4 tens and 5 ones
(However, learning will be differentiated according to children’s abilities.)
You can help by practising these things at home with your child in their ‘Wow moments’
book!
Together we will be developing our independent reading and writing skills. To help your child:
 Please share lots of different types of books at home, fiction and non-fiction to develop
your child’s reading skills. Encourage your child to talk about the features of the book
e.g. title, author, blurb, contents page, and to describe to you the main events,
characters and ideas in the book so that they are showing their understanding of the
story.
 When reading, encourage the children to sound out unfamiliar words and use the
pictures as clues to help read difficult words. Also encourage your child to look for
digraphs in words and sentences so that they can ‘trap them’ to read the word, e.g. I can
see a goat and a cow. The farmer gets up at six in the morning. The clown did tricks with
the chimpanzee.
 We will continue to practise segmenting words with digraphs in (e.g. shop, zoom, and
seed, coin, burn) for children to then write in simple captions and sentences.
 We will be developing our writing skills to become independent writers and beginning to
write sentences using clear finger spaces, full stops and capital letters appropriately.
 The children will also be practising thinking of their own sentences and writing them
“Learn, sparkle & shine…”
Also available on the website;www.st-peters-farnworth.bolton.sch.uk,
independently.
Some children will be encouraged to extend their sentences using conjunctions (e.g. and,
because, but)
 We will be practising spelling tricky words (that the children can’t sound out) (e.g. the,
has, we, said, you, was) correctly in our sentences.
(However, learning will be differentiated according to children’s abilities.)
We will continue to develop our letter formation in preparation for Y1, ensuring letters are the
same size and sit on the line. We will also be continuing to practise writing our full names and
this can be practised at home too!
You can help your child with these things at home by asking them to write a school diary –
just a simple sentence about their day at school. Please bring in to school good writing
done at home; we would love to share it with the class!
Our topic this term is ‘Watching things grow!’
We are learning the 5 key things that determine whether something is living or non-living and
we’ve learnt a little chant to help us – high 5 we’re alive! – ask your child to explain this to you
and show their understanding!
From this, we will be exploring what plants need to grow and will be planting our own seeds to
see what they grow in to. We will encourage them to explain what is happening using our
connectives e.g. First the seed, next…. then … finally … We are also looking for children to use
the word ‘because’ – we don’t want them to just tell us what has changed, we want them to
explain why it has changed.
We will be learning about animal life cycles, particularly chicks, frogs and caterpillars, and will
be talking about the things these animals need to change and to grow. If we’re very lucky, we
might even have our own chicken eggs to observe!! We will be able to watch them hatch and
grow into chicks, and to talk about the changes over time. We will also be looking at, and
exploring, different animal habitats and talking about the similarities and differences between
them. All activities will develop sorting / comparing / classifying skills and will develop the use
of their senses to explore our environment. It will also help to develop their explanations and
understanding.
You can help by encouraging your child to help in the garden and by talking about different
creatures in the environment, and recording this in their ‘Wow moments’ book!
