Hansen`s Summer Reading Challenge! READ-A

Hansen’s Summer Reading Challenge!
READ-A-THON Fundraiser
Dear Hansen families,
We had a great success last year with the Read-A-Thon. Our kids read over 63,000 minutes and raised over
$2,500. The Read-A-Thon is meant to motivate our kids to read all summer long and 100% of the money we
raise will help support the school’s enrichment activities without selling anything. I hope this fundraiser
can someday become our main source of income to fund all of the great enrichment programs we support
throughout the school year.
Here’s how it works:






Students set a goal for the number of hours they will spend reading this summer
Then find sponsors to pledge money for their reading (Mom, Dad, neighbors, visiting relatives,
etc.)
Each time a student reads he/she will record what was read and the amount of time spent in their
Reading Log (enclosed in this packet)
The amount of hours spent reading plus the amount of money raised will equate to a number of
“Read-a-thon points! (2 points for each minute read and 1 point for every cent raised)
The student in each grade level with the most Read-a-thon points will get to treat their class to a
reward of their choice! (a pizza party, ice cream party, an extra recess or other principal
approved idea. Kids-use your imaginations……)
The student (including all the grade levels) who reads the most hours will receive a special
mystery present (determined by how much money is raised over-all. Last year it was a

bike!)
One more way to get Read-a-Thon Points: Fill out our Summer Scavenger Hunt Form (enclosed
in this packet- one point per question answered)
Being read to counts for minutes! If one participating student reads to another participating
student they both get to count the time!! Reading before bed counts. Reading instead of watching
TV and playing video games definitely counts!!
Money and Reading logs due back by Monday Sept 8th. Awards will be distributed the
next week!!
Students moving on to middle school you will still be eligible for the mystery prize, just
return your envelope to the school by 9/8/14

Dear Sponsor,
The Hansen Summer Reading Challenge is a reading incentive program designed to motivate our
children to read. 100% of the collected money will be used by our Parent Association, Hanson
Community Council (HCC) to support Hansen students. The student with a combination of the
most minutes read and the most money collected will earn a reward!
Sample pledge amounts:

You could pledge $1/hr and if your student read 1 hr per week all summer you would owe $12.14

If your student reads 20 min per day every day for the whole summer (83 days) and you pledge
$0.01 per minute you would owe $16.60.

If you pledge .05 per min @20 min/ day X 83 days = $83.00

Way to go!
Dear Parents,
This summer we are doing a read-a-thon to motivate our kids to read all summer long.
Kids record the amount of minutes they read and get sponsors to donate money to equal read-athon points. The winners will be tallied in the fall and a student from each grade and one overall
winner will get great prizes! (More details in the packets coming in backpacks Friday June 6)
Research shows that children who read books for just 20 minutes a day perform better in
school. We are setting up the program to excite the kids but we need YOU to support it and keep
it present in their thoughts this summer. Here are some ideas:





Set aside a reading time: before bed, in the morning or after dinner for example.
Pick a reading place: set up a comfortable quiet spot or have fun thinking of all the different places they can
read.
Read together: one person can read or you can take turns. Older siblings can gain confidence reading to
younger siblings.
Keep your child’s favorite books around: It can be comforting for a new reader to build confidence and
fluency by re-reading a favorite book.
Get caught reading yourself: when your child sees you read they will be inspired to read.
There is a Scavenger Hunt included in the packet that is meant to get kids going to the library
and bookstores throughout the summer. There are all sorts of fun events coming up for the whole
family. See the calendar included in the packet for the dates and the Scavenger Hunt form for
more information. Or look on the Timberline Regional Library website.
The greatest benefit we hope for from the read-a-thon is to introduce kids to a whole world of
reading just for fun. Another great benefit to the read-a-thon is the money we can raise to
support the projects we are planning for the coming school year, like field trips, after school
programs, assemblies that bring theater, artists and new ideas to our kids. HCC reimburses
teachers for their expenses, buys books for the library, equipment for playground and so much
more!
“Few children learn to love books by themselves.
Someone has to lure them into the wonderful world of
The written word: someone has to show them the way.”
-Orville Prescott
***Look for the Read-a-Thon packet in your child’s backpack soon
