STEM Project 25-27th July 2016 year 9 trip to FSC Malham On Wednesday 27, some Year 7 students were involved in a project based around STEM. We mainly focused on the E which stands for engineering. On Monday morning, year 9 students travelled to Malham for a Geographical and Biological trip. During this project, we took part in numerous events planned by the visitors from ‘Tomorrow's Engineers.’ Our first task was listening to the importance of engineering and how it is useful in everyday life. We learnt about how we could use things around us to create energy and the different sources we already use. There were loads: nuclear, wind, solar, natural gasses and many more. After this task, we started to make our own cars in our groups, which were chosen by our teachers, from materials that were provided. Also, the materials that were provided showed us that energy can be created by the nature around us,. For example the energy we used was solar, so we charged the cars that we built by going outside and using the sun shining onto our solar panel. We had a race when all the cars were charged! Overall, I think everyone really enjoyed all the tasks and it also built team skills. We worked a lot on our TRIC skills by using our team work, reflection and creative skills. By Mahima Miah and Kayleigh Sawyers Mays 7CSC On the first day, we have been greeted by our supervisors: Ruth and Ellie, which after we ate a small lunch, led us to Malham Cove which is a 94 metre tall limestone formation which used to be a waterfall. We have completed a survey about how well-kept the place is. After this we were taken to our rooms in FSC Malham. On the next day, we have been send to a coach after breakfast which driven us to Clapham Beck. There we compared many statistics of a river. This was done in two places: Near the beginning of the river and near its end. When we came back, all students were involved in Malham Olympics. This included throwing a wellie (instead of a shot put), throwing a pipette (Instead of Javelin) and running at a spot to try to get an exact time of ten seconds which included a relay too. And the most exciting one to do: Paired triple jump where people linked their hands together and jumped. On the last day, we went to Malham Forest to investigate the growth of Dog Mercury plant’s growth within sun lighted areas and shadow areas. Then students were send to eat their dinner, looking at the beautiful Malham Lake, and they took some pictures. We thanked Ruth and Ellie for teaching us and Mr Thor for organising the trip. Then we headed back to The Boulevard Academy. By Sebastian Cieslewicz, Tapi Ngoro and Ben West Costello Stadium On Wednesday 6th July a selection of year 7, 8 and 9 students from The Boulevard Academy took part in the Hull Schools Athletics Competition at Costello Stadium. We arrived at 9:30 with our stomachs full of butterflies and excitement. We sat on the hill, with our packed lunches patiently waiting for each event to start. Students took part in a range of athletics events against all the schools in Hull. Eventually the events flew by and students became tired. Now and then, between each event, results were announced. The school did really well taking home 7 medals. In year 9 Caitlin received a gold for the second year running in long jump and a silver medal for the 100m sprint. In addition to this, Eligijus took first place in the high jump with a triumphant 150cm. Sophie completed the Year 9 medal haul taking bronze in the shot put. Year 7 students took home three medals. Lariana took silver in the discus while Irmantas took bronze in the javelin. The final medal of the day was awarded to Ryan with a throw of over 21 metres in the Year 8 discus. At the end of the day everybody put 100% effort in to their performance and enjoyed it. All of the students did exceptionally well representing The Academy and should all be proud of themselves. By: Caitlin Pearson The end of year reward for all students with 100% attendance On the 22nd of July 2016, 53 students from The Boulevard Academy went on a coach to McDonalds and then walked to the Vue cinema to see the B.F.G. (Big Friendly Giant) film. These students went because they had achieved 100% attendance throughout the year. When they were at the cinema, the teachers gave out sweets to enjoy during the film. Some of the students said to us that they thought the film was fantastic and it was a great treat to go to McDonalds. Would you like to go? If you want to have this amazing experience next year, you need to come to school every day! Next year, even if you have a cough or a cold, just try to do what we have all done and come to school. By Thomas Olsen (7RWA) & Maja Jakubowska (7AWH) Shakespeare Studies Students in Year 8 have been studying Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth. Recently they put their interpretations of events into an imaginary newspaper story. The students showed great understanding of the motivation of the characters, as well as the imaginative and creative flair needed to design a convincing front page. Here are some of the results. Duncan’s eternal slumber: who slayed a god ? Castle grieve after former King Duncan’s pale and bloody corpse was found in his bed. He’d been stabbed in the chest multiple times. But we still don’t know who ended Duncan’s waking days or why. Investigators have speculated that Duncan died in his sleep. It didn’t take a genius to figure that out though. But it did take an education to figure out that the weapon used to kill Duncan was the type of knife given to most of the King’s guards. Duncan will be buried in his family’s crypt. Macbeth told our reporter, “What has happened is a shock to everyone. I will not rest until the killers are caught. Some blamed the King’s servants and guards, others blamed the three witches and other foul spirits. The last memorable tale was that Macbeth and his wife had plotted to kill the King so that Macbeth could become King. Training Day Training Day Academy Opens Academy Closes Saturday School Year 10 Saturday School Year 9 Saturday School Year 8 Saturday School Year 7 Year 7 Parent Consultation STOP PRESS The Boulevard Academy lunch price will rise to £2.30 in September. The main suspects, in order of likeliness are: Lady Macbeth, the three witches or Duncan’s youngest son. At this moment in time, none of the suspects have been questioned by police or reporters. During the week of the 25th July, students from Year 7 and 8 showed their IMYC projects off to parents and relatives. The theme of the project was the First World War Centenary. The aim of the project was to create a poem, piece of informative text on an individual from the local area who fought in the Great War or a memorial to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and the First World War Centenary. This project also had a once in a lifetime prize in rewarding two students with a visit to the battlefields in Belgium and France later this year. The project allowed students to find out about local heroes and even a greater opportunity was given to look at our own family history and see if any of our own relatives were involved in the Great War. For my project, I created a booklet with information about my family during the war, mainly focusing on my Great Great Grandad. Other students chose to create a poem as if they were fighting or had experienced the war. Others created imaginative memorials made out of wood to remember horses involved in the war, one student created a wreath with a poem embedded inside. Another created a memorial with a symbol of light to remember those that fought and lost their lives during the Great War. A lot of hard work had gone into the students’ projects. People of Dunsinane have been warned to stay in groups. If anyone comes forward with information about King Duncan’s death, they will be greatly rewarded, depending on information. Please inform the GCP (General Chief Prosecutor). It hurts me deeply how someone could infiltrate my home and kill my beloved cousin.” Overall, I personally enjoyed this project as I have a huge passion in History. No-one would have thought he would die that very night. The maid’s witness account was passed across to the police, who are investigating further. The reason of the murder is unknown, but many rumours have been speculating . The most popular (yet quite unreliable) rumour is that it was revenge for the victorious battle just a few Furthermore, the resident chef submitted a witness statement. “I was cooking the dinner for our guests. It was halfway through the feast when I noticed Macbeth acting curiously suspicious around Visit to Parliament On Tuesday 19th July, the year 9 and certain students got to visit the Houses of Parliament. We were able to take a tour around the building. We had to arrive at school at 4:30am so some students struggled to get up early in the morning. Fortunately, they were able to fall asleep on the coach because the journey was five hours long. A certain teacher, was pretending to draw on students faces when they were asleep. Mr Blaza thought that the trip was very interesting and informative, showing British democracy in action. He was also very excited to have had a Pokémon on his back. Unfortunately, Shannon Cutter could not catch it. Charlie Storr thought that the trip was good. It was also very interesting, however he wasn’t allowed to use his phone to take images of the inside of Parliament. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth the king. I then spotted a worried-looking Lady Macbeth. She then hurriedly took Macbeth into a dark corner, away from the banquet. Her voice was muffled and inaudible, so I couldn't make her words out. However, I did hear three very treacherous words, “Kill King Duncan”. These words sent shivers down my spine.” Now some joyous news. Macbeth is to be crowned King next week, along with his wife Lady Macbeth (both pictured above) being crowned Queen. “I am very happy for Macbeth. I’m sure the coronation will be a good one.” commented Lord Lennox. If you have any information regarding the murder of King Duncan, please contact the Elizabethan or the police force. Mr Webster thought that when we went into the Houses of Commons into the viewing gallery, John Bercow – the speaker of the House of Commons – was taller and a lot funnier in real life. “Having a tour around the Parliament was an astonishing experience for me seemingly I would like give a speech in the exact same spot as Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama”. Some of the groups got to witness a debate happening in the House of Commons. The debate was about the education of children in places around England. Sali said that she was fascinated by ladie’s determination of her point. She said she liked Justine Greening’s character and passion for education. Wyke Sixth Form College Visit On the 7th July 16 students from the Year 9 Gifted and Talented group went to visit Wyke Sixth Form College to learn about Oxford and Cambridge Universities and to meet some of the A level students. After meeting some student who were studying English, we were invited to take part in a closed procedure activity. We were given a poem with some of the words missing. We had to decide how to fill in the gaps with our own language choices. Following this, everyone discussed what they had written and then we were shown the original poem. We talked about the way the language affected the meaning and mood of the poem. In the History meeting, we discussed a range of historical and political events and how we felt about them. We were also given sources to analyse. Lastly, in Physics, the students talked over how we might rearrange the equations of things such as potential energy, and how the temperature changes down a waterfall. By Mateusz Gornacki From Monday, April 24th, to Thursday, April 27th, 1611 Dear Duncan’s Dead! EBM 12/07 King Duncan was found dead last week after spending the night at Dunsinane, the then Thane Of Cawdor’s castle. He was found with multiple stab wounds. The country has been left in complete dismay; who would want to brutally murder such a valiant ruler? The King’s guards were found with bloody daggers and a “Stone cold expression plastered on their faces”. Macbeth was said to have been overcome with fury and killed the guards– in vengeance of the King. He stated, “I couldn’t stop myself… anger took over me. My ruler and friend was lying dead in front of me and his murderers beside him. I, his host, had to protect him , I failed that duty. To avenge him was all I could do.” There was complete chaos in the castle after Macduff found the blood-stained body of the King. Lady Macbeth was said to have cried out in horror before fainting from the shock. Not long after, a distraught Malcom and Donalbain fled the country leading to vicious rumours about their loyalty. We have spoken to a servant, on the night of Macbeth's coronation, at Dunsinane– who told us about the events leading up to the King’s death. “Macbeth and his wife had held a lavish feast, in celebration of winning the recent battle. The King had been invited to stay at the castle overnight. It was an extremely festive night, distinguished guests crowded round the castle hall. It was unforgettable; everyone was joyous as the night drew to a regrettable close. Nobody could know what would happen. King Duncan before his death There is speculation that the guards killed King Duncan as a plot to put Macbeth on the Throne. I am not one to indulge in circulating rumours, but I do know Macbeth has gained quite a following. Apparently, after the coronation ended, Macbeth was seen speaking conspiratorially with two suspicious men. “ Why anyone would want to kill our brave and well-loved King is unknown, but justice will be surely sought for our courageous King. King Duncan of Scotland has been murdered in his sleep! The important question is: Where were the guards when King Duncan needed them most?
