EVENT CALENDAR
CRAB SEASON OPENS!
Congratulations Joan!
Civil Manger of the Year
On December 9, 2015, while
attending the annual Oregon State
Sheriff’s Association Conference
in Bend, Or., Curry County
Deputy Joan Allen-Steineke was
awarded the Civil Manager of the
Year for 2015. Deputy Allen was
chosen out of several applicants
from thirty-six counties.
An
awards committee reviews all
nominations and the recipient is
awarded the honor at the annual
OSSA Conference.
Sheriff’s Wards nomination letter
is inside on page 6. Joan is also
responsible for providing Police
Logs to the Beacon and other
Curry County newspapers.
ODFW will open the crab fishery
on January 4th, with fishermen
allowed to set pots beginning
January 1st. Crab season has been
closed due to unusual high levels
of domoic acid. Recent testing
shows the south coast with levels
under FDA guidelines. Crab will
still be monitored, but overall, this
is good news for fishermen!
Rain
It was a wet week, with last
Thursday being very wet, causing
flooding in low-lying areas with
5.64” falling in 24-hours. Some
areas received more, some less.
There were reports of trees down,
some slide activity on Cape
Blanco Road, along with high
water just about everywhere.
Change of tides and diminishing
rain assisted with keeping flood
waters at bay in our area. Not so
for other areas north.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Zion Church
By Ronn Kerr
Everyone is invited to the special
Christmas Eve Communion and
Candle Service at Zion Lutheran
Church at 6:00 pm, Thursday,
December 24. To usher in the
celebration of Christmas, Zion
Church’s Christmas Eve service
will feature traditional Christmas
music from soloists Ruby Wagner
and Pat Taylor, flutist Suzanne
Monks and pianist Ruby Wagner
plus the reading of the Christmas
Scriptures, a Christmas message
by Pastor Ronn, the celebration of
Holy Communion and the
Christmas
Eve
candlelight
ceremony.
“We are encouraging the entire
community to join with the
members of Zion Church for a
joyful and sacred Christmas Eve
Communion and Candle Service,”
said Pastor Ronn. “It is one of the
most joyous and holy moments of
the Christian year and we look
forward to sharing this special
time with everyone.”
Zion Church is a community of
progressive
Protestants
(Lutherans,
Methodists,
Presbyterians, Disciples, etc.) that
come together for worship,
fellowship, and outreach at 20th
and Washington Streets in Port
Orford. Bible study is at 10:00
am every Sunday followed by the
worship celebration at 11:00 am.
Holidays at Cape Blanco
By Dana Gurnee
“A Victorian Christmas” will be
presented at the 27th Annual
Christmas Opening of the historic
Hughes House near Port Orford.
From 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on
Dec. 26, 27 and 28, visitors can
see the Victorian farmhouse built
by pioneers Patrick and Jane
Hughes. The 3,000-square-foot,
11-room home, made from oldgrowth Port Orford cedar, will be
decorated by local organizations.
The house was built in 1898. Jane
Hughes lived there until she died
in 1923.
Homemade cookies and hot
spiced cider will be available, and
the gift shop will be open with
discounts of 10 percent or more
on all items.
Weather permitting, nearby Cape
Blanco Lighthouse will also be
open for tours. The lantern room
will be closed, but free tours of
the work room will be available.
Entry to both sites is free, but
donations are welcome. Both sites
are on the National Register of
Historic Places, and both are
located on Cape Blanco Road,
which meets Highway 101 about
four miles north of Port Orford,
between Mileposts 296 and 297.
Burning Bowl Service
By Rev. Robin Haruna
Unity of Bandon will mark the
passage of 2015 with a "Burning
Bowl" service on Sunday,
December 27 at 11:00 AM. As
2015 completes its cycle and the
Year 2016 is born, it is a time to
let go of old beliefs, attitudes, and
experiences that no longer serve
our highest purpose, and open the
way for fresh new insights and
inspiration.
Fire is symbolic of the purification
process and participants will be
given the opportunity to write
down what they wish to release
and then burn the paper on which
they write these things. Through
this process, unwanted and
limiting attitudes and behavior
patterns such as fear, guilt, and
unforgiveness can be released to
create space for new blessings.
Unity of Bandon is located one
mile south of 11th Street on
Highway 101. All are welcome to
attend. Call 541-347-4696 for
more information.
will be sold for each helmet and
tickets are $5.00 each. There is no
limit of number you can purchase.
The drawing will take place on
New Year's Day 2016. You can
learn more at our web site and
even purchase tickets online http://sixesriverfire.com/. You
can also purchase tickets at Coos
Curry Hardware, Gold Beach
Lumber and Langlois Market.

Win a SRFD Helmet
By Rebecca Malamud
The Sixes River Fire Department,
a
charitable
501(c)(3)
organization, is offering chances
to win one of two helmets to
support our firefighters in 2016.
Our fire department is 100%
volunteer so we rely on donations
from people like you to
supplement our modest annual
budget. We had our first
successful
helmet
fundraiser
during the Cape Blanco Country
Music Festival where we raised
almost $5000 to support our crew.
We were encouraged by our initial
success, so now we are
conducting two simultaneous
chances to raise funds to buy a
new used truck which is sorely
needed to help the Sixes River
Fire Department carry out our
duties to protect our community.
There are two helmets — one
green and yellow Sixes River
Firefighter helmet for Oregon
Ducks fans and one orange and
black helmet for Oregon Beavers
fans. Each helmet is signed by the
players of the respective teams in
permanent ink. Only 5,000 tickets

sponsoring an art and poetry
exhibit: "A Different Slant." This
is a call to artists to send a photo
of a piece of wall art to Weld

Rotary News
By Jo Rieber
The Rotary Club of Port Orford
recognized Jada Patterson and
Carrie Rivington as the December
students of the month at the
Rotary lunch on Thursday,
December 17. Jada Patterson, a
Driftwood middle school student
was praised for her sense of
responsibility and described by
her
robotics
teacher,
Jake
VanDam as one of the best
students he has ever had. Jada’s
interests are in science and
engineering. She is considering a
career in marine biology.
Carrie Rivington, a senior at
Pacific High School, was selected
as Student of the Month because
of her optimistic I-can-do-it
attitude. She enjoys her robotics
class, and is participating in
Varsity Basketball, and helps her
friends with pre-calculus. Her
career interests are in nursing, and
she hopes to attend Southern
Oregon University after she
graduates.
Page 6
Jake VanDam and his middle
school Robotics Class displayed
the robot they designed and built
for this year’s competition. Each
student took part in a presentation,
describing the Robotics Class and
the competition. The students
obviously enjoyed participating in
the planning, building and testing
process. They learn mechanical
and technical engineering skills,
including coding and programing.
At
competitions
they
are
fascinated to see how other teams
approached the same challenge,
but came up with different
solutions. They are proud to be
part of a culture where competing
teams help one another.
Mr. VanDam thanked the Rotary
Club for the donation of robot
building materials and tools
needed in the Robotics classroom.
Nomination Letter for
Joan Allen-Steineke
Sheriff John Ward submitted the
following nomination to the
Oregon
State
Sheriff’s
Association.
The nomination
sums up Joan’s dedication to
serving the people of Curry
County.
Most all Sheriff's Offices have
several employees in the civil
division who do the processing of
mandated civil service and CHL's.
Here in Curry County due to
financial and budget constraints,
we have one person who does it
all. Chief Civil Deputy Joan Allen
-Steineke is responsible for all
civil process and returns in Curry
County including the ever
increasing demand for CHL's. The
numbers for one person is huge
and for example since January
2015, Joan has processed over 840
civil
papers
including
79
Restraining
Orders,
264
Subpoenas, 101 FED's, 139
Summons and Complaints, 95
Summons and Petitions, 64
Orders, 24 Miscellaneous papers
and 76 Foreclosures with -0OSSA errors. Not only does Joan
stay extremely busy on civil
process, she also processed and
reviewed 292 CHL's. Deputy Joan
Allen-Steineke not only is the
Chief Civil Deputy, she is also
dual certified in Dispatch and
Corrections and steps in whenever
there is a need for assistance.
What I can tell you about Joan,
she is an amazing employee that
works very hard trying to keep up
on her duties that should take
three to four people to do her job.
I feel Joan is well deserving of the
award and she has my full
recommendation.
