Introduction
TheAdvisorManualisintendedtobeatoolforadvisorstoRegisteredStudentOrganizations(RSOs)and
InterestGroupsatFloridaAtlanticUniversity.AllRSOsarerequiredtohaveanadvisor,butyourroleis
moreimportantthanmerelyanameonapieceofpaper.Weallknowthatclassroomlearningiscentral
tothecollegeexperience;however,studentsalsogainvaluableskillsandknowledgefromco-curricular
involvement.Asanadvisor,youwillhaveagreatimpactonstudentlearning.
Inordertobestservestudentsandgetthemostoutofyourexperience,itisimportantthatyoufully
understandyourroleasanadvisorandthemanywaysinwhichyoucanencouragestudent
development.Thismanualwasdesignedtoprovideinformationongeneraladvisorrolesandfunctions,
bestpractices,andUniversitypoliciesthatrelatetoRSOs.
Pleasenotethatpoliciesandprocedureschangefrequently,soinformationcontainedinthismanualis
subjecttochangewithoutpriornotice.Inordertodecreasetherateatwhichinformationbecomes
outdated,thesectionswerewrittenwithlinkstoadditionalinformation.StudentInvolvementwilltryto

WhatisanAdvisor?
AllRegisteredStudentOrganizations(RSOs)atFAUarerequiredtohaveanadvisor.Theadvisorisafulltimefacultyorstaffmemberwhovolunteerstimetoassistandsupporttheorganization’soperation.
Advisorscanserveinseveraldifferentcapacitiesorroleswiththeirstudentorganization.

Manystudentswillcometoseetheiradvisorasamentor.Thesuccessoftheserelationshipscanlast
manyyearsandprovetobeveryrewardingforbothstudentandadvisor.Tobeeffectiveinthiscapacity,
youwillneedtobeknowledgeableoftheiracademicprogramandprofession,interestedinpersonal
andprofessionaldevelopmentofnewprofessionals,andwillingtoconnectstudentstoanetworkof
professionals.
TeamBuilder
Whennewofficersareelectedornewmembersjointheorganization,youmayneedtotakethe
initiativeintransformingthestudentsfromindividualswithseparategoalsandexpectationsintoa
team.Todothis,youwilllikelyneedtoconductaworkshoporretreat.Trainingstudentsineffective
team-buildingtechniqueswillkeeptheminvestedintheorganization.
ConflictMediator
Inevitably,studentswhojointheorganizationwithdifferentagendas,goalsandideasabouthowthings
shouldfunctionandwhatdirectiontheyshouldbetaking.Whenworkingwithstudentswhohavecome
intoconflict,youmayneedtomeetwiththemandhavethemdiscusstheirissueswitheachother.In
somecases,itrequireshonestfeedbackfromtheadvisortothestudents.
ReflectiveAgent
Oneofthemostessentialcomponentstolearningin“outofclassroom”activitiesisprovidingtimefor
studentstoreflectonhowandwhattheyaredoing.Asanadvisor,encourageyourofficerstotalktoyou
abouthowtheythinktheyareperforming,theirstrengthsandtheirweaknesses.Studentslookto
advisorsforconstructiveandhonestfeedback.
Educator
Asanadvisor,youwillhaveanimportantroletoplayinmodelingbehavior,guidingthestudentsto
reflectonactions,andbeingtheretoanswerquestions.Sometimesyourroleistodonothingatall,
whichcanbeoneofthehardestthingstodo.
PolicyInterpreter
Forstudentorganizationstooperate,theymustunderstandpolicies,proceduresandrules.Attimes,
studentsmaynotbeawareofthesepoliciesandtheywilldothingsinaninappropriatemanner.The
moreyouknowaboutthesepolicies,themoreeffectiveyouwillbeinyouradvising.

WhyBecomeanAdvisor?
TherearemanybenefitsassociatedwithbecominganadvisortoaRegisteredStudentOrganization
(RSO).Herearejustafewofthebenefits:
1. Seeingandhelpingstudentslearnanddevelopnewskills
2. Watchingadisparategroupcometogethertosharecommoninterestsandworktoward
commongoals
3. Developingapersonalrelationshipwithstudents
4. Furtheringpersonalgoalsorinterestsbychoosingtoworkwithanorganizationthatreflects
yourinterests
5. Sharingyourknowledgewithothers
AdvisorExpectationsandResponsibilities
BelowisourlistofadvisorrolesandexpectationsforFloridaAtlanticUniversity.AlladvisorsatFAUare
requiredtoreviewtheserolesandexpectationswiththestudentorganizationpresidentduringthe
formationofanewRSOandeveryspringduringtheannualre-registrationprocess.
1. UnderstandUniversitypoliciesandregulationsrelatingtoregisteredstudentorganizations.Asan
advisor,youshouldbeawareofUniversityRegulation4.006,theStudentOrganizationManual,the
StudentUnionreservationspolicies,eventplanningpoliciesandprocedures,studenttravelpolicies,
andotherinstitutionalguidelinesthatestablishexpectationsforstudentbehaviorandactivities.
TheadvisoristheprimaryconnectinglinkbetweentheUniversityandtheorganization,andyouare
expectedtoassisttheofficersinfollowingallUniversityregulationsandpolicies.
2. Understandandbefamiliarwiththestudentorganization’sconstitution.NorbertDunkelandJohn
Schuh(1998)statethe“constitutionisthemostimportantorganizationaldocument.Itgivesthe
organizationandmembershippurpose,direction,andguidance…Thelanguageshouldbeclearand
concise,leavinglittletointerpretation.”StudentInvolvementrequiresallstudentorganizationsto
reviewtheirconstitutionsperiodicallyandmakeappropriatechangesasneeded.Anupdated
constitutionisrequiredannuallyduringre-registration,somakesureyoureceiveanupdatedcopy.
3. Meetregularlywiththeofficerstodiscussexpectationsforrolesandresponsibilities.Tostay
connectedwiththeorganization,youshouldregularlyattendexecutiveandgeneralmeetings.You
shouldalsobeavailableoutsideofthosemeetingsforadviceandconsultationrelatingtothe
operationsoftheorganization.
4. MakesureyouknowthestudentsinyourRSO.Leadershipchangesfrequently,sogettoknowthe
membersoftheorganization.StudentInvolvementrecommendsmeetingwiththegeneral
membershiponaconsistentbasistostaycurrentwiththemandtomakemembersawarethatyou
areavailabletothem.
5. Knowwhenthestudentorganizationmeets.Ifyoudon’tknowwhentheyaremeeting,chances
arethatpotentialnewmembersdon’teither.
6. Attendspecialevents.StudentInvolvementrequiresadvisorstobepresentatallspecialevents
hostedbythestudentorganization.Specialevents,definedaseventswithcriticalriskfactors,have
anyorallofthefollowingcriticalriskfactors:danceorconcert;heldat,orcontinuesuntilanytime
aftermidnight;moneyisexchanged(tickets,admissionoradonation);involve200peopleormore;

orareopentothegeneralpublic.
Assistwithprogramplanningandtravelplanning.Studentorganizationshavebigideasandneed
youradvice/resourcestomaketheireventssuccessful.Additionally,youwillneedtobeawareof
anytravelplanssothatyoucanassistwiththetravelplanningprocessrequiredbytheUniversity.
BeknowledgeableaboutyourroleasaCampusSecurityAuthority(CSA)inregardstotheClery
Act.AsaCSA,youareresponsibleforreportinganypotentialcriminalincidentinformationyou
receiveinatimelymanner.Formoreinformation,refertopage10ofthismanual.
Beknowledgeableaboutstudentorganizationfinancesandprocedures.Staycurrentaboutyour
organization’sfinances,soyouwillknowwhenanewideaisoutofscope,andwhatthegroupcan
financiallymanage.Inaddition,youshouldhavetheinformationforanyoff-campusaccountsused
todepositmoneyfromduesorfundraiserstohelpthegrouptransferfinancialleadershipyearto
year.Bystayingcurrent,youwillalsoknowwhenitistimefortheannualCOSOorGPSAbudgeting
process.
Motivatestudents/officers.DunkelandSchuh(1998)believethatmotivatingstudentsisoneofthe
(ifnotthe)mostdesirableskillsofanadvisor.Theysaythat“ifitisn’tevidenttoyoualready,you
willsoonfindinyourworkwithstudentsthatsomeofthemhavewhatappearstobeaninnate
desiretobecomeinvolved,workhard,andmakeadifferenceintheorganization.Conversely,some
studentsdonotseemtobeambitiousatall.Understandingtherangeofmotivatingfactorswill
enableyoutohelpindividualstudentstotakeonresponsibilitiesandbecomeinvolved.”
Celebrate/recognizetheofficersandthehardworktheyputintotheorganization.Recognizing
thehardworkofofficersisonewaytomotivatethemandevenothers.Asimplethankyouor
congratulationswillgofar.Studentsoftenwilltakeonadditionalresponsibilitiesortheinitiative
withaprojectwhentheyrealizethatothersnoticetheirhardwork.
Distinguishbetweenadvisingandsupervising.Thereisafinelinehere.Advisorsneedtobe
involved,butnottooinvolved.Makesureyouarenot“doing”thingsforthem.Studentsshould
ultimatelyberunningthegroup;yourgoalistoguide,direct,andsupportthem.Thatbeingsaid,
membersmustholdothermembersaccountableforgoalattainment.Whileyoumayguidethegoalsettinganddecisionmakingprocesses,theorganizationshouldbeaboutstudentleadership.

Advisorstostudentorganizationsacceptanaddedresponsibility.Thetypeofliabilityorriskvaries
greatlydependingonthesituation,sowerecommendthatadvisorshelptomanagerisksassociated
withtheirorganization’sactivities.Theriskoflawsuitsforastudentorganizationadvisorisusuallylow;
however,youarenotimmunefrombeingsued.Ingeneral,advisorsarenotliableforanorganization’s
actionsunlesstheyhadpriorknowledgeofthegroupbecominginvolvedinanillegalordangerous
activity,and/orcondonedorparticipatedinsuchactivity.
Youshouldtakeresponsibilityforquestioningthegroup’sactivitiesanddecisionsandvoice
disagreementwhenyouseeaproblem.Generally,youareexpectedtoactasa“reasonablyprudent
person”inyouractionsandinvolvementwiththestudentgroup.
Ifaquestionablesituationarises,theadvisorshoulddothefollowing:
• Tellyourorganization’sleadershipthatwhatitisdoing,orplanningtodo,iswrong,
inappropriate,and/orillegal.
• Offeralternativesuggestionsforactivitiesthatmaybelessrisky.
• Warnparticipantsoftherisksinvolved.(Usealiabilitywaiverorinformedconsentform.)
• Provideforproperinstruction,preparation,ortrainingforparticipantsinanactivity.
• Actonlywithinthescopeofyourauthority.(Donotsigncontracts,giveapprovalforactivities,
orspeakonbehalfoftheUniversityunlessyouhavebeengivenexplicitauthoritytodoso.)
• Canceltheeventiftheconditionsaredangerousorifthegroupisnotpreparedtoassumefull
responsibilityfortheriskinvolved.

Althoughitisnotnecessary,youalsohavetheoptiontopurchasespecificinsurancethatcoversyour
dutiesasanadvisor.Manyprofessionalassociationsofferthiskindofinsuranceforamodestpremium.
Ifyoubelongtoanyprofessionalassociations,inquireabouttheirinsurancepolicies.Youaremostlikely
todecreaseyourliabilityandchanceofaneventgoingawrythroughgoodriskmanagement.
Herearesomehelpfulstrategiesyoucanprocesswithyourorganizationtoreducerisk:
• Provideadequatetrainingandsupervisionofstudentorganizationmembers.
• Chooseonlytoparticipateinactivitiesthatarelowrisk.
• Followindustrystandardsiftheyareavailable.
• Assumeandpreparefora“worstcasescenario”inordertoreducethelikelihoodofitoccurring.
• Uselicensedcommercialtransportationinsteadofpersonalvehicleswhenpossible.
• Purchaseeventliabilityinsuranceifapplicable.
• Obtaininformedconsentformsorliabilitywaiversforparticipantsatyourevent.
Hazing
RegisteredStudentOrganizationsandtheiradvisorsareexpectedtoadheretoandabidebytheantihazingpolicyintheFAUStudentCodeofConduct:
“Hazingisprohibited.Nostudentorstudentorganizationshallconduct,engagein,orcondonehazing
activities.Thispolicyshallapplytoactsconductedonoroffcampuswheneversuchactsaredeemedto
constituteHazing.
Hazingmeansanyactionorsituationthatrecklesslyorintentionallyendangersthementalorphysical
healthorsafetyofastudentforpurposesincluding,butnotlimitedto,initiationoradmissionintoor
affiliationwithanyorganizationoperatingunderthesanctionofFloridaAtlanticUniversity.
Additionally,Hazingincludes,butisnotlimitedto,pressuringorcoercingthestudentintoviolating
stateorfederallaw,anybrutalityofaphysicalnature,suchaswhipping,beating,branding,exposureto
theelements,forcedconsumptionofanyfood,liquor,drug,orothersubstance,orotherforced
physicalactivitythatcouldadverselyaffectthephysicalhealthorsafetyofthestudent,andalso
includesanyactivitythatwouldsubjectthestudenttoextremementalstress,suchassleepdeprivation,
forcedexclusionfromsocialcontact,forcedconductthatcouldresultinextremeembarrassment,or
otherforcedactivitythatcouldadverselyaffectthementalhealthordignityofthestudent.Hazingdoes
notincludecustomaryathleticeventsorothersimilarcontestsorcompetitionsoranyactivityor
conductthatfurthersalegalandlegitimateobjective.
Itisnotadefensetoachargeofhazingthat:
1. Theconsentofthevictimhadbeenobtained;or
2. Theconductoractivitywasnotpartofanofficialorganizationaleventorwasnototherwise
sanctionedorapprovedbytheorganization;or
3. Theconductoractivitywasnotdoneasaconditionofmembershiptoanorganization.”

AdvisorstoRegisteredStudentOrganizationshelpenforcetheJeanCleryAct.Accordingtofederallaw,
specificallyTheStudentRighttoKnowandCampusSecurityActof1990(renamedtheCleryAct),Florida
AtlanticUniversityisrequiredtoreport“statisticsconcerningtheoccurrenceofcertaincriminaloffenses
reportedtothelocalpoliceagencyoranyofficialoftheinstitutionwhoisdefinedasa“CampusSecurity

Authority.”ACampusSecurityAuthority(CSA)isdefinedas:“Anofficialofaninstitutionwhohas
significantresponsibilityforstudentandcampusactivities,including,butnotlimitedto,student
housing,studentdiscipline,andcampusjudicialproceedings.”
Accordingtothisdefinition,advisorstostudentorganizationsareCSAsbecauseyouareinvolvedin
campusactivitiesandinteractwithstudentsfrequently.AsadesignatedCSA,youarenotconsidered
eitherasecurityofficerorlawenforcementofficial.YourroleasaCSAmerelyinvolvestheprocessof
reportinganypotentialcriminalincidentinformationyoureceiveinatimelymanner.
IfyouhearaboutacrimethatwascommittedoncampusoronapropertyleasedbyFAU,itisyour
responsibilitytoimmediatelyreportitviatheIncidentReportingFormontheDeanofStudentswebsite.
Youshouldcollectasmuchinformationaboutthecrimeaspossiblesothatyoucanfilltheform
completely.Thecrime’stypeandlocationareespeciallyimportant.
ThisformshouldalsobeusedforStudentCodeofConductviolations,toreportastudentwhoyoufeel
maybestrugglingphysicallyorpsychologically,ortoreportanyotherbehaviorsofconcern.
Dependingontheseverityoftheincident,theFAUPoliceDepartmentmayneedtorespondquicklyto
maintainthesafetyofourcampus.Therefore,itiscriticalthatyousubmitincidentreportsare
submittedassoonaspossiblewhenyouhearaboutacrime.

RegisteredStudentOrganizations
ResponsibilitiesandPolicies
Regulation4.006
Regulation4.006isaUniversityregulationforStudentOrganizationsandStudentGovernment.It
outlinestheformationandre-registrationprocessforstudentorganizationsaswellastheofficer
eligibilityrequirements.Asstatedintheregulation,allregisteredstudentorganizationsarerequiredto
re-registertheirorganizationannuallyeachspringtoremainaregisteredforthefollowingacademic
year.Newstudentorganizationformationcanoccurwithinthefirstsixweeksofeachsemester(Fall,
Spring,andSummer.)
Foranundergraduatestudenttoholdanofficerpositionwithinhisorherorganization,he/shemust
maintainacumulativeGPAof2.5andmustbeenrolledin12creditsinthefallandspring.Foragraduate
studenttoholdanofficerposition,he/shemustmaintainaGPAof3.25andbeenrolledin6creditsin
thefallandspring.Eligibilitychecksaremadewithinthefirsttwoweeksofeachsemester,andan
appealprocessisavailabletointerestedstudents.

Re-RegistrationProcess
RegisteredStudentOrganizationsneedtore-registerannuallyeachspringtoremainarecognizedand
activeorganizationatFAU.Theintentofre-registrationistoensurethattheUniversityhasaccurate
contactinformationforeachgroup.Belowaretherequirementsforre-registrationfor2015-2016:

isveryhelpfulandeagertoassistinplanningevents.TheStudentUnionEventPlanningofficeoffers
servicesincluding,butnotlimitedto:venuereservation,eventreview,coordinatingsoundandlight
personnelandequipment,furnishingandarrangingofroomsetupsandcoordinatingeventstaffand
UniversityPolicewhereindicated.Shouldyouneedassistancewiththeeventplanningprocess,please

ThefirststepincompletinganeventregistrationistosubmittheeventrequestonOwlCentral.The
“CreateEvent”buttonisfoundonthestudentorganization’spage,underthe“Events”tab.Thisbutton
willonlybevisibletoofficersoftheorganizationwhohavebeenauthorizedtosubmitevents.Itis
importanttonotethattheeventrequestissimplyarequestforspaceandnotaguarantee.Thecampus
eventservicesstaffintheStudentUnionwillworkwithyourorganizationtofindaspacefortheeventif
therequestedvenueisunavailable.Theeventregistrationwilltakestudentsthroughseveralquestions
abouttheireventtodeterminewhichpoliciesareapplicable.Theeventwillbeapprovedafterall

with200peopleormore;oreventsopentothegeneralpublic.

Contracts
Ifyourstudentorganizationisplanningtobringentertainmenttocampus(e.g.,DJ,musician,speaker,
comedian,lecturer,etc.),acontractmustbeprocessed.TheStudentActivitiesandInvolvementoffice
onyourcampuswillassistintheprocessingofthiscontractforyou.Contractsmustbeprocessedat
leastfourweeksinadvanceofanevent.Tobeginthisprocess,pleasecompletetheContractWorksheet
foundunder“CampusLinks”onOwlCentral.Nostudent,studentorganizationorstudentorganization
advisorcansigncontractsonbehalfofFAU.
COSOFunding
RegisteredStudentOrganizationsareeligibleforfundingthroughtheCouncilofStudentOrganizations
(COSO)throughtheAnnualBudgetProcessandEmergencyFunding.

Emergencyfundingisdefinedasmoniesallocatedforcircumstancesthatarebeyondthescopeand/or
controloftheregisteredorganization.Examplesincludeunexpectedsecuritycostsrelatedtoaprogram
thathasalreadybeenbudgetedthroughtheannualbudgetingprocess,oranorganizationthatwasnot
fundedduetothepreviousofficer’snegligence.
• Organizationsthatareregisteredaftertheannualbudgetingprocessarenoteligiblefor
emergencyfunding.
• Emergencyfundingrequestsareduetwobusinessdaysbeforethefundingmeetingwithall
justificationattached.
• Eachorganizationrequestingfundsmustattendthefundingmeetinginordertobeallocated
funds.
• TheorganizationrequestingfundsshallbegrantedtimetomakeastatementtotheExecutive
Board,andansweranyquestionstheboarddeemsnecessary.
• TheExecutiveBoardwillthenproceedtovoteonanamounttoallocatetheorganization.

Fundraising
Fundraisingisagreatwayforstudentorganizationstoraisemoneyfortheirorganizationorforcharity.
Additionally,fundraisingcanhelpinformthecommunityaboutyourorganizationanditspurpose.
Asuccessfulstudentorganizationfundraiserwilltypically:
• Appealtoalarge,broadaudience.
• Performaneededserviceormeetaneed.
• Bewell-publicizedthroughvariousmedia.
• Bringtheorganizationandthecommunitytogether.
• Encouragepeopletointeract.
• Capitalizeonthetalentsofyourorganization.
FAURegisteredStudentOrganizations(RSO)mayengageinfundraisingactivitiesundercertain
circumstances.AnyproceedsofthesefundraisingactivitiesmustbedonatedtoanIRS-qualified
organization(suchasaSection501(c)(3)charitableorganization)orusedfortheactivitiesandprojects
oftheRSOitself,infurtheranceofitsgoalsandobjectives.AllfundraisingactivitiesbyanRSOonoroff
campusaresubjecttothefollowingguidelines:
GeneralFundraisingGuidelines:
1) AllRSOswantingtofundraisemustobtainapprovalfromboththeiradvisorandtheAssistant
DirectorofStudentOrganizationsandActivities.Thisapprovalprocessisaccomplishedthrough
theonlineeventregistrationsubmissionprocessthroughOwlCentral.
2) RSOsmaynotsolicittaxdeductibledonationsorissuegiftreceiptstodonorsforthededuction
ofsuchdonations.ContributionsaredeductibleonlywhenmadetoIRSqualifiedorganizations,
andmost(ifnotall)RSOshavenotappliedtotheIRStobecomeaqualifiedorganization.
3) AllfundraisingactivitiesthatinvolvetheexchangeofmoneymusthavetheRSOadvisorin
attendance.
4) Allfundraisingactivitiesandmerchandisesalesthatarepartofsuchfundraisingactivitiesmust
conformtoUniversityregulationsandpoliciesandFloridaandPalmBeachCountyordinances
andlaws.Forexample,rafflesarerestrictedbystatelaw(seeFloridaStatute,Section849.0935),
anddate/serviceauctionsarelimitedbyUniversitypolicy(seeGuidelinesforDate/Service
Auctions).Additionally,thefollowingactivitiesarenotpermittedonFAU’scampuses:bake
sales,carbashes,electronicbashes,eating/drinkingcontests,rafflesorgambling.
5) SalesofmerchandisethatarepartoffundraisingactivitiesonFAUcampusesmaynotconflict
withorviolateUniversitycontractswithexistingcampusvendors.RSOsmaynotuseA&Sfeesto
fundraiseforthebenefitoftheirorganizationoranycharitableorganization.AllRSOswantingto
holdafundraiserthatrequiresanyfinancialexpendituremusthavesufficientnon-A&Sfundsto
covertheseexpenses.
6) Moniesraisedand/orcollectedfromRSOfundraisingactivitiesmustbedepositedintothe
appropriateRSOoff-campusbankaccountwithin72businesshoursaftercompletionofthe
fundraisingactivity.Anychecksreceivedaspartofthefundraisingactivitymayonlybemade
outtotheRSOorthecharitableorganizationforwhichthefundraiserisheld.

7) Nofundraisingactivitieswillbeallowedforthefinancialgainofindividual(s)outsideofthe
commonorcharitableinterestsoftheRSOorthecharitableorganizationforwhichthe
fundraiserisheld.
8) TheRSOmustuseatwo-partrevenue/receiptbookwhencollectingfundsforthesaleof
merchandise(atwo-partreceiptbookwillbeprovidedbyStudentInvolvementorCOSO).A
receiptshouldbewritten,withacopygiventothepurchaserofthemerchandiseandacopy
keptbytheRSO.ThereceiptsshouldbekeptonfilebythetreasureroftheRSOforaminimum
offour(4)yearsforauditingpurposes.
9) TheRSOmusthaveacollectionboxorbankbagwithalockonsitetostorethecollectedfunds.
10) Atthelocationofthefundraiser,theRSOmustpostinavisiblelocationthefundraising
disclaimer(seebelow).
Disclaimer:Thisfundraisingevent,andanyorganizationsinvolved,donotrepresentFlorida

13) ViolationbyanRSOofanyUniversityregulation,policy,rule,orprocedurewhileconductingthe
fundraisingactivitymayresultinalossofRSOprivilegesorothermeasuresdeemed
appropriate.
Off-CampusBankAccounts
RSOsareabletoopenanoff-campusbankaccountforself-generatedfunds.Thisaccountisprimarily
usedformoneyyourRSOraisesthroughfundraisingandmembershipdues.Itishighlyrecommended
thatyou,astheadvisor,areinvolvedintheprocessofcreatinganoff-campusbankaccount.
Yourorganizationisresponsibleforkeepingtrackoftheaccount.BB&T,ouron-campusbanking
provider,iswillingtoworkwithyourorganization,butyoumaychooseanybankthatyouwouldlike.It
isimportanttounderstandthatStudentInvolvementhasabsolutelynojurisdictionover,orinvolvement
with,off-campusbankaccountsandwillnotgetinvolvedinmattersconcerningoff-campusbank

officer(orcreateanewone).

ConflictResolutionandStrategies
Asanadvisor,youcanhelpthestudentorganizationdealwithconflictinpositiveways.Studentscome
fromdifferentbackgrounds,havedifferentleadershipstyles,andoperatewithdifferentperceptions;
therefore,itisimportantthatgroupmembersidentifyandworkthroughproblemstobalancethe
group.
Herearesometipstohelpwithmanagingconflictwithinyourstudentorganization:
1. Analyzetheconflict:Identifythenatureandtypeofconflictthegroupisdealingwith.
2. Onceyouhaveageneralunderstandingoftheconflict,determinethestrategytobeusedand
withwhomtheywillbeworking.
a. Ifyouareworkingwith“Avoiders,”lettensionscoolandthendiscuss.
b. Ifyouareworkingwith“Accommodators,”bereasonable.
c. Ifyouareworkingwith“Competitors,”talkaboutstandardsandexpectations.
d. Ifyouareworkingwith“Collaborators,”solvejointproblems.
e. Ifyouareworkingwith“Cooperators,”workonequalground.
3. Workoutproblemsinsmallgroupsbeforetheentireorganizationgetsinvolved.Sometimesthe
officerscandiscusstheirperspectivesandgivedirectiontofollow.
4. Alwaystaketimetodealwithconflict–evensmallproblemscanleadtoanexplosionthathurts
theentireorganization.
5. Asanadvisor,youmustbalancenegativecommentswithpositiveonessothatthegroup
continuescomingtoyouforadvice.

MotivatingStudents
Astudentmaybemotivatedbyavarietyoffactors,andnoformofmotivationwillbe100%effective.
Thefollowingisalistofdifferentformsofmotivation.Someoftheexamplesareextrinsic(motivation
comingfromanoutsidesource)whileothersareintrinsic(motivationthatstemsfromtheinternal
desireorgoalofthestudent).
Recognition:
Recognitionisusedfrequentlybyadvisors.Recognizeamember’scontributionverballyorinprint,in
frontoftheorganizationoralone.Thisisaneasyandeffectivewaytomotivatesomeone.Almost
everybodyappreciatesa“Thankyou!”orrecognitionofajobwelldone.Alsonotewhoenjoyspublic
andprivaterecognition.
Achievement:
Astudentmotivatedbytheneedforachievementmayhaveatendencytoovercomeobstacles,to
exercisepower,ortostrivetodosomethingdifficultaswellandasquicklyaspossible.Achievementis

oftentiedtopositiverecognitionfromoutsidesources.Inafewcases,therecanbeaninternaldesire
forachievement,sothepersonwouldbesatisfiedbycompletingatasktothebestofhis/herability.
Desire:
Somestudentsareinterestedinbecomingmembersoforganizationsororganizationsthatwillleadtoa
desirableoutcome.So,iftheoutcomeoforganizationactivityisknowntobedesirable,thestudentmay
bemorelikelytoparticipate.
Value:
Ifthestudentperceivesvalueinparticipation,he/shemaybemoremotivatedtoparticipate(friendship,
professionalgoals,personalinterests,etc.).
PeerApproval:
Astudentcanperceiveapprovalandmaybemorelikelytoparticipateifprovidedwithappropriate
recognition.
Caution:
Therearesomestudentswhojoinorganizationstogainapproval/acceptancefromtheirpeerstocover
uppersonalissues.Watchforstudentswhoarestrugglingwithself-confidenceorwhostopshowingup.
