It’s a really fantastic time of year, with the weather getting warmer and daylight saving giving us long days and extra time to do outdoor activities after work. The good news is that consumer confidence is slowly starting to increase, which will hopefully mean an even stronger trading season for retailers across the city. The Whitehorse Business Group is gearing up for the Christmas season, and we ask everybody to mark in their diary the Christmas Networking Event, which will be held on Wednesday December 7th and will be a great opportunity to meet and greet your fellow members before the holidays. The Whitehorse Business Group is always looking for ways to expand our networking opportunities, present new and interesting speakers and provide information and events WHITE HORSE BUSINESS GROUP INCORPORATED that are relevant to our members. MEET the board Amanda Paterson Amanda is one of the newer members of the Whitehorse Business Group Board, joining in November last year. She is a manager at BBQsR-US in Mitcham, a family business started by her father over 30 years ago. Amanda has experience working for large government organisations as well as small business, and has a degree in Media and Communications from the University of Melbourne. She believes the Whitehorse Business Group is a really important forum for the business community, and finds it interesting to hear the viewpoints of other group members who come from such varied business backgrounds – from her fellow small business owners to larger corporations and everything in-between. There is such a depth of experience and knowledge held by the Whitehorse Business Group membership base, and Amanda feels it is very important for these businesses to continually network with one another and to learn from the experience of others. When she isn’t working, Amanda enjoys various sporting activities such as tennis, horse-riding or walking her dogs. She also loves to travel, and has visited many countries Photography: Life Through a Lens Photography www.lifethroughalens.com.au – including a year spent in China teaching English. Most of all she loves helping her family business grow and develop, and this year has enjoyed developing a new e-commerce site and witnessing the continued growth and importance of the internet and e-commerce in business. Gab Clements wrapping prizes for the Mask Festival previous Event: MEN’S HEALTH LUNCH There is a show on ABC1 called Doc Martin. In a recent episode, the doctor was asked to deliver a speech at a funeral. Instead of the normal eulogising, his speech went something like this: “she died because she was overweight. She refused to accept that a bad diet and no exercise could kill her.” His audience was left silent and stunned after this lecture. Luckily, this wasn’t the case at the recent Men’s Health Lunch, where the same message was strongly repeated by guest speaker Doctor Peter Larkins. Dr. Larkins passionately discussed the impact of a bad diet and the lack of exercise on a person’s health. Using well known and wealthy individuals as an example, Dr Larkins discussed how success in life is as much to do with maintaining health as accumulating wealth. Dr. Larkins’ key message was that fit people are healthier, live longer, live better and can achieve more success at work and at home due to higher energy levels. Dr. Larkins presented some alarming statistics, including that 40% of the population is completely inactive – they don’t even walk their dog - and that over 60% of the population is overweight. During the presentation, Dr. Larkins discussed the rising levels of cardiovascular disease and obesity and remarked how Australia is now one of the most overweight populations in the world. He also discussed how our 21st Century lifestyle is impacting on our health, with people spending more time in offices and on computers and therefore not expending as much energy as they consume. The key message of the presentation was the importance of a fit and healthy lifestyle; what we eat, how often we engage in physical activity and how we control our stress levels can have an enormous impact on our quality of life. We were also very fortunate to welcome Dr. Paul Ruljancich Dr. Peter Larkins with WHBG Vice-Chair Ross Mitchell Dr. Paul Ruljancich to the lunch. Dr. Ruljancich is a Urologist, meaning he specialises in urinary tract systems and also the male reproductive system. His discussion was based around the risk of prostate cancer, and particularly how in many cases the diagnosis could have been made earlier if the patient had recognised some of the symptoms. Unfortunately there are not a lot of symptoms for prostate cancer, however Dr. Ruljancich did provide a list of things to look out for – including frequent urination and particularly frequent urination at night. Primary risk factors are age and family history, with the disease uncommon in men under the age of 45. Dr. Ruljancich encouraged men with a family history of prostate cancer to undergo regular check-ups. Both presentations were very informative, and we were lucky that both speakers were able to deliver their information in such an interesting and interactive manner. It was perhaps ironic that it was delivered whilst we all enjoyed a delicious 3-course meal (including dessert), however it was a very interesting presentation and there is no doubt many people left with the intention to take on board Dr. Larkins and Dr. Ruljancich’s extremely good advice.
