Plumbing and Heating
Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes for people of all ages. Tailor made
courses offer opportunities for businesses and individuals by developing and enhancing
industry skills.
Most training elements are undertaken at the employers’ places of work, where practical
skills are learned first-hand, supervised by experienced professionals. Additional training is
supported through local colleges and training providers.
Apprenticeships last between one and four years and there are two types available
(depending upon skills and qualifications to date). These are: Intermediate (level 2) and
Advanced (level 3).

The Course
The Course
This course is relevant to employment in the
plumbing and construction industry.
This course is relevant to employment in the
construction industry for individuals who have
previously completed a Level 2 qualification in this
trade.
Content
The candidate and employer can choose a selection
of units to best fit the business and job role. The units
include: safe working practices; environmental
protection; scientific principles; cold water supply; hot
water supply; central heating; rainwater systems and
above ground drainage.
Qualifications & Assessment
Apprentices will work towards the following
qualifications:
• NVQ Diploma Level 2 in Plumbing & Heating
(practical)
• Technical Certificate in Plumbing & Heating –
Level 2
• Functional Skills Level 1 in English and Maths
• Employment Rights and Responsibilities
Study & Employment
Apprentices must be employed for a minimum of 30
hours per week and must be paid a minimum of
£2.65 per hour in accordance with the national
Apprenticeship wage. Apprentices will spend 1 day
per week at College and receive regular visits from
their assessor.

Content
There are a large number of units to choose from
including: complex cold water systems; complex hot
water systems; unvented hot water systems; central
heating; complex sanitation; Gas 1; Gas 2; system
planning; improving business and a choice of generic
units across the construction industry.
