Software Interns 2017
We are currently searching for exceptional students who want to swap their summer break for 9 weeks
(or ideally more!) of hands-on engineering experience in a unique software company in Cambridge.
The company
As the original inventors of VNC technology, you’ve probably heard of us already. Alternatively, you may already
be one of our 100,000,000+ users, who rely on VNC for remote access via your computer, smart-phone or
tablet. Although RealVNC is now a hugely successful global brand, our origin is still important to us - we are
proud to remain as a Cambridge company grown out of the Computer Lab.
We’ve had another great year at RealVNC as we have continued to expand both our global customer base
and product range, most recently we introduced the new VNC Connect subscription-based product for both
home and commercial use. Through VNC Developer, we are unique in offering our VNC SDK to embed remote
control and access capability into third-party smart IoT products to enable a supreme support service, and
this side of the business is really taking off! Our VNC Automotive offering is already in production with many
established automotive manufacturers (including VW, Peugeot and more), available through 6 million cars and
100 million mobile devices, and growing!
With this success to build on and so many exciting projects in the pipeline, we can’t wait for 2017!
The role
If you are expecting a summer of photocopying and making tea, then think again. . .
From your very first day as an intern, you will become part of real projects, working alongside our talented,
experienced engineers to develop real world applications. You will be using the knowledge gained from your
degree to work on new product innovations and bespoke customer projects.
Aside from work at RealVNC, we also try to encourage a great atmosphere in the office. From cake day Fridays
to champagne celebrations, we boast a relaxed and friendly environment where collaboration is key. As an
intern, you’ll be invited to our company events and celebrations - last year our interns enjoyed a team building
day out at Cambridge Escape Rooms, as well as a garden barbeque for our summer party!
If this sounds like it could be for you, we have lots of opportunities available, each designed to provide a
unique challenge in a friendly and close-knit team. These opportunities include:
Mobile Applications Developer – Help us improve our range of elegant, high performance VNC Viewers for
iOS, Android and Google Chrome. The core of each viewer is written in cross platform C++ whilst exploiting
the native UI layer on each platform to provide a compelling user experience. You will also get a chance to play
with cutting edge devices, porting our viewers to new platforms and exploring ways to improve interactions
with these devices.
Mobile Developer – Working on our technology to control phones from car screens, you’ll be doing real
customer projects from the outset. RealVNC is a core member of the Car Connectivity Consortium who
develop and maintain the MirrorLink standard, based on VNC’s open standard protocol. As part of the mobile
team, you will be certain to ensure your work reaches millions of people in exciting use cases that your friends
and family will understand.
Software Engineer (Enterprise) – Help us improve our core VNC product, with opportunities to work on both
the VNC Server and VNC Viewer applications for Windows, Linux, UNIX and Mac OS X. The majority of each
application is written in cross-platform C++, so you’ll need some experience of that. We are always looking to
add new features and improvements to these products that make a significant impact for our customers, as
well as looking ahead to supporting upcoming platforms and their latest features too.
Software Test Engineer – Do you have an inquisitive mind with a passion for solving puzzles and problems? If
so, this role may be perfect for you! Working with our team of talented Testers, you’ll have the opportunity to
run tests and write programs to try and break our software. . . are you up for the challenge?
Web Developer – Working in a small team on applications that support both company sales and our corporate
website, you will be developing Python-based web applications for both internal and external use.
