 Barbados was settled around 1623. Its
natives at the time were two
Amerindians tribes - the Arawaks and
the Caribs.
 On Nov 30th 1966 Errol Walton Barrow
led Barbados into Independence and
became our first Prime Minister.
 Barbados is 21 miles long, 14 miles
wide and 166 square miles. Its capital
city is Bridgetown and its population is
approximately 285,000 people.
 Sugar was Barbados main industry
until the 1970’s. Over the years, the
number of sugar factories has gone
from twenty-six to a mere two. Those
two being Andrews Sugar Factory in St.
Joseph and Portvale Sugar Factory in
St. James.
 Sir Errol Walton Barrow led the way
in providing free secondary
education in 1962.
 The educational system in
Barbados has four levels: Nursery ages 3 to 5; Primary - ages 5 to 11;
Secondary - ages 11 to 16 and
Tertiary - any age after secondary.
 Education is compulsory for
children between 5 to 16 years.
 The first Minister of Education after
independence was the Hon.
Cameron Tudor. He was followed
by the Hon. Llyod Erskine
Sandiford.
 Cricket was first played in Barbados
by British soldiers stationed here in
the 1800’s.
 Village cricket has been played on
roads, pastures and the beach with
rubber strand balls, soft balls and
taped balls.
 Barbados won 12 out of the first 20
Shell Shield tournaments with five
straight winning seasons between
1975 and 1980.
 Some Great Barbadian cricketers
include Sir Garfield Sobers - the
greatest in the world, the 3 Ws
(Weekes, Worrell and Walcott) the
opening pair Greenidge and Haynes
and pacers Wes Hall, Joel Garner
and Malcolm Marshall.

 Barbados’ National Anthem was
written by Mr. Irving Burgie and
composed by Mr. Roland Edwards.
 The flag was designed by Mr. Grantley
Prescod. The blue represents the sea
and sky, the gold - the sand, and the
broken trident - Barbados breaking
away from Britain.
 The Coat of Arms was designed by Mr.
Neville Connell and the National
Pledge was written by Mr. Lester
Vaughan in 1973.

(BFA) celebrated its 100th
anniversary in 2010.

17,000 males and females playing

 In 1985, the Emancipation Statue
called “Bussa” was unveiled to honor
the 150th anniversary of emancipation
and to symbolize the broken chains of
slavery.
 The Independence Arch was built in
1987 in recognition of 21 years of
independence.
 The most popular festival in Barbados
is the Crop Over festival occurring from
May to August.
 The National Independence Festival of
Creative Arts (NIFCA) began in
November 1973

started in 1970 and students in
some classrooms watched lessons
taught on TV.
 The Samuel Jackman Prescod
Polytechnic (SJPP) was officially
opened in 1970.
 The Caribbean Examinations
Council (CXC), replaced the General

 In 1974 the School Meals Centre at
Country Road was officially opened.
Students got Milk and Biscuits at
break and a hot meal at lunch for
ten cents.
 Road tennis was invented in
Barbados in the 1930s and is
mostly played on roads and
pavements.
 The equipment consists of an 8
inch wooden net, a bald tennis ball
and wooden racket. The court is
21ft by 10ft.
 On January 11th 2012 Road Tennis
was featured on CNN.
 The major tournament is the World
Road Tennis Series in November
and Mark “Venom” Griffith
defeated Michael “Jackson” in 2015
to become the reigning champion.
