Sholom's values
include enriching the
lives of residents by
providing an environment where residents, regardless
of age, can stimulate their mind, their

of Bentson Family

can read their story
on page 10.

Dear Sholom Community,
During the past two years, I was repeatedly
asked two questions: what motivated me to
serve as Board President and what have I
enjoyed the most from the experience. For
those who have asked (and for those who have
not), the answers lie in this Annual Report—so
keep reading until you reach the last page. This
year’s Annual Report includes three inspiring
stories that highlight the essence of Sholom
and the impact that individuals can have on
the residents of Sholom.
As you will see from reading the articles,
the mission of Sholom goes well beyond caring for the seniors in our community. Sholom’s
values include enriching the lives of residents
by providing an environment where residents,
SHOLOM
regardless of age, can stimulate their mind,
their body, and their spirit. Living up to these
values takes many dedicated individuals like
Evie Shore and Bryce Beinke whose contributions and efforts are described in detail in the
next few pages and for whom we should all be
grateful. But individuals alone are not enough,
as evidenced by the Sholom Auxilliary’s sponsorship of the Live 2B Healthy® Senior Fitness
Program that Bryce leads.
Sholom and our community have so
much to be proud of—the employees who provide outstanding care to our residents, our
facilities, our programs and activities, and
most importantly, the organization’s commitment to the residents and their families. It has truly been a privilege to work with
Sholom’s exceptional management team and
dedicated staff as well as the lay leadership
of the organization and the broader community to shape and fulfill Sholom’s mission.
I have grown personally and professionally
from the experience and for that I am grateful.
On behalf of the entire Sholom organization, I thank each of you and all of you for your
support.

E
very step we take at Sholom is intended to
enrich people’s lives. Sholom cares. Sholom
has a purpose of meeting the needs of people because every individual is valued. We believe
in each person’s well-being and through the good
deeds of Sholom, we embrace the guiding tradition
of honoring our fathers and mothers.
Energy, enthusiasm, and exceptional promise is
reflected in the over 1,000 residents, patients, and
clients that Sholom touches daily. We could not
honor this promise without the dedication of our
over 950 professional staff, and our families, volunteers, boards, committees, and Auxiliary.
This annual report features some examples of
Sholom’s residents and programs. We are proud to
introduce you to Evie Shore. Evie began the awardwinning education program in 2005 for residents
that offers classes in a variety of subjects, history,
art, poetry, and other wide-ranging themes (see
page four and visit our Sholom Website). I believe
that Evie recognizes that life is a school and we are
here to learn. All of the daily problems that we
each encounter are simply part of the curriculum
that appear and fade away, like algebra class, but
the lessons we learn will last a lifetime.
The Sholom Auxiliary, full of vigor, energy and
enthusiasm, sponsors a “Live 2 B Healthy®” exercise program at our Roitenberg Family Assisted
Living (see page six and visit our Sholom Website).
This program is the ultimate antidepressant.
It makes people smile, and puts them in charge of
their happiness, while giving vitality to each person
who shares in the experience. And as featured on
the cover of this report, we share with you a married couple of 63 years, the Warrens, who reside
here at our Bentson Family Assisted Living residence, who personify the “spirit” of Sholom.
These three stories encapsulate just some of
the ways that Sholom brings benefits and joy to
our community. Sholom offers the enviroment for
people to continue to accomplish and fulfill their
lives; to continue to grow mentally, physically, and
spiritually.
Sincerely,
Ben Laub

"Evelyn SHORE"
RECIPIENT OF
THE PRESTIGIOUS
MInd
S PIRIT of
Aging Award
4
2013
Founder of
the Academy
At Sholom
A
ging Services of Minnesota honored Evie
Shore, age 87, with its
prestigious “2013 Spirit of Aging
Award” during its 2013 Institute
and Meeting in early February.
Evelyn “Evie” Shore, a resident of
Sholom’s Knollwood Place Apartments on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus in St.
Louis Park, introduced Sholom
residents to a whole new world of
learning when she founded The
Academy at Sholom in 2005.
Evie, a retired teacher and M.A., moved
from Boston to become a Sholom resident eight years ago. Since then, she
made it her mission to research learning and brain health, and found that
older adults are more engaged, and
healthier in both mind and body when
they continue learning.
Armed with copious research, and
encouragement from the administration
of Sholom to develop her idea, Evie set
out to amass a large library full of videos
on topics ranging from art and anti-Semitism to Zanzibar and zoology. She created detailed program notes from which
a spirited discussion could ensue after
viewing a 30-minute session.
Evie’s curriculum includes courses
from history and current events to reading books and writing magazine articles.
According to one Sholom resident
and student of The Academy, “I had no
idea I could write. But I found that I
can write, and it has brought joy to my
life.”
The program has now been ex
panded to the Shaller Family Sholom
East Campus in St. Paul, and an “At
Your Service Manual” outlines a program that could be replicated by other
organizations.
Evie believed in the uncommon
truth that anyone—even the elderly—can
learn new things, stimulate the growth
of brain cells, and therefore hold at bay
the hitherto-believed inevitable deterioration of memory. In so doing, society
would benefit by not having its caregiver resources drained of time, money,
and energy. Not only that, but the time
left to each senior would also be a lot
more fun and exciting!
As we age, our brains deteriorate
for many reasons, including disuse
and natural processes. Every year, the
brain’s production of neuro-modulators—key brain chemicals for learning
and remembering—drops sharply. The
resulting memory loss is compoundedby negative learning behaviors. We
start to make lists. The hazier things
get, the harder the brain has to work
to process them.
An active center for lifelong learning, The Academy at Sholom was created to ensure that the residents of
Sholom campuses would have access to
well thought-out, high-quality and challenging educational choices.
Brain aging and the associated
diseases are major public health
problems, the significance of which is
estimated to grow markedly in the foreseeable future. The Academy at Sholom
works to enhance brain activity and
reduce these signs of aging.
"
“I have found that the variety of programs offered by the ACADEMY has
given me something to look forward to
almost every day,
and I learn something new each time
I attend a class.”

“Evelyn is a real visionary who has
established a wonderful educational
program at our Ackerberg Campus.
Through extraordinary effort, she truly
is the principal who coordinates and
directs a wide number of classes that are
actively consumed by our seniors. She
and her fellow students dispel the myth
that seniors only want to schmooze and
play bingo. This is a vibrant and fastpaced learning program that many of
our tenants have embraced.”

in his ear lobes, long sleeves hiding
tattoos and hailing from a family of
Marines and bikers, but his enthusiasm and humor puts everyone at ease.
He knows what he’s doing, having
trained athletes for the U. S. Special
Olympics as well as working as an inhome trainer.
On this day, the men have been
drawn away by other activities so all
of the attendees are women in their
80s and 90s. But one spry 101-year-old
named Sylvia Levitov is there to show
them how it’s done. She never misses a
class and the staff mentioned they had
never seen her smile so much as when
she’s working out with Bryce. When
asked the secret of how she has made
it to nearly 102, her reply is, “Exercise!
Exercise! Kicking! Moving! I’m not
exaggerating. Put that in the paper!”
Bryce gets the ladies stretching and
rolling their heads and shoulders back
to residents to live with more
vitality and enjoyment.
Left: Margaret Corcoran uses the
resistance of the elastic bands to
strengthen leg muscles.
With this focus on quality living, the
Sholom Auxiliary agreed that this
would be an excellent program to support and with money raised from their
annual Food For Your Soul fundraiser,
enabled Sholom to begin offering Live
2 B Healthy® Senior Fitness classes
since January 2013. Live 2 B Healthy®
Senior Fitness (L2BH) offers on-site
fitness to many senior residences.
Working with residents of all shapes
and ability levels, the L2BH Senior
Fitness Team has witnessed miraculous social and physical benefits for
elder care residents.
Instructor Bryce has been doing
this since 2009. He’s an unlikely

and forth. Next comes arm stretches
using elastic exercise bands.
“3...4, keep pulling your arms
wider. See if you can stretch them
even wider. What number are we
on? Nine?! I turn my back and you’re
cheating!” Bryce teases. “Just for that
you have to hold that position for the
whole hour!” Everyone laughs.
The presence of photographer
David Sherman has caught everyone by surprise and Renee HornbergGlassman pulls me aside to ask if I
have any lipstick she can borrow. (“I
want a picture for my kids!”) By the
time she has applied it, the class has
moved on to standing up and sitting down from their chairs. “Hey,
Trouble!” Bryce points to Renee. “I
want to see you standing up too!” She
throws him a look, and then laughs.
Feeling good and looking good is
important to this group. They’re
here to encourage each other in the battle to stay limber. Increasing strength in
arms, knees and legs is the goal.
Bryce takes a minute to go mug
for the camera with Sylvia and then
quips, “Get back to work, Miss 101.”
“ The program is wellrun. The instructor is
trained to deal with
this age group and
work with different
levels of ability.”
The women are smiling and energetic
as Bryce hands them resistance tubes
to place beneath their feet and pull
with their arms.
“How many shall we do today,
Irene?” Bryce asks a rosy-cheeked trooper
wearing a bold, red-striped sweater.
“Five,” she replies.

“20? Okay, we’ll do 20,” Bryce
wisecracks and then adds, “Wait, I like
five better.”
Irene Levin and her comrade,
Doris Korsch move nimbly, stretching
the bands to work their biceps. Estelle
Gedan, in a green sweater and beige
scarf, is encouraged and supported
by her son, Joel and granddaughter
Alicia, who have joined her today.
They are here enjoying one of their
frequent visits with Estelle and pat
her back enthusiastically as she goes
through Bryce’s routine.
Working side-by-side with each
and every resident, Live 2 B Healthy®
Senior Fitness helps improve balance,
coordination, flexibility, muscularity
and stamina. And it’s never too late to
begin. Bryce tells of one woman who
started exercising when she was 102.
After the class, I chat with Carol
Lewin, a former anthropology professor at the University of Vermont
who did her field work in Pakistan.
She moved to Minnesota to be near
her daughter and has been living at
Roitenberg for approximately fourteen months. Twelve of those fourteen
have been spent exercising, and more
recently, attending the L2BH class.
“The program is well-run,” she
said. “The instructor is trained to deal
with this age group and work with different levels of ability. He’s a good fit
because he knows his audience.”
When asked how the program was
working for her, she said, “I can move
my legs a lot more easily. It’s a good fit
for my mobility.”
Looking good. Feeling good. That’s what
this exercise program is all about. Neglected
limbs and muscles regain strength, energy is
renewed, and self-esteem is boosted. It’s all part
"
of Sholom’s ongoing commitment to enhancing mind, body, and spirit in all we do.
Louise had increased
balance by 905% and

"KEEPING LOVE ALIVE"
An Interview
S PI R I T
with Marilyn and
Melvin Warren
By Sheryl Thornberg
& Jamie Maddeaux
Photos by David Sherman
and Tom Majewski
Marilyn & Mel Warren have
been married for 63 years.
Together with their dog,
Brandy, they now reside at
Bentson Assisted Living on
the Shaller Family Campus at
Sholom East.
In the spirit of Sholom, we
wanted to know more about
this couple who have been
married for so many years.
We sat down with them in
their apartment and asked
them to tell us their story.
10
O
ne day in 1949, a friend called
up young Marilyn Fox, needing to “fix up this fella for
Saturday night.” It was to be a blind
date and Marilyn was reluctant. After
her friend’s persistence, Marilyn
finally conceded, “Okay, if you can’t
find anybody by ten minutes to eight
Saturday night, I’ll help you out.” Her
friend couldn’t find anybody, so they
arrived at the well-known Criterion
restaurant in St. Paul, which featured a
beautiful lobster tank from which diners could select their own crustaceans.
As Marilyn waited nervously with
her friend, she inquired about when
this “fella” would be coming. “Well, if
you look at the door. He just walked
in. His name is Mel Warren,” she said.
Marilyn turned her head and her jaw
dropped.
“Oh, my G–d! Be still my heart!”
she exclaimed. She was smitten immediately. “He was handsome, well-groomed,
dressed beautifully, and here we are, sixty
some years later.”
As for Melvin, he was smitten too.
“Right away, I knew she was the one. I was
from St. Paul. She was from Minneapolis
and all the guys went to Minneapolis to
find their brides.”
They were married in a garden
wedding on August 16, 1949. He, the
handsome “older” man at 30, and she,
a beautiful young lady of 22.
Today, they sit on a cozy blue
sofa with a framed Howard Behrens
painting on the wall behind them.
Their “absolutely-no-more-dogs” dog,
Brandy, a poodle, nestles comfortably
on the end table beside the couch. Red
when she was a puppy, her fur has now
softened into a lovely apricot color.
Melvin, a WWII veteran was in the
grocery business when he met Marilyn.
His generous parents had helped him
get established and Marilyn, naturally
good with numbers, was brought in
to pay the bills and occasionally run
the cash register. Their store, Warren’s
Supermarket, was progressive and
known for having two checkout counters, virtually unheard of in those
times of traditional “mom and pop”
grocery stores.
“One day,” Marilyn remembers, “I
was working behind the meat counter serving a customer who wanted
Limburger cheese—sliced. So I “borrowed” the meat cutter and sliced the
cheese up nicely and sent the happy
customer on her way. A little while
later, Melvin comes behind the counter,
sniffing the air suspiciously and wants
to know, ‘who sliced cheese on the
meat slicer? ‘I did,’ I answered, ‘why?’
‘You don’t slice Limburger cheese
on the meat slicer!’ Mel exclaims.”
Mel sent her back to a sudsy wash
sink to clean the meat cutter. “I had to
take it apart (lots of little parts), wash it,
and put it all back together again. No
one ever got Limburger sliced again!”
They continued working together
as they raised their family and eventually bought a successful liquor store in
St. Paul. Marilyn again kept the books
and, according to Mel, kept tight purse
strings. “She was very efficient and she
could handle money well...too well!
She doesn’t give me any! She’d say,
‘What do you need it for?’”
“Oh, now, Melvin, that’s not my
statement!” Marilyn protests.
Melvin continues, “She’d tell me,
‘you have everything you need right
here.’ And I’d reply, ‘I’d feel better with
a few bucks in my pocket!’ She’d say, ‘If
you need it, you can ask me.’” Melvin
silently mouths the words, “I never did...”
Laughter erupts.
Marilyn nudges him and scolds,
11
“Melvin! That’s not nice!” He grins
broadly, obviously proud of her, and
teases, “That’s what I’m telling you!”
Marilyn said, “I had five dollars a week
to pay for the beauty shop and the newspaper. And he couldn’t believe I had money
left over! So that’s when he entrusted me
with the banking and the bills.”
“After the war,” Melvin recalls, “My
mother got us together in the checkout
of the grocery store and said, ‘The war’s
over, you’re home now. What do you
want to do?’”
“My mother said, ‘We will give you
half of what the store earns because we
don’t need it. We’re old.’
“Half was plenty. That was very
generous of them.” Then, pointing at
Marilyn, he mouths the words, “I gave
it to her. She still has it.”
They are obviously a good team. They
talk about their son, Richard, and daughter, Janie, and their grandchildren whom
they adore. “They’re wonderful,” says
Marilyn. “Spoil them when they’re little,
love them all the time.”
“Melvin taught the kids how to
work,” she continues. “That’s important.
We took them with us. Very early on,
12
“Through the years,
I’ve fallen in love with
him a couple times.”
—Marilyn Warren
we started them learning to sit nice, eat
right. Times were different then. There
was a Rainbow Cafe we used to go to for
dinner. And when Richard was through
eating, he had a lot of energy. So I’d tell
him he could go hang out in front of the
store. You can’t do that today. You’d have
no kid!”
When we ask them what advice they
would give to newly-married couples,
Marilyn says, “Be honest. If you’re honest
with somebody, you never have to back
away or correct anything. You can’t remember a lie, but you can remember the truth.”
What sort of things do they like to
do together?
“We like everything together,” says
Marilyn. “He taught me how to fish and
to hunt, he bought me a gun—a small shotgun—and we went hunting for pheasant.
We do everything together.”
“We had a house on the Missi
ssippi river. We enjoyed the
summers there. Many of our
friends came to visit there—the
Bentsons, the Perlmans, and
the Shallers.”
For at least fifty years,
Marilyn has volunteered at
Sholom making knishes. Mel
volunteers too. They helped
sell knishes at the State Fair.
“No one did it alone. We were
all together and we still are. There are
about 14 or 15 of us downstairs on
Wednesday mornings. It’s been a labor
of love for many years.”
What was the best invention?
“The computer,” says Marilyn.
And the worst invention? Twitter
and Facebook.
The secret of their long mar
riage?
Marilyn puts it this way: “Through the years,
I’ve fallen in love with him a couple times.
You don’t stay that ‘wonderful’ love feeling.
Life interferes with that. There are things
that come up and distractions. You have children and are concerned about them. You
have illnesses and things that take away some
of the pleasantness, but you find it again.”
“As the years go by, you’re more
mature. And you never really know the
person you’re married to. If they haven’t
surprised you, you haven’t been married
long enough.”
Brandy gets up and walks across their
laps. She cuddles down between them
on the couch and they both stroke her
fur affectionately. “I love her,” Mel says of
Brandy. It appears the feeling is mutual.
We look through their wedding
album that holds priceless black and
white photos of their big day. Their
beautifully illustrated ketubah, a decree
of marriage, sits on the coffee table.
And they gush over pictures of their
family whom they love unabashedly.
Our videographer, Tom Majewski, has
just become a new father himself and
says he’s struggling to get into a routine.
“Oh, there’s no routine after you
have kids—until they leave home!”
Marilyn laughs.

Sholom
We need our community behind us
now more than ever! Show your support for Sholom in several different
ways!
CARE.
COMPASSION.
COMMUNITY.
22
1. Become a member of Sholom and
receive dual membership with
Sholom Auxiliary. Choose from several membership levels, or become
a life member! Use the envelope
included in this report to show your
support!
2. Become a Bed & Breakfast Backer.
Join the Sholom devotees who
understand and support our mission to care for the elderly. Bed and
Breakfast Backers contribute in increments of $25 or more per month
to offset Sholom’s operating losses.
Backers are automatically members
of Sholom. To become a Bed &
Breakfast backer, call
(952) 934.1664.
3. Acknowledge a special occasion or
memorialize someone with a donation to Sholom.
To make a tribute or d
 onation on
our website at www.sholom.com.
Click on “Giving” and learn how!
For more information on all of these
options, call (952) 939.1664.
4. Volunteer your time and talents
at Sholom.
Give an hour or a day, once or on a
regular basis. To learn more about
the countless volunteer opportunities
available, call:
(952) 939.1627 (St. Louis Park) or
(651) 328.2068 (St. Paul).
Sholom
Auxiliary
Created to enrich, enhance and bring
comfort to Sholom residents and tenants through fundraising efforts.
The Auxiliary has provided many
“extras” for Sholom residents and
tenants through the years—including
purchasing special equipment and offsetting the “in-house” beauty/barber
shop fees.
Sales of Auxiliary-made “Delicious
Knishes,” the Food for Show; Food on the
Go cookbook and Special Service cards
all directly benefit Sholom, and on
Thursday, June 20, 2013, the Auxiliary
sponsored the third-annual Food for
Your Soul event which continues to be
a resounding success every year!
Auxiliary specific endowments are
another way to support the Auxiliary’s
efforts. Endowments support specific
programs like communication, others
are there for where the need is greatest. To find out how you can create
an Auxiliary endowment fund or to
become a member, call (952) 939.1594.
The dual membership program of
Sholom, together with the Auxiliary
has been tremendously successful. Be
sure to renew your membership for the
2013-14 year, or, if you aren’t already
a member, you can join anytime! Join
online at www.sholom.com or call
(952) 939.1638.
Sholom
Foundation
Ensuring Sholom programs, services
and facilities for our elderly loved
ones, ourselves, and generations to
come . . .
The sole mission of Sholom
Foundation is to raise sufficient
endowment and annual funds to generate annual financial support for
Sholom services and facilities, and to
promote excellence in care to those
served by Sholom.
Serving the fastest growing population—seniors over the age of 65—and
ever-decreasing government reimbursements for long-term care, makes the
need for a reliable source of funding for Sholom more important than
ever, and even more challenging given
today’s economy.
The Foundation’s fundraising
efforts are concentrated on planned
gifts—current and pledges of cash
or stock, and estate gifts that name
Sholom Foundation as a beneficiary
in a will, life insurance policy, qualified retirement fund or trust, or
property—all of which may establish
named funds to support Sholom in
perpetuity.
Gifts to the Sholom Foundation
provide the crucial financial support
necessary in serving the elderly community. To learn more about how you
can make a difference with your gift
to Sholom Foundation, call Executive
Director, Joel Mandel at
(952) 939.1593.
