The ESSINGTON SCHOOL DARWIN Creating the Difference A Member of the Council of International Schools A Cambridge International School CRICOS No.: 02041G The ESSINGTON SCHOOL DARWIN The Essington School Darwin has a comprehensive sporting program for its students. This provides opportunities for students to participate in many sports at school, interschool, community, and international level. The Essington School Darwin’s sporting program develops skills acquired in the curriculum subject of Physical Education. This is taught from Transition to Year 12 experienced Physical Education teachers. Our Junior School Physical Education program provides students with a quality weekly physical education and sports program, taught by specialist physical education teachers. Students in Transition to Year 3 complete a two week swimming program each year. Our Middle School Physical Education program allows students to develop their skills and follow their interests. Increasingly, they access specialist sporting facilities for fundamental skill training in various sports. In the Elective program, students can extend themselves and participate at a higher level in Physical Education and use a variety of community sports facilities. Our Senior College NT Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) allows students to do Physical Education as a study at Year 11 (Stage 1) or Year 12 (Stage 2) level. The Essington School Darwin’s overall sporting program develops skills acquired in Physical Education. Primary students participate in sports such as swimming, athletics, ball skills, tennis, cross country, and basketball. In the Middle School students play soccer, tennis, hockey, swimming, and football. We aim to provide as many opportunities as possible for students to participate in sport within the school, with other schools, and within the local and national community. We feel it is important for students to experience the benefits of being in a team, as well as being a solo competitor. Many of our students participate in community sporting clubs, and represent the school, school zone, Darwin and the Northern Territory in various sporting activities each year. The House Sport program allows students to participate in a wider variety of sports during a school year. It also provides opportunities for students to participate in sport leadership within the school. Students are members of one of three School Houses who compete against each other. 3 As each student joins The Essington School Darwin, they are allocated to one of the School’s three Houses: FLYNN HOUSE (Geckos/Red) Flynn House is named after the well-known Territorian, John Flynn, who established the Australian Inland Mission and fifteen hospitals throughout the outback. GUNN HOUSE (Frillnecks/Yellow) Gunn House is named after Jeanie Gunn, a well-known early Australian author who wrote “We Of The Never Never”. WICKHAM HOUSE (Skinks/Blue) Wichham House is named after one of the first European exploring sailors in the Darwin region, John Wickham, who was the First Lieutenant on the Beagle (18311836) when it made its famous voyage with Charles Darwin. The school Physical Education and sport uniform has a splash of colour in it representing the House that a student belongs to. The House system provides opportunities for students to develop their leadership capabilities, to interact with students outside their year and class level, and to participate in a variety of sport and other activities during the school year. Each House elects House Captains and House Vice Captains, and some have Sports Captains for major sports. The three major House sporting carnivals each year are House Cross Country in Semester One, House Athletics in Semester One, and House Swimming in Semester Two. House sporting competitions provide students with the opportunity to try different sports that they may not normally be able to access. The House sporting competitions also 4 provide opportunities for student leadership and affirmation. The Essington School Darwin has a strong commitment to interschool sport, and participates in almost all interschool sport competitions offered by NT Schools Sport. NT School Sport organizes interschool competitions during the school year in various sports: Tennis, soccer, basketball, netball, rugby, cross country, swimming, athletics, AFL, touch football, T20 Cricket, table tennis, orienteering, gymnastics, TBall, beach volleyball, and squash. The Essington School Darwin participates in almost every sporting competition available, and is successful in many sports. Students who participate in NT School Sport competitions are eligible to represent their School Zone in their particular sport. This may lead to selection for the Northern Territory team in a sport, and the chance to represent the Northern Territory at a national level. The Essington School Darwin affirms the efforts, sportsmanship, and success of students through Award Certificates at our weekly Assembly, end of Semester Award Ceremonies, through the School’s weekly Newsletter, and through noticeboards.
