President’s Letter
Dear Members,
I am happy to report that the Norfolk Sports Club Scholarship
Foundation will be able to providing 16 – $2000 scholarships this
year! This is made possible through the continuous efforts of
NSC members who work year-round to raise funds to recognize
deserving scholar-athletes. Fellow members of the Norfolk
Sports Club, I salute you in a mission well done!
If you truly want to feel the effects of all our hard efforts, I
would strongly encourage you to attend the Scholarship Dinner
on June 5th as we celebrate the young men and women who we
have found to be worthy of our support!
We are fortunate to have Mike London, Head Football Coach
at the University of Virginia, as our keynote speaker. Please do
not underestimate the value of this function. It will be time
exceptionally well spent!
Speaking of well done, Bill Rainey has lined up a good golf
season. For our golfers, let’s hope the sun will continue to shine
on the Norfolk Sports Club.
Please attended our luncheons. The 50/50 jackpot is over $800.
WOW, that alone is a great reason to be there!
Lastly, as you may be well aware, our membership has been
down for the last few years and this is somewhat limiting our
cash flow. I would ask all members to simply think of one person
who you think may benefit from becoming a member and take
the step to invite them to one of our luncheons.
Sincerely,
Wylie

Lifetime Achievement Award
Johnny Brown
When Don Griffin, a founding member of the Norfolk Sports
Club, spoke at Johnny’s induction into the Granby High School
Hall of Fame,he said of Brown, “He wasn’t the best there ever
was, but he’s the best I ever saw. “There are bigger, stronger and
faster men. Some could jump higher, throw a football farther or
hit a baseball harder. But who, this side of Ace Parker, could play
so many sports so well?” Nobody —not even Johnny himself —
remembers when they first started calling him “Norfolk’s Jim
Thorpe.”
During the depression, his family moved from Norfolk to
Smithfield and Johnny fell in love with sports. Not just any sport,
but all sports. Still in elementary school, Johnny was fashioning
his own bamboo vaulting poles and clearing over seven feet. Soon
the family returned to Norfolk where Johnny starred in the annual
Ruffner and Blair track meet taking three first place awards. He
still has his Ruffner letter and a stack of letters and first place
medals from Maury High School and the Norfolk Division of the
College of William and Mary, now Old Dominion University.
At the Norfolk Division, he starred in baseball, football and
track. He was a six event performer —100 yard dash, long jump,
high jump, high hurdles, low hurdles and pole vault. Against
Hampden-Sydney, he scored six first place finishes in a single
track meet. In 1940, he took the long jump title at the Virginia
AAU Meet; in 1941, he set the state long jump record at almost
23 feet at the AAU Meet. In 1946, with a borrowed pole and a
single jump at the Virginia AAU Track Meet, he took the gold
medal in the pole vault. The following year, representing the
Norfolk Sports Club (NSC), he repeated as champion.
After college, he played baseball in the City League and won
five batting titles. In the Dixie Pro Football League, he carried
the mail for the Norfolk Shamrocks. After finally hanging up his
cleats, he taught school and coached at Granby High School where
he later was named principal. In June of 2012, the sports club
fittingly renamed its outstanding trackman’s award in honor of
Johnny Brown. From 1950 to 1962, his “boys” earned the Outstanding Trackman Award 11 times. “Johnny’s done so much for
so many for so long as coach and an educator,” said long-time
sports club member Gene Byerly. “It ’s gratifying to see him recognized like this.”
In 1988, Johnny was named coach of the All-Navy Track and
Field Team which included men and women athletes from naval
bases around the world, plus the entire Naval Academy track team.
At the Armed Forces Track and Field Championships, the team
broke three Inter-Services Track and Field records.“He’s the most
incredible guy I ’ve ever known. He was an inspiration to us as
teenagers,”said Bob Layton, a member of Granby’s 1956 recordsetting mile relay team.“And now, that we’re old men and need
inspiration even more, he’s still an inspiration.”
