Consumer/Business Math
Available for the following credits: Consumer Math 1 and 2; or Consumer Math 1 and Business Math 1
Consumer Math 1 consists of Units 2, 3, and 4
Students will discuss the possibility of
Consumer Math 2/Business Math 1 consists of Units 5 and 6.
earning their second credit as either
Unit 1 reteaches Basic Skills; they are referenced throughout the text book.
Consumer Math 2 or Business Math 1
with the teacher before starting that
credit.
Enrollment conditions: Students may not enroll in Consumer/Business Math unless they are Juniors or Seniors with
at least 25 credits & have at least 3 math credits.
For Each Chapter:
 Take the “Practice Test” at the end of the chapter. There are then two (2) options:
Option 1:
o Step 1: Earn an “A” with a score of >90% on the first try, with a one-class period time limit, and get
full credit for that chapter’s Book & Workbook Lesson Exercises with a score of “A” recorded.
o Step 2: Fail to earn a score of >90% but use the results of the “Practice Test” to review the lessons
in the chapter & to practice some exercises in order to better be able to do the “Spreadsheet
Application,” then retake the “Practice Test” and earn an “A” with a score of >90% to get full credit
for that chapter’s work and move on to the next chapter with a score of “A” recorded.
o Step 3: Fail to earn a score of >90% Review the chapter more deeply and carefully, doing more
exercises in each lesson and more effectively using the online resources, then retake the “Practice
Test” and earn a score of 80% to get full credit for that chapter’s work and move on to the next
chapter with a score of “B” recorded.
Option 2:
o If you are not be able to earn >90% on the “Practice Test” and, upon reviewing the material, are
positive that a great deal more work will be required to get the necessary score of 80% on the
Chapter Test, then you may proceed immediately with Step 3.

Do the “Spreadsheet Application” using the Student Activity Workbook and accompanying CD in order to
complete the chapter.
For Each Unit:




Do the Unit Thematic Project, found at the end of each Unit, for 10% of the Unit Grade.
All Projects will include a Spreadsheet, & will incorporate the computer, internet, and some method of
e-presentation.
All projects will include citations (bibliographies).
All projects will include a log of steps taken for each stage of the work.
o Options for satisfying the requirements include Paper, PowerPoint or online presentations, web
pages, vodcasts, blogs, vlogs, or other such uses of technology as the student proposes to the
teacher.
o Students may collaborate with other students as long as a log is kept of the work done by each
student in the work collaborated on together.
Basic Skills Workshops
Unit 1 is actually a collection of Basic Skills “Workshops,” lessons that are referenced
throughout the book which reteach skills that should be mastered in order to complete the work required for these
Math courses. Students are expected to use them as suggested by the textbook on an as-needed basis. If the student
needs more help than the “workshop” provides, then the student should contact the teacher to get that extra help
which may require enrolling in Math Tutoring class.
